IMPROVEMENT I'N POCKET-KNIVES FOR OPENING CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,931, dated April 2,1878; application filed December 14, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MARTIN, of Hotchkissville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and Improved Can-Opening Knife, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved knife, showing the can-opening blade partly open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the knife closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and portable knife for opening cans.
In the drawing, Ais the handle of a pocketknife, having the ordinary blades B C, and D is a blade pivoted in the handle A, and provided with a pin, a, which projects from its side, near the back, at about the center of its length, and is provided with a beveled head, similar to an ordinary screw or rivet head. The blade has a straight back, and is beveled or sharpened wholly upon the side opposite the pin, and its cutting-edge extends diagonally from the inner edge to the back. The back of this blade is grooved and out to form a nail-file. A notch, b, is cut in the edge of one side of the handle, for receiving the pin a when the blade D is closed, and the said pin is notched in the end to receive the thumbnail when the blade is opened.
The opener, when used, is driven through Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a pocket-knife, the short beveled hinged blade for opening cans, furnished with the screw a, to serve both in opening the blade and as a stop in opening cans, all arranged as described.
