for use in lasting shoes, and more particularly to means and methods having in viewthe holding of. the upper; in lasted position until conditions aresuch that it need no longer be held extraneously by reason, for example, of the: setting of cement used to secure it' in lasted position. The invention is, herein illustrated in its application to the lasting of the toe ends of shoes; but it is to be understood that it is likewise applicable to the lasting of other portions, for example, the heel ends. 1 a

In one aspect, the invention provides novel wipers; inwardly over the bottom of a shoe and .then to be fastened. to thes'hoe to hold the upper in lasted position. In each of two alternative forms of construction herein disclosed this means comprises an upper-holding device having mem bers formed for attachment to the. wipers. prior to the lasting operation for wiping'the upper in-- I wa-rdly over the shoebottom by the movement of the wipers, the -members being attachable to the a shoe while the wipers are'over the shoe bottom. -As, illustrated, these members aremountedlin recesses provided inthe wiping faces of the wipers; and in-,one formdisclosed they extend overthe- .wiping' edges of the wipers' andl are pressed against these edges by a spring that connects. them together, while in the/other. form they; are

For applying to the shoe the form of upperholding device shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the wipers II) are provided in their wiping faces, i. e., in the faces thereof'that are opposite the bottom face of the last when the wipers are over the shoe bottom, with recesses 26 of less depth' than the thickness of the wipers to receive plane .portions 28 of upper-holding members or plates 30 which may be formed of sheet metal or other suitable material and are applied to the wipers in fixed relation thereto prior to the lasting of the toe, the recesses 25 being of such depth that .the lower faces of the portions 28 are in the same plane as the portions of the wiping faces of the wipers beyond the recesses. The members 30 have also portions 3| curved to extend transversely of the plane of the wipers and outwardly in such manner as to embrace the forward edges of the wipers, which are commonly and herein termed the wiping edges, although in the construction shown the portions of these 'edges along which the members 30 extend are not in actual contact with the upper; and the members are also curved lengthwise ,of the wiping edges to conform substantially to the contour of these edges and to the edge contour of the'end of the shoe bottom. It will accordingly be evident that the wipers serve to support the members 30 when the latter are applied thereto; and

to assist in maintaining the members in proper relation to the wipers and toeach other there is provided a loop spring 32 which connects the members together at their forward ends and tends to spread them apart so as to hold them in place on. the wipers, the ends of the spring 32 being inserted in openings provided in upstanding lugs 34 on the members. It will be understood that as the wipers are closed inwardly over the shoe bottom the members 30 are swung inwardly towardeach other against the resistance of the spring 32. Further to assist in supporting and holding the members in place on the wipers, they are provided with spring clips 36 which extend over the top faces of the wipers and snap into recesses 38 '(Fig. 4) in these faces.

From the foregoing description it will be evi; dent that as the wipers are advanced and closed to wipe the marginal portion of the upper inwardly over the insole the portions 28 of the members 30 are in wiping contact with the upper between the wipers and the bottom of the last. At the. end of the wiping operation the members 30 are fastened to the shoe to hold the upper in lasted position. While they may be fastened in various ways, there is herein illustrated the use of tacks t for this purpose,the tacks being driven into the shoe bottom in directions substantially perpendicular to the shoe bottom through openings 40 provided in the plane portions 28 in such manner as to clamp the members down upon the shoe bottom by the tack heads. To permit the passage of the tacks the wipers Ill are provided at their wiping edges with openings 42 extending through them from the recesses 26 in directions perpendicular to the plane of the wipers, in which there may be inserted, for example, the nozzle of a hand tacker. After the upper-holding members have thus been fastened to the shoe the wipers are withdrawn from the shoe by retracting them from over the shoe bottom, the spring clips 38 slipping out of the recesses 38 as the wipers are retracted.

In the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the wipers 44 are provided in their wiping faces with curved recesses 48 of less depth than the thickness of the wipers and terminating laterally short of the wiping edges of the wipers instead of extending to these edges as in the construction previously described, and formed to enter these recesses are correspondingly curved upper-hold ing members or plates 48 and 50 (Fig. 8) of a contour approximately like that of the edge of the end portion of the shoe bottom, the construction being such that when these members are in place in the recesses 48 their lower faces are flush with the portions of the wiping faces of the wipers that are beyond the recesses. The upperholding members are thus in wiping contact with the upper between the wipers and the bottom of the last in fixed relation to the wipers as the wipers are moved inwardly over the shoe bottom. Projecting from the members 48 and 50 are studs 52 and 54 arranged to enter recesses or openings 55 and 60 extending through the wipers from the recesses 46 to assist in positioning and holding the members in proper relation to the wipers. The members 48 and 50 are provided with openings to receive tacks t driven into the shoe bottom in directions substantially perpendicular to the shoe bottom to fasten the members to the shoe and to clamp them down upon the shoe bottom by the tack heads; and to permit the driving of the tacks the wipers are provided with openings 82 extending through them from the recesses 48 in directions perpendicular to the plane of the wipers, through which the tacks may be inserted, for example, by use of a hand tacker presented with its nozzle in the openings 62. The member 48 is further provided with an offset portion 64 arranged to overlap the member 50 in sliding contact therewith as the wipers are closed inwardly over the shoe bottom, and in this overlapping portion there is provided an opening to receive a tack t which may be inserted in the V-shaped space between the wipers when the latter are in their closedpositions, as illustrated in Fig. 6. In the forward end of the member 58 is a notch 66 (Fig. 8) to receive the shank of the tack. The tack t thus serves to clamp both members down at the extreme end of the shoe bottom. To provide room for the offset portion 84 the wipers are provided with recesses 88 which are deeper than the recesses 48. It will be understood that after the tacks have geen driven the wipers are first moved upwardly away from the shoe bottom to detach them from the studs 52 and 54, after which they are retracted from over the shoe bottom. Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising a device so formed as to adapt it to be applied to end-lasting wipers prior to movement of the wiper's inwardly over the bottom of a shoe and to be fastened to the shoe to hold the upper in lasted 'position'after it has been carried inwardly over the shoe bottom by the wipers, said device-having a portion thereof arranged to project under the -wip'ers for engagement with the upper and another portion arranged to project over the wipers to support the device on the wipers.

16. .Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising a device so formed as to adapt it to be applied to end-lasting, wipers prior to movement of the wipers inwardly over thebottom of a shoe and to be fastened to the shoe to hold the upper in lasted position after it has been carried inwardly over the shoe bottom by the wipers, said device having a portion thereof arranged to project under the wipers for engagement with the upper and having spring clips arranged to engage the top faces of the wipers to retain the device 'on the wipers.

17. Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising a device so formed as to adapt it to be applied to end-lastingwiperspriorto movement of the wipers inwardly over the bottom of a shoe on a last and 'to be fastened to the shoe to hold the upper in lasted position after ,it has been carried inwardly 'over the shoe ,bottom by the wipers, said device having a portion thereof arranged to lie between the wipers and the bottom of the last when the wipers are over the shoe bottom and another portion curved transversely of the wiping edges of thewipers to embrace said edges and thereby assist in supporting the device on the wipers.

Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising members formed to enter recesses provided in the wiping faces of end-lasting wipers to be carried by the wipers inwardly over the bottom of a shoe and attachable to the shoe for holding the upper in lasted position, said members having portions curved transversely of the wiping edges of the wipers for embracing said edges.

Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising end-lasting wipers for wiping the marginal portion of an upper inwardly over a sole on a last around an end of the shoe bottom, said wipers having recesses in the faces thereof that are opposite the bottom face of the last,'and a device formed to enter said recesses to be carried by the wipers inwardly over'the shoe bottom in substantially fixed relation to the wipers, said device being attachable to the shoe to hold the upperin lasted position when the wipers are withdrawn from the shoe.

Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising end-lasting wipers for wiping the marginal por-' tion of an upper inwardly over a sole on a last around an end of the shoe bottom, said wipers having in the faces thereof that are opposite the bottom face of the last recesses extendingalong their wiping edges and extending also to said edges, and a device formed to enter said recesses and also to extend over the wiping edges of the wipers to be carried by the wipers inwardly over the shoe bottom in wiping contact with the upper, saiddevice being detachable from the wipers for holding the upper in lasted position.

Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising end-lasting wipers for wiping the marginal portion of an upper inwardly over'a sole on a last around an end of the shoe bottom, said wipers having in the faces thereof that are opposite the bottom face of the last curved recesses extending along the wiping edges of the wipers and extending also to said edges, and curved members formed to enter said recesses and having portions arranged to extend over the wiping edges of the wipers to be engaged by the wipers to'force the a members inwardly over the shoe bottom, said members having openings thereintoreceive fastenings driven into the shoe bottom to fasten them to the shoe for holding the upper in lasted position. i

Means for use in lasting'shoes, comprising end-lasting wipersfor wiping the marginal portion of an upper inwardly over a sole on a last around an end of the shoe bottom, said wipers having recesses in the faces thereof that are opposite the bottom face of the last and having openings extending through them from said recesses in directions perpendicular to the plane of the wipers, and a device formed to enter said recesses to be carriedby thewipers inwardly over the shoe bottom, said device being attachable to the shoe by fastenings inserted through said having in the faces thereof that are opposite the I openings in the wipers for holding the upper in lasted position.

39. Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising end-lasting wipers for wiping the marginal portion of an upper inwardly over a sole on a last around an end of theshoe bottom, said wipers having in the faces thereof that are opposite the bottom face of the last recesses extending lengthwise along their wiping edges and terminating laterally short of said edges, and members formed to enter said recesses to be carried by the wipers inwardly over the shoe bottom, said mem-' bers being attachable tothe shoe for holding the upper in lasted position when the wipers are withdrawn from. the shoe.

40. Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising end-lasting wipers for wiping the marginal portion of an upper inwardly over a sole on a last around an end of the shoe bottom, said wipers having in the faces thereof that are opposite the bottom face of the last recesses extending lengthwise along their wiping edges and terminating laterally short of said edges and having also openings extending through them from said recesses, and members formed to enter said recesses to be carried by the wipers inwardly over the shoe bottom, said members having openings therein arranged to receive fastenings'driven into the shoe bottom through said openings in the wipers to fasten them to the shoe for holding the upper in lasted position.

41. Means for use in lasting shoes, comprising end-lasting wipers for wiping the marginal portion of an upper inwardly over a sole on a last around an end of the shoe bottom,said wipers having in the faces thereof that are opposite the bottom face of the last recesses extending lengthwise along their wiping edges and terminating laterally short of said edges and having also open ings extending from said recesses transversely of the plane of the wipers, and members formed to enter said recesses to be carried by the wipers inwardly over the shoe bottom and having thereon projections arranged to extend into saidopenings in the wipers, said members being attachable to the shoe by fastenings driven into the shoe bottom for holding the upper in lasted position. 42. That improvement in methods of lasting shoes which consists in wiping the marginal portion of an upper initially inward over the bottom of a last and over a sole on the last around an end of the shoe bottom so that said marginal portion lies throughout its width in generally parallel relation to the bottom of the last by the use of means operated in wiping contact with the upper by the end-embracing wipers of a lasting machine, and thereafter fastening said means to-the shoe in such manner as to hold the upper pressed upon the sole toward the bottom face of the last around the end portion of the shoe bottom independently of the wipers and removing the shoe from the machine with said means fastened to it.

43. That improvement in methods of lasting shoes which consists in wiping the marginal portion of an upper initially inward over the bottom of a last and over a sole on the last around an" end of the shoe bottom so that said marginal the sole toward the bottom face of the last around the end portiono-f the shoe bottom independently of the wipers and removing: the shoe from the machine with said means fastened to it.

44. That improvement in methods of lasting shoes which consists in applying to the end-embracing wipers of a lasting machine prior to the operation of said wipers on a shoe means to be operated by the wipers in wiping contact with the upper and by the use of said means and the I wipers wiping the marginal portion ofthe upper inwardly over the bottom of the last and over a sole on the last around an end of the shoe bottom so that said marginal portion lies throughout its width in generallyparallel relation to the bottom of the last, and thereafter fastening said means to the shoe to hold the upper pressed upon the sole toward the bottom face of the last independen'tly of the wipers and removing the shoe ated in wiping contact with the upper by the endembracing wipers of a lasting machine, and thereafter fastening said plates to the shoe to hold the upper in lasted position independently of the wipers and removing the shoe from the machine with said plates fastened to it.

46. Thatrimprovement in methods of lasting shoes which consists in applying to the endembracing wipers of a lasting machine prior to their operation on a shoe plates to be operated in wiping contact with the upper by the wipers and by the use of said plates and the wipers wiping the marginal portion of the upperiinward- 1y over the bottom of a. last and over a sole on the last around an end of the shoe bottom so that said marginal portion lies throughout its width in generally parallel relation to the bottom of the last, and thereafter driving fast'enings into the shoe bottom to fasten said plates to the shoe in such manner as to hold the upper pressed upon the sole toward-the bottom face of the last independently of the'wipers and removing the shee from the machine with the plates fastened to it.
