Description
T. A. VAN NORDEN.
Tobacco-Pipe.
No. 200,882. Patented March 5,1878.
- enfm 3 PUNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. THOMAS A. VAN NORDEN, on QUINCY, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 200,882, dated March 5, 1878; application filed 1 January 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs A. VAN Non- DEN, of Quincy, in the county of Plumas and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saliva-Chambers for r Tobacco-Pipes, which invention is fully set the proper passage of the smoke.
It consists in a saliva chamber or receptacle entirely in the stem, or connected directly to the bowl at one end, and having a bent tube entering it at one end, and a hinged cap carrying the stern covering the other end, of the receptacle, and adapted to be locked to the shell of. the same .by a catch, and carrying a bent tube not in line with the first-mentioned 'tnbe.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the bowl of the pipe B, the'stem, and O the saliva-chamber, secured to the neck of the pipe. This chamber has a tube, a, which projects from its bottom and enters the passage in the bowl, and also rises into the chamber up to or near the hinged cap D. This tube may be situated either in the center of the chamber or at the side, as it serves to lead the smoke from the bowl, and to prevent the passage of any saliva or moisture from the chamber back into the bowl. The cap or cover D is provided with a socket to receive the end of the stem B, and it has also a tube, b, projecting into the chamber for a short distance below the bottom of the cap. This second tube is placed or bent so as to be out of line with tube a, in order to cause the saliva or moisture condensing in the stem to drop or flow into the chamber, and not into the tube a. As thus constructed, the chamber acts to collect the liquid accumulating in the pipe during the operation of smoking, and allows the pipe to be easily cleaned after use.
Instead of having this chamber connected directly with the bowl of the pipe, it may be placed and combined directly with the stem, as shown at E in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings; but in such case the construction will be identical with that hereinbefore described. The use of this smaller chamber may be desirable in pipes of small size.
Having thus fully described my invention, what, I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pipe, the combination, with the shell of a saliva-chamber, and a tube, on, entering one end of said chamber, of the hinged cap D, covering the opposite end of the chamber, and locked to the shell of the same by a catch, and carrying the tube b, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of November, 1877.
