is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending grooves p and q adapted to register withV the passages ii and y' respectively. The grooves p and q are joined at one end by an annular groove 1' in the periphery of the throttle valve c and the said groove 1 may be in constant communication with an exhaust port s in the valve chest Z.
Preferably the pressure fluid employed for actuating the motor B also passes through the throttle valve c, thus necessitating only a single connection between the source'of pressure fluid supply and the drilling mechanism. The throttle valve e is accordingly provided with a port t through which pressure fluid flows in the open position of the throttle valve c to a passage u leading to a chamber c also in the back head W and having a seating surface w at one end for the accommodation of a poppet valve a: which is normally maintained upon the seating surface w by a spring y in the chamber U. From the chamber o leads a passage z to which is connected one end of a hose 2 and of which the other end is connected to the motor B.
. In order to guide, rotate and adjust the drilling mechanism with respect to the work the back head W is provided with a pair of grip members S which are secured to the back head by a rod or bolt 4;. The bolt l extends through the Vgrip members 3 and the back head W and has a nut 5 threaded thereon for clamping the grip members 3 securely to the back head. Mounted pivotallyY upon one of the grip members 3 is-a lever 6 which acts against a stem 7 of the valve a: for opening said valve.Y
To the end'that the motor B may be'supported by the piston rod Ov a cradle 8 is threaded tothe outer projecting end of the piston rod and clamped securely thereto by `a pinch bolt 9. On the portion of the cradle 8 adjacent the end of the rod O is a slot l() to accommodate a rear extremity of the motor B, as for instance a handle 11.
An arm portion 12 of the cradle may be shaped y to conform substantially to the shape of the motor B and extends forwardly along the motor and termina-tes in a half-bearing 13 which may be an integral portion of the cradle. In order to clamp the front extremity of the motor B securely to the cradle 8 a bearing cap 14 is connected with one end to the bearing 13, as by means of a pivot 15 and to theopposite end of the bearing 13Vis pivoted an eye-bolt 16 adapted to lie in a slot 17 in the bearing 4cap le and having a nut 18 for clamping the halfbearing 13 and the bearing cap 14 securely to the motor B. Means are provided for preventing deflection of the piston rod O, particularly in the extended position of said piston rod. The means employed for this purpose comprises a support rod 19 which is affixed with its front end to a lug 20 on the portion of the cradle 8 adjacent the end ofthe piston rod O. The rod 19 extends slidably through` an aperture l2l. in the'boss Y and is threadedly connected with its rear end to a sleeve 22 slidable on the feeding cylinder G. The sleeve 22 is, in the present instance, provided with apertures 23 to receive the `bolts X so that the sleeve 22 and the feeding cylinder G will be interlocked against relative rotary movement.
The mounting D whereby the drilling mechanism A is supported comprises a bearingV member 24 wherein the feeding cylinder G is freely rotatable. Oneend of the bearing vmember 24 seats, in the present instance', against the boss Y and the other end of the bearing member against a collar 25 that encrcles the feeding cylinder G and to which the collar is clamped by means of a bolt 26. Preferably the bolt 26 is engaged by a notch 27 in the surface of the feeding cylinder to prevent longitudinal movement of the collar 25 thereon.
In order that the drilling mechanism may be conveniently oscillated in a horizontal plane the bearing member 24 is provided with a shaft or spindle 28 journalled in a bearing 29 which itself may be rotatably mounted upon a horizontal bar 30. The bar 30 may be conveniently supported by crossheads 31 having adjustable legs 32 whereby the height of the mounting and the drilling mechani-sm rmaybe varied.
The operation Aof the device is as follows: Let it be assumed that the piston J and therefore the motor B lie in their rearmost limiting positions and that it be desired to actuate the working implement E into the work. If then the throttle valve c is rotated to place the port g in registry with the passage h pressure fluid will'be 4admitted .into the rear end of the piston chamber H to act against the pressure area K for-moving the motor B towards the rock F. In'thisposition ofv the throttle valve c pressure liuid'is also admittedinto the chamber 'U so that by opening the valve a: pressure fluid will flow through the hose 2 to the motor B where it may be distributed to the percussive element by a suitable distributing valve (not shown).

Upon completion of the drill hole F, or after the working implementE has penetratedthe work to the limit of its extent, the throttle valve c is rocked to its other limiting position for retracting the motor from the work; In this position ofthe throttle valve the port registers with the passage y andthe groove p withl the passage h. The pressure iluid previously employed for actuating the motor' towardsY the work will then be exhausted from the vrear end ofthe piston lchamber and and fro and the entire drilling mechanism A will follow the movement of the vgrip members.
I claim: I
rl. In a rock drilling mechanism, a fluid actuated motor adapted to actuate a working implement, a feedingcylinder, a fluid actuated piston in the feeding cylinder, a piston rod on the piston, means extending forwardly ofthe rod for connecting the rod to the motor, a support rod arranged exteriorly of the feeding cylinder and being connected to the piston rod and thesaid means for preventing deection of the piston rod, and means for preventing relative rotation between the feeding cylinder and the piston.
2. In a rock drilling mechanism, a fluid actuated motor adapted to actuate a-working implement, a feeding cylinder, a fluid actuated piston in the feeding cylinder,V a piston rod onv the piston, a
'cradle on Vthe piston rod v` extending forwardly thereof to receive and support the motor, a support rod exteriorly of the feeding cylinder connected at one end to the cradle and having `its other end connected slidably to the feeding cylinder, and means on the feeding cylinder engaging the support rod to prevent relative rotation between the feeding cylinder and the piston.
3. In a rock drilling mechanism, a fluid actuated motor adapted to actuate a working implement, a feeding cylinder, a uid actuated piston in the feeding cylinder, a piston rod on the piston, a cradle on the piston rod extending forwardly of the rod to receive and support the motor, a support rod exteriorly ofthe feeding cylinderv and being connected with one end to the cradle for preventing deflection of the piston rod, a sleeve afxed to the other end of the support rod and being slidable on the feeding cylinder, and a boss on the feeding cylinder, engaging the support rod to prevent rotation of the feeding cylinder with respect to the piston.
4. In a rock drilling mechanism, a fluid actuated motor adapted to actuate a working implement, a bearing member, a feeding cylinder rotatable within the bearing member and having a boss, a head for the feeding cylinder, bolts in the boss and the head for securing the head to the feeding cylinder, a piston in the feeding cylinder and having a piston rod, a cradle carried by the piston rod to receive and support the motor,
a support rod extending slidably through the boss and being connected with one end to the cradle,
a sleeve on the other end of the rod and being in the boss for securing the back head to the' feeding cylinder, a piston in the feeding cylinder having a rod, a cradle on the rod to receive and support the motor, a support rod slidable through the boss and being connected with one end to the cradle, a sleeve on the other end of the support rod and being slidable on the bolts and the feeding cylinder, means in the back head for selectively controlling the admission and exhaust of pressure fluid to and from the ends of the feeding cylinder,
and a handle in the back head for rotating the entire drilling mechanism with respect to the bearing member.
