-lwrlsls'r OFFICE l vaosaoes sommo Device Heinrich Kassebaum, 'Halle-on-the-Saale, Germany Application April 22, `1936, Serial No. 35,291!
- In Germany December 31,` 1935 `o laim.- (ce 33-23) My invention relates in general to scribing and has more particular reference to a pantographic instrument more especially adapted to scribe by tracing from a master pattern plate or template'. -5 An important object of the invention is to provide scribing apparatus'adjustable to produce, from the same pattern plate, scribed characters ofvarying sizeand slope o-r-inclination. A further object is to provideapparatus adjustl0 able as aforesaid without changing the Aspacer'nent of the tracing andscribing points.
Another object is to accomplish ease of operation by providing for guiding themechanism at or nearA its center of gravity.' Another object is to provide apparatus of the character mentioned comprising a ruler or base forming a sliding mounting for a pantographic arm, including means forl disengaging the arm from the sliding mounting at any 'point in its Y length.
Another object is to lprovide apparatus of the l character mentioned including a mounting in the former a ruler of low overall height, the ruler `affording 'a mounting for fa master pattern or template and a sliding mounting for a pantographic arm embodying a scribing pointand a tracing point adapted to trace on the template.
4 Numerous other objects, advantages and inherent functions of the invention willbeeome' ap- 30 parent as the same is 4vmore fully understood from the following description which. taken with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred form of the invention.'
, Referringto the drawing:
3 5- Figure 1 is a top plan view of scribing'apparatus embodying my present invention;
Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 are enlarged-fragmentary views showing various adjusted positions of the` apparatus; and l y 40 Figure is a sectional View taken substantially along the line 6-3 inFigure 1, l
To illustrate the-invention I -have shown. on the drawing, a scribing apparatus 9 comprising support means carryingI a scribing point Il, a.
45 tracing point I3. land a'slidin'g pivot Il, The
support means comprises a preferably/'extensible arm carrying the sliding pivot I3. preferably at' one end of the arm, the arm also carrying a` swingablecross piece 2| 'pivoted thereon. prefer- 50 ably at the other end oi' the arm. and the arm,
as shown, preferably comprises the relatively and adjustably extensible portions I1 and Il. The cross piece 2-I carries lthe scribing and tracing I 'points I I and I3,and also is provided with a stop 55 plate 2l. l'. hesliclin'gpivot vI l comprises'adisk ,adapted to ilt into a slot in a, slide element 21 which travels .in a guide I23 formed in a base l 4plate or support 3l. The support 3l also affords a mounting for a tracing template 33, the mount'- ing providing a shouldered abutment adapted 5 to engage an edge of the template for the purpose of aligning the same with the groove 25. 1 The sliding arm portion I1 preferably carries the sliding pivot I5 at one end thereof and extendsy adjustably within the extensible portion I9, which 10 preferably carries suit-able clamping means for securing the parts in adjusted position. The portion I1 at or near its end remote from the sliding pivot I5 isformed with a stop, preferably comprising a pin 3G carried on thearm portion l5 I1.' The stop plate 23 is adapted to cooperate with the pin 36 when the extensible arm isin collapsed or compres-sed position and is also adaptedwhen the'arm isfextended, :to cooperate directly with the arm portion I9 so that the cross piece 2| may 20 be securedselectively in 'any one of the four positionsfillustrated in Figures 2v through 5.- `The 'cross piece 2| may thus be adjusted atvariou's inclinations with respect to the arm portion I9 and thereby providefor four types of reproduc- 25- tion-from'the tracingtemplate 33, tofwit, small u and large lettering in upright or inclined form; and the parts mayfbe arranged so that all letters produced from a'given template may have un'iform width, regardless of height or inclination. 30
1l When the sliding arm portion I9 is extended one canobtain large or small upright lettering,
large letters being obtained Vby turning the cross piece 2| to the, position shown in. Figure 2, wheref in 4a flange 31 at the lower portion of the plate 35 23 engages the edge of thearm portion I9; small letters are obtained' by turningthe parts to the position shown in Figure 3, in-which a downf wardly turned flange 33, at the upper end of the plate 23.-engages the side of the arm portion I3. 40
. When the sliding arm I9 is in depressed position so that the pin 38 is in position toI engage thestop plate 23, one can produce either large or small inclined lettering, large letters being produced by. turning the arm 2i to the position 45 I' shown inFigure 4, wherein va shoulder 4I on the plate 23 engages the stop pin 36; small inclined letters being produced by turning the arm 2| to the position shown in :Figure 5, wherein a shoulder 43 engages the pin 33. l -f The sliding disk I3 is guided in the groove 25 4and is held in place by a protrusion 45 formed on the way 21 at one side only, so that the disk .ls prevented from leaving the groove yvertically vwhen in theposition for lettering. but can be 554 easily removed by tilting .the same when it is de is then moved along the character inscribed on the template and thus acts as a guiding point, a second guiding point being provided by the sliding pivot disk I5 operating in the groove 25,
which thus restricts the movement of the writing point H so that a character corresponding to that being traced on the template is written Aby the' scribing point Il.
It is thought that'the invention and its numerous attendant advantages will be fully understood from the foregoing description, and it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the form,
construction, and arrangement of the severall parts of the illustrated apparatus without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention or sacrificing any of its attendant advantages, the form herein described beingmerely for the purpose o'f demonstrating the invention.
-I claim:
