. INVENTOR k/c z 800% ATTO RN EY5 Patented Nov. 21, 1933 pa rs QTATES 1,935,227 WIRE CONTAINER Jay VJ. Cook, Detroit, Mich, assignor to The C and W Wire Container Company, Detroit, Mich, a corporation of Michigan 7 Application January s, 1932. Serial "Nb. 585,540 2 Claims. (01, 206 -59) The present invention pertains to a novel combination of wire container and dispenser, and more-particularly to a container of the carton type. The principal object of the present inven- 5 tion is to provide a container of a construction whereby the wire or other cablemay'be drawn therefrom with a continuous or other longitudinal movement in an efficient manner without attention on the part of the workmen in installing or putting the wire into use, and further to incorporate in such container, guidingmeans so arranged as not to interfere with or necessitate achange in the usual methods of or regulations pertaining to the manufacture of cartons or containers for the purpose, or in the use of such containers as cartons for holding and enclosing, coils. of wire while being transported or handled.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a carton or container with wire guiding means through. which the wire may be drawn centrally of the carton and whereby the wire is guided and directedregardless of the direction in which the wire is pulled from said guiding means, thereby preventing kinking or binding of the wire as it leaves the coil withinthe container.
With the above and other ends in view, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a box, carton or container with a coil of wire or cable therein and illustrative of the manner in which the wire is guided as it is drawn therefrom;
Fig. 2 is a'transverse, central section through the container, drawn to a reduced scale and showing guides brought together;
Fig. 3 is a similar section through the container showing guides separated;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank from which the box or carton is formed;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank forming an interior top wall of the box, and
Fig. 6 is a blank for forming an interior, central tube or cylinder.
Reference to the several parts of the device embodying the invention will now be made by the use of like reference characters designating corresponding parts throughout the several views.
While the device as illustrated is shown as provided with guiding members integral with the box or carton, it will be understoodthat these members may be formed separately therefrom and subsequently attached thereto, or their use dispensed with, without departing from the invention, the construction shown, being merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention. I
The blankfrom which the box or carton is made and as shown in Fig. 4, comprises a rectangular bottom section 1, a pair of side walls forming flaps 2 extending from opposite edgesof the bottom section, a pair of end walls forming flaps 3 extending from the .other edges of said bottom, and reinforcing flaps 4 extending from the ends of the flaps 3, these parts when properly foldedand secured in any suitable manner, formingthe bottom, side and end walls of a rectangular box, the flaps being separated from the ends of the flaps 2, by slits 6 to permit of such folding; The blank may also be formed, as shown, with triangular flaps 5 extending from the outer edges of the side'iiaps 2 to fold over the top of the box, and for thepurpose hereinafter set forth.
The blank '7 shown in Fig. 6, is of rectangular form with a plurality of tabs 8 extending from one of its longitudinal edges, and in making up the carton, this blank is rolled into the form of an open ended tube or cylinder, with said tabs 8 extended outwardly from its lower end and glued or otherwise secured to the bottom 1, centrally thereof, to form a central tubular spindle or shaft within the box, to engage within the axial opening of a coil of wire 15 to be placed in the box and held centrally in the box, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The top of this box is formed by the rectangular blank 9, shown in Fig. 5, this blank having a circular opening 10, the end portions 11 being folded downwardly to lie against the end walls of the box with the portion 9 0 extending across and closing the upper end of the box with the opening 10 therein concentric with the upper end of the center tube or cylinder 7 and spaced therefrom, the diameter of said opening being greater than the diameter of the tube'to provide a space all around the'upper end of the tube between it and the edge of the opening, said tube being of a length to extend up the full depth of the box with its upper end in the plane of the lower side of the cover wall 9. When the coil 15 is in place within the box and sleeved over the tube '7, the free end of the coil may be extended through the annular space between the upper end of the tube and the edge of the opening in the top wall of the box, so that when this end of the wire is pulled outwardly, the wire of the coil which is put under tension by such pull and is shortened in its diameter thereby, will contact or close about the tube '7, which will stop such shortening or kinking, and the turn will form a long spiral, free from the other turns of the coil, and will pass freely out through this annular opening without kinking or binding, said opening acting as a guide for the wire as it passes therethrough, the wall 9 preventing the coil from becoming disengaged from-the centralpost or tube 7 upon which the coil is sleeved.
To form a further guide for the wire as it is drawn out, so that no matter in which direction the wire is led laterally from the box, the wire will not become kinked or bound and will pull out freely, the two flaps 5 which are adapted to be folded toward each other over the vtopof the box, are provided with openings' 'or eyes 13 reinforced with eyelets 14 adjacent their inner angles, and through which eyelets the wire is passed after passing through the annular opening around the tube 7. The flaps are of such'a length that they may overlap at their ends and therefore these ends are raised above the top wall of the box when the wire'is being drawn through their eyelets and these eyelets will be located in alignment with the axis of the tube 7. The
wire'is therefore" guided axially of the coil as. it is. pulled therefrom and prevented from: binding,
no matter inwhich direction it is led laterally after .passing throughthe eyelets.
These flaps'5 are preferably so connected to the .box along the opposite side edges thereof, that they may be foldedrflat'down upon the top 9 0f the box, their inner ends or angles being overlappedwhen so folded, or these end portions may be bent .downwardly and insertedin the upper end of the tube 7. These flaps 5 therefore, in no way interfere with the use of the box,as an ordinary carton: in which such wire coils are usually shipped, and the .form' of the present box is such that it maybe formed-up from a-blank, with or .withoutrsaid. flaps 5.
The present device therefore serves all the purposes of the ordinary box for holding a wire coil during transportation, and in addition serves as a holding and guiding means so that the wire may be pulled directly from the coil while contained in the box, thus doing away with the necessity-for placing the coil upon areel; origuiding:or unwinding the wire by hand.-
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that various changes in the construction maybe made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and such changes are contemplated.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a holding and dispensing container for a coil of ccmprising a rectangular box having bottom, side and top Walls, said top wall being formed with a central opening, atubular member secured ataits lower end to the bottom wall of said box centrally thereof withit's upper' end adjacent said openingxand spaced from the. edge thereof to form an annular. outlet opening 108 for an end of the wire of said "coil, and a nap on said box having an opening sin. axial. alignment with" said tubular member ancLthrough V which opening the end of said. wire'.is.led.-and:f guided.
2.
