DISPENSER FOR CATCHUP AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 10, 1934 Patented Dec. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES 8 Claims.
The invention relates to dispensers for catchup, mustard and other heavy liquids which are ordinarily packed in bottles or jars.
The object of the improvement is to provide a dispensing device for attachment to a bottle of catchup or the like arranged to agitate the thick liquid contents of the bottle and to dispense a uniform quantity thereof with each operation of the device.
A further object is to provide a dispenser of this character which may be quickly and easily attached to a bottle and provided with dispensing means which may be easily operated by a manually operable lever or push rod.
A further object is to provide an agitating device within the bottle arranged to agitate the thick liquid contents with each operation of the dispensing device so that a uniform quantity of the contents of the bottle may be dispensed with each operation.
Another object of the improvement is to provide a normally closed cap upon the discharge spout of the dispensing device arranged to automatically open as the bottle is tipped into dispensing position and to automatically close as the bottle is returned to upright position.
The above objects, together with others which will be evident from the accompanying drawing and following description, or which may be later pointed out in detail, may be attained by constructing the improved dispensing device in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a bottle showing the improved dispensing device applied thereto and in the normal or inoperative position;
Fig. 2, a similar view showing the bottle tilted to dispensing position and the dispensing device operated to dispense a portion of the contents from the bottle; and
Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken as on the line 33, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The invention is illustrated as applied to a catchup bottle of conventional design and the dispensing device is connected to a cap H having the screw threaded portion [2 arranged to be easily connected to the threaded neck 13 such as is commonly provided upon bottles of this character.
The discharge spout I4 extends through and is connected to the cap H and is mounted within the casting [5 having the angular end It provided with a bore ll communicating with the spout Is for dispensing the contents of the bottle.
A heavier metal disk i8 is carried by the cap and connected to the inner end of the discharge spout l tand a depending arm is is fixed to one 5 side of the peripheral portion thereof, the upper portion of said arm being arcuate as indicated at 20, while the lower portion is folded upon itself as at 29 and is bent outward as shown in Figs.
1 and 2, substantially conforming to the contour 10 of the inside of the bottle.
A lever 22 is pivoted at one end to the lower end of the arm !9 as by the pivot pin 23. To the free end of the lever 22 is pivoted as at 24 the lower outwardly curved end portion 25 of the 15 plunger rod 26, at the upper end or which is mounted the plunger 21, preferably having a head 28 of soft rubber or the like cut out on one side as at 29 to accommodate the arm l9 and the guide tube 30 which is located through the cap H and disk is and connected thereto and depends into the neck of the bottle.
The link 33 is slidably located through the guide tube 30, the lower portion thereof being outwardly bent as at 5:32 and the lower end thereof pivotally connected to the lever 22 at a point intermediate its ends and slightly spaced from the fulcrum thereof as at 33.
q The upper end of the link 3! is provided with the slotted eye 3 which may be connected to one end of the operating lever 35 as by the. pin 36. This lever is preferably angular in shape and fulcrumed intermediate its ends upon the pin 31 carried by the lug 33 formed upon the casting l5 and a spring 39 is located around the pin 31, one end being bent under the lug 38 and the other end bearing under the handle portion 40 of the operating lever whereby the parts normally remain in the position shown in Fig. 1 with the plunger in its lowest position within 40 the bottle. If desired the link 3| may be operated as a push rod and the operating lever may be eliminated.
In order to keep the discharge spout closed at all times when the device is not in use and to 45 automatically uncover the same as the device is operated to discharge catchup or the like from the bottle, a cap M is provided for the end of the spout, a lug 42 being formed upon the cap and pivoted as at 43 to an ear 44 upon the cast- 50 ing l5 and a pair of depending counterweights may be formed upon the end of said lug 42 for swinging the cap 4| into open position as the bottle is tilted to the position shown in Fig. 2 55 to discharge the contents from the spout. If desired, a lip 46 may be formed around the spout for the cap 4| to seat on and also to prevent any catchup or the like which may collect at the end of the spout from draining down the outside thereof.
In the operation of the device in order to discharge the contents from the bottle as desired, the bottle is tilted to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the handle portion 40 of the operating lever is pressed toward the neck of the bottle as shown in said figure. As the bottle is tilted, the cap H will swing away from the end of the spout as shown in Fig. 2 and as the operating lever is operated, the link 3| will swing the lever 22 toward the neck of the bottle, carrying with it the plunger 21 which will discharge a uniform amount of the contents of the bottle with each operation.
It will be seen that as the device is operated the lever 22 acts as an agitator within the thick liquid contents of the bottle, whereby the entire contents of the bottle may be discharged by continuously operating the device.
I claim:
1. A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted upon said arm, a plunger carried by said lever, and a link slidably located through the cap and connected to the lever.
2. A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm' upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted upon said arm, a plunger carried by said lever, a link slidably located through the cap and connected to the lever, and an operating lever upon the cap and connected to said link.
3. A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted upon said arm, a plunger carried by said lever, a link slidably located tln'ough the cap and connected to the lever, an operating lever upon the cap and connected to said link, and spring means for returning the plunger to normal position.
4. A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted upon said arm, a plunger carried by said lever, and a link slidably located through the cap and connected tothe lever, one side of the plunger being cut away to accommodate said link and arm.
5. A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted upon said arm, a plunger carried by said lever, a link slidably located through the cap and connected to the lever, and means for normally closing said discharge spout and for automatically opening the discharge spout when the bottle is tilted to dispensing position.
6. A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted upon said arm, a plunger carried by said lever, a link slidably located through the cap and connected to the lever, a cap for normally closing said discharge spout, and a counterweight for opening said cap when the bottle is tilted to dispensing position.

A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted at one end upon said arm, a plunger carried by the other end of said lever, and a link slidably located through the cap and connected to an intermediate portion of the lever.
8. A dispensing device for a bottle and the like including a cap upon the bottle provided with a discharge spout, an arm upon the cap extended into the bottle, a lever pivoted at one end upon said arm, a plunger carried by the other end of said lever, a link slidably located through the cap and connected to an intermediate portion of the lever, and an operating lever upon the cap and connected to said link.
