Description

A. L. SNYDER.
Sample ,Reel.
No. 205,149. Patented June 18, I878.
ALVA L. SNYDER,
UNITED STATES-PATENT OFFICE:
or BRYAN, OHlO.
IM PROVEMENT lN SAM PLE-REELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,149, dated June 18, 1878 application filed May 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA L.'SNYDER, of Bryan, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Sample-Reels; and I do hereby declare that the' following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it aphibit samples of goods, particularly of that class that may be arranged upon a web or strip of flexible material, susceptible of being wound in folds and it consists in the employment and adjustment of two revolving reels or frames, so arranged that the arc or circle described by one will be eccentric to and closely approximate that described by the other, substantially as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A is an upright frame, set at a slight backward inclination, and supported in position by hinged or pivoted legs B, connected at their lower ends to the frame A by detachable braces O, hooking over studs or projections or upon the said legs.
D D are two reels or revolving frames, hung at their centers within the frame A, so that the arc or circle described by one will be cccentric to and closely approximate that described by the other reel, the object of which is to alternately fold and unfold the samples upon the said reels, the samples or figures being attached in any known way to a web or strip, E, of textile material, attached at its ends to the central bars or axes of the said reels. This arrangement and movement of the reels permits of the unwinding of the web, with the samples or figures thereon, from one reel, and the simultaneous winding of the same upon the other reel, and vice versa, in order to display or exhibit to the purchaser or to the curious the samples or figures upon both sides of the web without necessitating the change of his or her or their positlon.
Flat or other suitable springs F, adjusted on the axes of the reels, and acting upon the reels, serve to prevent the revolving of one faster than the other, and to retard the revolution of the reels, and thus cause the winding1 tightly of the web or samples upon the ree s.
The reels are operated by cranks b b or other suitable means.
The round or roller 0 in one end of the reels is cushioned or adjusted upon springs cl, and the round or roller 0 in the most distant end of the other reel is similarly adjusted in position, the purpose of which is to render the same yielding, to provide for the amount of material wound thereon.
Among other uses, this device can also be used as a medium for exhibiting a chart or map to a school or others, or scenery to an audience, after the fashion of a panorama.
This invention possesses great convenience in showing samples, &c., protects the same from damage, keeps them clean and always in order, renders them easy of removal and replacement, expedites the exhibiting of the same, and economizes space when in use, and also when out of use.
It will be observed that in my device the fiber or sizing of the charts, papers, or pictures, as the case may be, is not broken, as is commonly the case when. the charts, 820., are wound upon cylinders.
I am aware that a web has been combined with two or more endless rollers; also, that in station-indicators a hexagonal reel has been combined with an apron or web having atension-roller, and therefore lay no claim to such devices.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' ent, is
The combination and arrangement, in a suitable supporting-frame, of the revolving Vreel' 'or centrally-hung frames D D, connected together by a web or strip of textile material,
upon which may be arranged or disposed samples of goods, figures, &c., substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALVA L. SNYDER.
