The present invention relates to store front constructions and more in particular to a sash structure provided with novel means for adjusting the inner and outer sash members into glass abutting and retaining position.
Among the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel means for adjusting and retaining a pane of glass intermediate yieldable sash members.
In an eficient sash construction it is essential that the glass be held with an amount of pressure sufiicient to retain it firmly in place, yet not enough to place the pane under strain. Due to the vibration and pressures from external sources to which the glass is subjected, the sash construction must therefore be sufficiently yieldable to eliminate the danger of splitting or cracking. It is therefore a further object of this invention to provide a novel construction of adjusting means in the form of a screw operable from the interior of the. glass for adjusting the sash members into or out of glass retaining position with the proper and requisite amount of pressure.
A still further object of the invention is t provide a novel construction of adjusting screw provided with an enlarged end adapted to contactingly engage an upstanding surface or rib on one of the sash members and retract said member into engagement with the pane of glass. In the preferred embodiment the enlarged end of the adjusting screw functions as a cam member, and because of its size, its maximum diameter being greater than that of the body of the screw, it is prevented from becoming disengaged from its mounting, thereby eliminating all danger of the same becoming lost or of its being removed. v
The invention further resides in the combination, construction, arrangements of parts and details illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and 5 change, and comprehends other details and constructions without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Further objects are to'provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efilciency, economy and 0 ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and as are inherently possessed thereby.

Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawing, the embodiment selected to illustrate the present invention is shown in a store front or window construction 1 adapted to form a setting for a pane of glass 2. The sash members are disclosed as mounted upon a sill 3 hav-- ing a sheathing 4 attached thereto, and a riser 5 forming a backing and retaining means for the inner sash member or pane seating section.
The disclosed embodiment of such construction comprises an outer sash member or moulding 6 and an inner sash member or pane seating section 7, these members acting in conjunction to receive and retain a pane of glass therebetween with an amount of pressure sufiicient to hold the glass firmly yet yieldably in position. The outer sash member 6 is provided adjacent its lower end with a downwardly inclined portion 6 and a base 8 adapted to seat against the sheaving 4 on the sill. At its upper end this outer moulding or sash member is provided with a glass abutting or contacting portion 9 adapted to bear against the pane of glass. Intermediate of this glass abutting portion 9 and the face of the moulding is provided a longitudinally extending channel or groove 10 adapted to receive the upper end 11 of a bracket or clamping member 12. In its preferred form this bracket is formed of a stamping consisting of spaced downwardly extending portions or legs 13 having upturned or outwardly bent portions 14 seating within a channel formed on the inclined portion 6 and between the base 8 and facing of the outer sash member or moulding.
These legs are further provided with openings 15 adapted to receive inturned lips 16 formed from the base 8 of the outer moulding. By reason of these lips 16 seating within the openings 15, the bracket 12 is prevented from moving longitudinally in the moulding. The portion intermediate the legs 13 is bent outwardly to provide a ledge 17 having its edge doubled channel 23 therebelow. The base 24 of this inouter end is provided with downwardly extendner sash member or glass retaining section seats upon the sheaving 4. Mounted within the sash member 7 is a bracket 25 preferably formed of a stamping having an upper rib 26 adapted to seat within the groove 23. Below this rib or bead is formed an overhanging shelf or flange 27 provided with a threaded opening 28 adapted to receive a screw or adjusting member 29. The base 30 of this bracket is inclined and at its ing portions or legs 31 adapted to seat intermediate embossings or lugs 31, these legs providing an opening 32 therebetween. Intermediate the flange 27 and the base 30 in the rear wall of the bracket 25, are provided punched or stamped out lips or projections 33 forguiding and retaining the flange or rib 18 in its movement, and openings for receiving screws or other suitable attaching means 34 for anchoring the bracket 25 and inner sash member 7 to the riser 5 formed on the sill 3.
The screw or threaded member 29 has its upper end slotted to receive a'screw driver or other instrument, while its lower end is provided with an enlarged, tapered portion 35 adapted to form a cam surface. As shown in Fig. 2, this enlarged end 35 is adapted to abut against the inner surface of the rib or bead 18 on the outer bracket member when the inner and outer bracket members are in assembled relation.
By tightening the screw the tapered surface of the end 35 rides over the bead or rib 18 and forces this rib or bead rearwardly or inwardly whereby to retract or draw the outer moulding into glass contacting engagement. Upon an unscrewing of the member 29 the outer sash member or moulding is released, and the outer moulding may be readily withdrawn. In order to secure access to the screw 29, the gutter is provided with an opening having an upstanding annular flange 36, the opening being of substantially the same diameter as the shank of the screw for permitting the insertion of a screw driver or other tool. The annular flange prevents the seepage of water or condensate from the gutter into the interior of the sash.
Any suitable number or spacing of the bracket members may be provided, depending upon the length of the sash members. 'The adjustment of the sash members may be readily accomplished from the interior of the glass, and by reason of the diameter of the end 35 of the screw member 29, this member may not be disengaged or removed when the brackets are in position, thereby eliminating all danger of the same becoming lost. Also because of the depth of the tapered end, a considerable range of adjustment is provided. Aligned openings 19 and 32 in the outer and inner bracket members, respectively, are adapted to receive the end 35 of the screw.
From the above description and the disclosure in the drawing, it will be readily understood that the invention comprises a new and novel store front construction and in the means for readily and efllciently adjusting the inner and outer sash members whereby they engage the glass with an amount of pressure suflicient to retain the same in firm yet yieldable relation.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
1. In a store front construction, the combination of an inner and an outer glass retaining 80 member, an adjusting screw on one of said members, and a rearwardly extending ledge on the other of said members and provided with an upstanding flange against which an end of saidscrew engages, said end of the screw when screwed downwardly against a side of said flange draws the ledge and its retaining member inwardly into glass reta nfi Position.
2. In a store front construction, an inner and an outer sash member adapted to clamp a pane of glass therebetween, and a cooperating clamping member mounted on each of said sash members, the clamping member on said inner sash member being provided with a screw having an enlarged tapered end forming a cam surface, and the clamping member on said outer sash member being provided with an upstanding flange against which said cam surface engages whereby upon a rotation of said screw in one direction said sash members abut and retain the glass v therebetween, and upon movement of said screw in the opposite direction said sash members are released.
3. In a store front construction, an inner and an outer sash member adapted to clamp a pane of glass therebetween, and cooperating brackets carried by said sash members and located at spaced intervals throughout the length of said sash members and attached thereto whereby to prevent longitudinal displacement thereof, one of said brackets being provided with a screw having a large tapered end of a maximum diameter greater than the threaded opening in which it is mounted, and the other of said brackets being provided with a rib with which the tapered end engages, said end being adapted to contact against and retract said rib and its sash member when said screw is screwed down whereby to engage and retain the glass in adjusted position, and to release said rib and its sash member when said screw is retracted.
4. In a store front construction, the combination of an inner sash member provided with a gutter and a glass seating portion an outer sash member provided with a glass seating portion, a bracket in said inner sash member having an inclined ledge seating against the base of said sash member, and an overhanging portion; a screw threadedly engaged in said overhanging portion and adjustable through an opening in said gutter, a cam surface on the end of said screw, a cooperating bracket in said outer member and provided with a ledge seating against the ledge on said first mentioned bracket, and a rib; the end of said screw being adapted to engage said rib whereby upon a tightening of said screw the cam surface thereof will bear against the rib and retract said outer sash member, and upon a loosening of the screw the outer sash member is reelased.
5. In a store front construction, the combination of an inner and an outer glass retaining member, an adjusting screw on one of said members provided with an enlarged tapered end, an
upstanding rib on said other member adapted to be engaged by said end whereby to retract said last named member into clamping engagement with the pane of glass, and a projection on said first mentioned member for guiding said rib in its movement. 50
