My invention relates to a display package or carton particularly intended for use for the packaging' of food products such as cookies, crackers, candy and thelike or for medicinal ,-3 tablets or for any product that is put up in packages or cartons for retail sale.

The principal object of my invention is, to provide a package or carton that is formed of cardboard or the like and which has one or more :c of its walls cut so as to provide portions that may be pressed inward a short distance to provide a pocket or recess adapted to receive one or more of the pieces of merchandise that are contained in the package in order that said pieces ai of merchandise may be conveniently displayed through the transparent outer wrapper of the package, thus enabling a prospective purchaser to readily note the particular form and character of the goods contained Within the package g.) or carton.

A further object of my invention is, to provide a display package or carton of the character referred to that may be readily packed and piled one on top of the other or side by side gf, without possibility of breakage of the pieces of merchandise that are displayed on one of the walls of said package.

With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features gg) of construction and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevational view of a portion of one of the carton walls and showing the 45 manner in which the same is cut to form a de- (Cl. 20S-44) carton which may be of any size and shape and preferably formed of cardboard.

Where the wall oi the carton isi cut for the display of substantially circular or disc-like pieces oi merchandise such as cookies, crackers, candy and the like, the iront wall of the container or carton is cut to form a series of arcuate slits II that are disposed in relative circular arrangement, such arcuate cuts being approximately ninety degrees in length and the ends thereof spaced apart to form short uncut portions I2.

From one end of each slit II, adjacent the uncut portion I2, the slit II is extended outward a short distance as designed by I3 and the outer end of this slitted portion joins the end of an rcuate slit i4 that is formed in the cardboard 'forming the wall of the carton a slight distance outwardly from and concentric with the slits I2.

The length of the outer arcuate slit I4 is such that it extends a substantial distance beyond the end portion of the adjacent concentric slit Il, thereby forming a short arcuate tongue or connecting strip I5 that connects the wall of the carton or container with the disc IG that is formed by cutting the arcuate slits II. Thus one end of the connecting member or tongue I5 is connected to the wall of the carton at a po-int intermediate the ends of the adjacent slit II and the opposite end of said slit I4 is connected by means of the uncut portion I2 to the edge of the disc I6.

After the wall of the carton or container has been cut as described, the disc I5 may be readily pressed inward a short distance so as to form a space or pocket between the disc and the wall of the carton with said disc connected to the wall r by the tongues or connecting strips i5 and the circular space thus formed is adapted to. receive a cocky, cracker or other disc-like product.

The connecting members I5 arranged around the edges of the product receiving space or pockpockets and the vertical edges of this member II are bent forwardly at right angles as designated by I8, so as to engage directly against the inner faces of the side walls of the carton to the rear of the front wall therein (see Fig. 3).

The intermediate portion of the inserted member Il' is bent double to form a vertically disposed forwardly extending rib I9 that extends to the front wall of the carton and as a result of this construction two vertically disposed channels are formed immediately to the r-ear of the front wall of the carton and which channels receive the depressed discs i6 and the product that is positioned thereupon.

The space between the spacing member I1 and the rear wall of the carton is filled with the contents of the package, which contents if desired may be packed in a moisture proof bag and after the ends of the carton have been closed the entire carton is enclosed by a transparent wrapper such as cellophane.

Thus the articles of merchandise positioned on the discs I6 are prominently displayed on the front wall of the package and said goods as Well as all printed matter on the container or carton are readily visible through the transparent wrapper.

In 1Eig. 6 I have illustrated the front wall of a carton slitted to form a substantially square depressible portion 2B adapted to receive square articles of merchandise to be displayed and the sides of this depressible portion are connected by short parallel tongues or connecting strips 2| to the wall of the carton from which the member 20 is cut.

Thus it will be seen that I have provided a display package or carto-n that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.

The articles of merchandise positioned on the depressed portions of the carton wall and covered by the outer wrapper of transparent material are conveniently and attractively displayed and by reason of their position beneath the outer face of the front wall of the carton, the displayed articles of merchandise are protected against breakage even when the cartons are piled one on top of the other or side by side for transportation.

It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the Various parts of my improved display package may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a display package, a wall cut through to form a plurality of slits with the end portion of each slit offset from and extending past the adjacent end of the next slit to form connecting members between the wall of the package and that portion enclosed by said slits.

2. In a display package, a Wall provided with a series of slits with one end of each slit offset from and extending past the adjacent end of the next slit and the material between the overlapping ends of the slits constituting an unbroken connection between the wall of the package and that portion surrounded by said slits.

3. In a display package, a wall provided with a series of slits with one end of each slit oiTSet from and extending past the adjacent end of the next slit and the material between the overlapping ends of the slits constituting an unbroken connection between the wall of the package and that portion surrounded by said slits and which unbroken connection lies parallel with the adjacent edge of that portion of the wall that is surrounded by the slits.
