x J. A. MALONE-Y. Covering for Steam-Pipe, Boilers, 8L0.
No. 208,530. Patented Oct. 1,1878;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. MALONEY, OF GEORGETOWN, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERINGS FOR STEAM PIPES, BOILERS, 800.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,530, dated October 1, 1878; application filed May 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. MALONEY, of Georgetown, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ooverin gs for Steam Pipes, Boilers, &c., and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to novering steam pipes, boilers, or other steam-receptacles with a non-conductin g material, leaving an airspace between the steam-pipe, &c., and the covering, so as to prevent the radiation of, and c&onsequent loss of, heat from the steam-pipes,
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section, showing the covering as applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of a segment of the outer covering or binder.
, A represents a section of covering, formed of straw-board or other rigid paper, which is coated upon the inner and outer surfaces with silicate-paint, or other fire-proof material. B is a steam-pipe, showing the manner of attaching the covering thereto. 0 is a shoulder or brace, which is riveted or fastened to the 00vering in any manner which would suggest itself to one skilled in the art, whereby an airspace is formed between the covering and steam-pipe, &c. D is the outer wrapper or binder, formed of paper, which keeps the sections of covering in place firmly around and about the pipe, &c.
Various means have been resorted to for the purpose of preventing the loss of heat by radiation and condensation; but none are so economical and effective in result as this.
In practice, I prefer to have the shoulders or braces 0 made of polished metal, such as tin, as metals having polished surfaces are known as non-conductors of heat; but I do not confine myself to any particular material for mak in g the shoulder or brace, when attached to a covering for steam-pipes, &c., formed of any material of which paper or straw-board is the product.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A covering for steam-pipes, &c., formed of straw-board or similar material, coated with silicate-paint, and an air-space formed by shoulders orbraces attached or fastened thereto, substantially as shown and described.
2. A covering for steam-pipes, &c., formed of paper, having shoulders or braces attachable and detachable, and a binder or wrapper of paper, substantially as shown and described.
3. A covering for steam-pipes, &c., formed of paper, in two or more sections, having attachable or detachable metallic shoulders or braces for forming an air-space, and a coating of silicate paint, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A covering for steam-pipes, &c., formed of paper, in two or more sections, having attachable or detachable shoulders or braces for forming an air-space, and an outer covering or binder of paper, and a coating of silicate orother fireproof paint, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. A. MALONEY.
