Description

W. B. CONWAY. Gigar-Perforator and Match-Box.
No 210,501. Patented Dec. 3,1878.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEY ETER- w G UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. CONWAY, OF BLAOKSBURG, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES H. MILLER, OF SAME PLACE, AND LORENTZ & SULLIVAN, OF CHRISTIANSBURG,
VIRGINIA, ONE-HALF TO EACH.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-PERFORATOR AND MATCH-BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,501, dated December 3,1878; application iiled October 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. CONWAY, of Blacksburg, in the county of Montgomery and State of Virginia, have invented a new and valu able Improvement in Com bined Match- Box and Cigar-Punch and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective View of my combined match-box and punch, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in boxes for the use of smokers; and it consists in the construction and'novel arrangement of a box and a cigar-punch jointly, the box having a recess to receive the end of a cigar, and a spring punch or cutter working in said recess, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the match-box, which may be of any convenient shape and size, that which is adaptedto the pocket being preferred. I
B indicates arecess in the match-box, of sufficient size to receive the end of a cigar, and of the proper depth to form a gage, so that the punch or cutter will act upon the cigar near its end.
0 represents the punch, which, as illustrated in the drawings, is applied through the side of the recess B, so that when the cigar is turned therein its envelope may be pierced in several places. In this construction the punch works at right angles to the axis of the recess; but, if preferred, it may be arranged to work through its end, so as to make an opening in the pointed end of the cigar. The punch O is provided with a pressure stud or projection, (1, whereby it is operated to penetrate the cigar, being returned to its position of rest with its point near the wall of the recess by means of a spring, I), concealed in the body of the box, as shown.
In the construction illustrated the recess B is made at the closed end of the match-box, the other end being provided with a cover, I); but it is apparent that the position might be reversed and the recess and punch made in connection with the cover without departing from my invention.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The box and cigar-punch jointly, consisting of the box A, having recess B, to receive the end of a cigar, and a spring punch or cutter, 0,-working in said recess, constructed and an ranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed by name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. CONWAY.
