Description

Nov. 5, 1935. YORGENSEN 2,020,008
HEAD COVERING Filed May 18, 1934 Vf/YTOP ,4rrosv Patented Nov. 5, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to head coverings more particularly designed to protect the head from flying material occasioned by certain operations, and particularly from paint, or colored matter which is applied by a spraying operation, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a hood of this type having a Window which may be readily removed and renewed when ,it becomes stained or discolored.
One form of a hood embodying my invention and in the construction and use 'of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front View of my improved hood.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same shown as covering the head.
Figure 3 is a detail view on enlarged scale showing a fragment of the hood at the window.
Figure 4 is a view in section through a portion of the hood and through the window.
Figure 5 is a detail view illustrating a modification.
Figure 6 is a view illustrating another modification.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 denotes the hood that may be composed of fabric or any other suitable material and of a shape to fit over the head of the wearer, in the particular form herein shown this being in the shape of a bag. which is drawn over the top of the head and which may be secured as by means of a tape 8 passed around the neck and tied at the front portion thereof; a cape 9 comprising the lower end of the hood to rest upon the neck and shoulders of the wearer. A window I0 is made in the front of the hood, in the particular form herein illustrated this window being a hole H of oblong shape cut through the material of the hood and bounded by a window frame comprising a base 12 and an outstanding flange l3 extending entirely around the hole H and secured to the material of the hood in any suitable manner. A backing strip M of substantially the shape of the base l2 may be secured to the inside of the hood around the margin of the hole therein and underlying said base I2. I
A clamp comprising a clamp base [5 and a clamp flange I6 is formed to fit the outer surface of the window frame loosely enough, however, to permit the presence of window material I! which is secured in place by the clamp and which extends across the opening comprising the window, this material being. composed of cellophane or any other suitable transparent flexible material.
In the operation of painting by spraying the 5 paint is present in the air to a greater or lesser extent about the head of the painter, and the hood is for protection of the head. The window is provided to enable the painter to observe the operation, but the paint besmears this window and requires it to be either cleaned or renewed frequently. .Owing to the nature of the material the cleaning of the window is practically im possible and it therefore becomes essential to provide means for readily renewing the window 15 which is easily accomplished by my improved structure illustrated and described herein.
That form of the structure shown in Fig. 5 is very similar to that just described the only difference being that in place of the clamping 20 frame a clamping cord I8 is provided which is more or less elastic in its nature, and in Fig, 6 this clamp member is in the form of an endless spring l9 which may be stretched over the flange l3 of the window frame.
I claim:
1. A head covering comprising a hood constructed to fit over the head and having a window opening, a frame bounding said opening and including an outwardly projecting flange, a flexible transparent cover extending across said opening, and a fastening member extending around said flange to hold said transparent cover in place.
2. A head covering comprising a hood constructed to fit over the head and having a window opening, a frame bounding said opening and comprising an outwardly projecting flange, a flexible transparent cover extending across said opening, and a fastening member constructed to fit said flange and clamp said cover in place thereon with its edge folded over the edge of said flange.
3. A head covering comprising a hood constructed to fit over the head and having a window opening, a frame bounding said opening and including an outwardly projecting flange, a flexible transparent cover extending across said opening, and an elastic member fitting over said flange to secure said cover in place.
