' 6 Claims. (01. 132 45) The present invention refers to means for use in beauty shops and other hair treating establishments for protecting persons ears during such treatments.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive device which may readily be applied, which is sanitary, and which can be worn by the person receiving hair treatment without discomfort.

To this end, the invention consists of the combinations hereinafter fully explained and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of which:

Fig. 1 shows a structure of my invention as it is applied to the head of a person preparatory to receiving hair treatment;

Fig. 2 illustrates the device as it appears before it is applied;

Figs. 3 and 4 are views, on a larger scale, showing the construction of the ear shields proper;

Fig. 5 illustrates a modified structure and the method of applying this structure to the head; and

Fig. 6 shows this structure detached from the head.

The device of my invention, as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, comprises a soft and pliable band I made from any suitable, fine-textured fabric or some water-resisting material such as rubber or the like. Ear shields 2 and 3 are shown attached to this band, and these shields should be substantially alike except that they are made one right and one left to suit the position of the ears of a persons head. Each shield should be made from thin, soft, pliable and water-proof material shaped with an opening 2*, 3 of a size to admit a folded ear and shaped to permit the ear to unfold and to resume its natural position within the shield. The edge 2, 3 of the opening should be slightly flared to provide a continuous rim, shaped to rest snugly against the skin in order to prevent entrance of water to the material of the shield.

The method of applying the device to the head consists in first placing the center portion of the band across the forehead. Then to fold the ears and insert them within the shields, whereupon the ends of the band are folded around the back of the neck and to the front to permit the free ends to be tied into a suitable knot or bow.

To suit heads of different sizes, it is my intention to manufacture these devices in various sizes, but it is, of course, also possible to make the center portion of the band I somewhat elastic in order to permit it to accommodate itself to the various size heads.

In. the structure of Figs. 5 and 6 a band 10 is fitted with ear shields l I and 2 substantially shaped and constituted as above described. Intermediate these shields are shown provided enlargements Ill and Ill of the band, and these 5 enlargements are shown made with rightand left-hand perforations of the proper size for the insertion of the ears.

In applying this structure to a head, the center portion of the band I 0 is first placed over 10 the forehead, and the perforated enlargements Ill and W are slipped over the ears, whereupon the band is folded around the back of the neck to bring the shields l l and I2 to position of alinement with the ears, whereupon they are placed over the ears in the same fashion the shields 2 and 3 are mounted. The free ends of the band may then be folded over the forehead and there suitably tied together.

While this modified structure is somewhat more complicated than the first named device, it has the advantage that the shields come to rest upon the enlargements Ill and I0 and not directly upon the skin. As the band, including its enlargements, may be made from very soft and smooth material, this type of device may be found more comfortable. This modification has the further advantage that the free ends of the band are not tied around the neck, a construction which may appear uncomfortable to some sensitive persons, and it is important to note that the band of my invention, at the point where it is attached to the shields, is flared substantially as indicated at l l of Fig. 1 and similarly in Fig. 5 to take in nearly the full length of the shield. This construction is found preferable in order to draw the shield and the ear within the shield snugly against the persons head. If the band were left narrow at the point of attachment to the shield, there is the danger that the upper and lower extremities of the shield may not hug the skin snugly enough to prevent the entrance of water.

While I have shown my invention in its preferred forms, I wish to state that I reserve the right further to modify the device so long as I remain within the scope of the following claims.

It may, for example, be found desirable to fit the ends of the band with suitable fastening means such as snub fastener portions l5, Hi of Fig. 2. When such fastening elements are employed, it 5 is not necessary to tie the ends of the band, but it may be found necessary to make not only the center portion, but the entire band somewhat elastic in order toaccommodate the device to heads of different sizes. Such fasteners may, of

course, also be incorporated in the structure of Figs. 5 and 6 if preferred.

I claim: g

1. An ear protecting device comprising a soft, pliable band having intermediate its ends waterproof shields arranged transversely of the band for covering the ears when the band is tied around a persons forehead, ears and nape. V

An ear protecting device comprising a soft, pliable band having intermediate its ends waterproof shields arranged transversely of the band and provided with a soft, pliable rim to fit the skin around the ears for covering the ears when the band is tied around a persons forehead, ears and nape. An ear protecting device comprising a soft, pliable band having intermediate its ends waterproof shields arranged transversely of the band proof shields for covering the ears when the band is tied around a persons head, the band being intermediate said shields provided with perforated enlargements insertable over the ears when the band is wound around the head, whereby upon continuing the winding of the band the 5 shields in turn are mounted on the ears on top of the said enlarged portions. r r 5. An ear protecting device comprising a soft, pliable band having intermediate its ends transverse enlargements fitted with waterproof ear 10 shields, the portion between said enlargements being somewhat elastic in order to fit the'device to heads of various sizes, the shields being shaped to cover the ears when the band is folded around the forehead, ears and nape of the neck;

An ear protecting device comprising a soft, pliable band having intermediate its ends trans: verse enlargements made with waterproof ear shields, the portion between said enlargements being somewhat elastic in order to fit the device to heads of various sizes, the shields being shaped to cover the ears when the band is wound around the forehead, ears and nape of the neck, and means for fastening the ends of the band together.
