This invention relates to a ball throwing device for a miniature base ball game in which the mechanism is designed to enable the various plays of the game to be under the control of the'individual players on each side and the results of the plays to be dependent on the individual skill of the players instead of being merely the result of chance or operation of purely mechanical devices.

A game board is provided, generally rectangular in shape and having the usual players positions indicated or delineated thereon. A free swinging bat mechanism is provided which is not controlled by or connected to the pitching mechanism or device. The pitching device to which this application is specifically directed is arranged and designed to provide for the control of the delivery of the ball to the batter, both as to speed and direction, thus enabling the player operating the pitching device to simulate the actual delivery of the pitcher in the regular base ball game. This pitching or ball throwing device is also adapted to be utilized at any or all of the several players positions, as will be understood from the description thereof hereinafter.

This application is a division of my application filed February 4, 1933, under Serial Number 655,199, which application is directed to the base ball board and apparatus as a whole.

In the drawing in which the invention is illustrated, like parts in the several views have been given the same reference numeral.

Fig. 1 is a. perspective view of a ball throwing or pitching device mounted upon the board at one of the players positions.

Fig. 2 is a vertical section, somewhat enlarged, showing the receptacle for the ball.

The device consists of a cup-shaped receptacle 1 having a bottom portion enclosed on three sides and open at the front, the rear side being formed to be engaged by the finger of the player and manipulated to bring the receptacle to a predetermined position. This may be provided by the straight vertical rear wall, as shown in Fig. l, or the upper edge may be rolled over, as shown at 5 in Fig. 2, as may be desired. The front edge of the bottom portion of the receptacle I may be slightly cut back, as shown in Fig. l, or may be bent slightly upwardly, as shown at 6 in Fig. 2, either with or without the cut-back portion, as may be desired. The purpose of the bent-up portion 6 is to prevent the ball from rolling out unintentionally before the device is operated, as may be desired.

The receptacle 1 is carried by a resilient and yielding support in the form of a flat spring member 2 which is attached at its central portion to a post 3, which post is rotatably mounted upon the board 4 at the pitchers position or at any other player's position, as may be desired. The conplete game board is shown in the parent application heretofore noted. The ends of the spring support 2 are bent inwardly and attached to the side walls of the receptacle l, as shown in Fig. 1.

The ball is placed in the receptacle and the player manipulates the same by finger pressure, to either side, up or down, and draws it back to the required extent so that, when released, the ball is shot forward, the direction, speed and trajectory thereof thus being under the control of the operator and depending upon his individual skill. The post 3 may be rotated or swung around so as to project the ball in any direction over the field, toward the baseman or catcher at will. Also, similar ball throwing devices may be provided for each baseman, fielder, etc., so that the plays of a regular game may be simulated, the success of the plays being, as will be obvious, dependent upon the individual skill with which the ball-throwing device is operated.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

1. A ball throwing device adapted for use on a game board and consisting of a receptacle in which the ball is received mounted upon both ends of a curved spring, a post mounted upon the board and adapted to be rotated, said spring being attached intermediate its ends to andsupported directly by said post, said receptacle being manipulated by the player to control the direction, speed and trajectory of the projection of the ball therefrom.

2. A ball throwing device adapted for use on a game board and consisting of post rotatably mounted upon the board, a receptacle in which the ball is received, a resilient and yielding support carried by said post for the receptacle, said support being a C-shaped spring member at tached intermediate its ends to said post and normally lying in a plane parallel to the board and having its ends attached to said receptacle, whereby the receptacle is adapted to be manipulated by the player to bring the receptacle toward the post or to either side thereof and in, above or below the normal plane of the support, placing the resilient support under tension and projecting the ball from the receptacle when released.
