- Figure 5 is a sectional vview ta on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
- The'shank members 5 have secured to'one end generally at 8 handles 9 of wood or other suitable material.
- 1' t 'I Secured to the shank member 5 at the lend thereof remote fromrthe handles 9, in' any 'suitable manner, as for example, by being integral therewith are elongated longitudinally tapered ljaw members I0. Y
- the members IIl are' hollow and accommodate electric heating elements inthe form of resistance wires II embedded in lsuitableinsulation I2 as shown.
- the resistance wires II are electrically connected with the wires of an electric cord I3, the

- the jaws I0 are identical in cross section, each being substantially cylindrical throughout its entire length.
- one of the jaws indicated by the reference nu meral YIlia is substantially cylindrical throughout its entire length While the other of the jaws'indicated generally by the referencenumeral Ib is substantially cylindrical for one-half of its circumference;4 and at opposite sides of the jaw the cylindrical surface of the jaw merges into flat surfaces I5 which converge toward the clamping face of the jaw and at said clamping face merge with ai substantially flat clamping surface I5, the jaw VIflb being of the cross sectional shape' asbest shown in Figure 5.
- the heating elements II are arranged in a house circuit through the medium of the electric cord I3 in a conventional manner for heating the'jaws of the device.
- 'I'he article to be crimped or curled whether it be strands of hair, table cloth, bed cloth, a curtain or the like has a 1 portion thereof clamped between the jaws and is Y held iirmly between' the jawsby reason of the devised a simple and economical electric curling or crimping device which may be used with equal facility for curling or crimping either the hair or household article such as bedspreads, curtains or the like.
- the device of the present in- Cil Vention when used for curling hair is used substantially in the same manner as the well known type of hair curling tongs are used. Strands of hair at the end thereof are clamped between the jaw members l and the hair is then. wound around the closed jaw members in, an obvious manner. Within a comparatively short time the device is released and then with subsequent strands of hair the operation. is completed, and by continuing such operations until the curling of all the hair has been, completed a wave is given to the hair that will have a reaso-nable amount of permanency. Where a tapered wave in the hair is desired the device; is held vertically, but for a marcel wave the device is applied horizontally, and for such a wave, in-
- the material to be crimped or ruffled has a portion thereof placed between the jaws l0 and is gripped between the jaws, the jaws being brought together to securely clamp the. material therebetween. Then the left hand of the operator is placed on the material to hold the material more or less taut while with the right hand the crimping device is given a half turn to the right and held in that position for a short period of time after which the device is released and on. a next adjacent portion of the article the operation just described is repeated.
- An electric curling and crimping device comprising a pair of crossed shank members pivoted together, elongated longitudinally tapered jaw members on one end of said shanks, said jaws being hollow, electric heating elements arranged in said jaws, said jaws having inter-fitting roughened areas on their meeting surfaces to effect a positive hold on the article clamped I therebetween.
