TRAVELING CASE Filed Au 12, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 March fi, 193,4. F. N. LEWIS 1,950,252
' TRAVELING CASE Filed Aug. 12. 1,932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Mar. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to improvements in baggage and more especially to a novel fitted case.
One of the objects is to provide a traveling case including hingedly connected sections, the upper.
or lower one of which may be opened without opening the other one.
A further object is to provide a fitted case, the lower section of which has a compartment for perfume containers or the like, and the intermediate section of which is cut away to provide head room for said containers.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved case with the lid or upper section open.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with both the lid and intermediate section open.
' Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the case with the upper and intermediate sections closed relatively to one another, but opened relatively to the lower section.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the closed case.
In the drawings, 5 designates the lower sec- 30 tion of the case which is preferably in the form of a tray and has rigid walls and a rigid bottom.
This section is provided at its rear wall with a substantially U-shaped wall 6 forming a compartment '7 to receive containers 8 which are taller than the wall 6.
Hinges 9 connect the upper edge of the rear wall of the section 5 tothe rear wall of an intermediate section 10, preferably provided on its bottom with a facing of quilted silk or satin, as shown at 11, to give the same an attractive appearance.
As best shown in Fig. 1, the intermediate section is divided by walls 12 to form chambers 13 to receive various articles, and the largest one of these chambers is preferably provided with fastening straps 14 or the like for securing toilet articles in place.
Immediately above the compartment 17 of the lower section, the intermediate section is out away to provide a window 15 to receive the upper ends of the containers 8 when the sections 5 and 10 are in the position shown in Fig. 1. Suitable fastening elements 16 may be employed to secure the sections in this position. L";- A lid ,or upper section 17 is hinged to the upper edge of the rear wall of the intermediate section, as shown at 18, and this lid is preferably provided on its inner side with a mirror 19 which may be used in connection with the toilet articles carried by the intermediate section.
Fastening devices 20 are employed for locking the lid to the section 10, as shown in Fig. 4.
From the foregoing it will be understood that I have provided a fitted case, the lower section of which may be employed as a storage space for wearing apparel, and the intermediate section of which may be used for toilet purposes without opening the apparel compartment.
While I have disclosed what I consider to be a preferred form of the invention in such manner Z that the same may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, I am aware that changes may be made in the details disclosed, ,without departing from the spirit of the invention, as expressed in the claims.
What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:-
.1. A traveling case comprising a lower tray having an internal wall forming an internal compartment, an intermediate tray hingedly connected to the lower tray, and a lid hingedly connected to the intermediate tray, said intermediate tray having an opening therein forming a continuation of said internal compartment, whereby containers projecting from the internal .85 compartment may be removed through said opening when the intermediate tray is closed and the lid is raised.
2. A traveling case comprising a lower tray having an internal wall forming an internal compartment, an intermediate tray hingedly connected to the lower tray, a lid hingedly connected to the intermediate tray, the hinged connections being arranged on the rear walls of the trays and the lid, and fastening devices detachably connecting the front walls of the trays and lid, said intermediate tray having an opening positioned directly above said internal compartment, whereby containers projecting from said compartment may be removed through said opening when the 1.00 intermediate tray is closed and the lid is raised.
3. A traveling case comprising a lower tray provided with an internal wall which forms with the rear wall of the tray an internal compartment at the rear of the tray adapted to receive receptacles of greater height than said walls, an intermediate tray hinged to said rear wall, and a lid hingedly connected to the rear wall of the intermediate tray, said intermediate tray having a. window frame arranged directly above said internal wall and said rear wall to form a continuation of said compartment to confine the upper portions of the receptacles and to prevent shifting of the same, whereby a window is formed through which said receptacles may be withdrawn from said internal compartment when the intermediate tray is closed and the lid is raised.
'4. A traveling case comprising a lower tray I provided with an internal wall which forms with the rear wall of the tray an internal compartment at the rear of the trayadapted to receive receptacles of greater height than said walls, an
intermediate tray hinged to said rear wall and FLORENCE N. LEWIS.
