4 Claims.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved baffling device that may be inserted in a pipe stem, cigarette or cigar holder, or the like,
, which cools the smoke materially before it is 5 drawn into the mouth, which also condenses and traps the nicotine contained in the smoke, and
which may be readily cleaned.
The invention is a bailling device having a continuous spiral passage therethrough which is formed in three separable parts, and which may readily be inserted in a pipe stern or in a cigar or cigarette holder or in any device through which smoke or the like may be drawn.
Many types of baffling devices have been provided for pipes and the like, but these either reach a saturation point or are diiiicult to clean or are too expensive or elaborate for normal use and, therefore, it has been found desirable to provide a simple and eiiicient baffling device made of a minimum number of parts, in which the parts may readily be separated for cleaning.
The object of the invention is, therefore, to provide a baiing device that may be inserted in the stem of a pipe or the like, which may be made of metal or other material that will notf absorb nicotine and moisture, and from which the nicotine may readily be cleaned.
Another object is to provide an arrestingdevice adapted to be inserted in the stern of a pipe ,.0 or the like, which is made of several parts, and
in which the parts may readily be opened for cleaning and also readily assembled.
Another object is to provide a cooling device for the smoke from a pipe or the like, which may 35 be insertedY in the stem, and which will also arrest nicotine.
Another object is to provide a baiing device for pipe stems and the like, which may readily be inserted in an opening in the stem, and which is adapted to hold the two sections of the stem together.
A further object is to provide a baiiling device adapted to be heldin pipe stems'and the like, having a spiral passage therethrough, in which the entrance end of the passage is elevated, preventing moisture passing therein.
And4 a still further object is to provide a battling device for pipes, cigar and cigarette holders, and similar devices, which cools the smoke, and arrests the nicotine, which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a device formed in two semi-circular sections, having a cylindrical core, a spiral passage extending around the core, and opening at the opposite ends, and also spiral grooves in the outer surface.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure i is a view showing a pipe with the device inserted therein with part of the pipe broken away, showing the baffling device.
Figure 2 is a cigar or cigarette holder with part broken away, showing the device incorporated therein.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the device with the core shown in full lines.
Figure 4 is a view looking upward toward the under side 'of the upper half of the device.
Figure 5 is a similar View looking downward upon the lower half of the device.
Figure 6 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale showing an alternate design in which the grooves at the outer surface are illustrated opposite hand to those shown in Figures 1 and 2, and' also having part broken away, showing the interior thereof.
Figure 7 is a view looking toward the end of the device that is positioned toward the bowl of the pipe.
Figure 8 is a cross section through the device with the three parts separated.
Figure 9 is a View similar to that shown in Figure 7 looking toward the opposite end of the device, showing an alternate design, in which the outer surface is formed with flat sides.
In the drawing the device is shown as it may be made, wherein numeral l indicates the upper half, `numeral 2 the lower half, and numeral 3 the core.
Each of the halves l and 2 are in the form of a half-cylinder, as shown in Figure 8, and each is provided with the complementary parts of a spiral groove with the, part in the upper half indicated by the numeral li, and that in the lower half by the numeral 5. The webs ii and 'i loetween the grooves are formed with semi-circular openings 3 and 9, as shown in Figure S, and these are curved to correspond with the outer surface of the core 3, which is in the form of a round rod extending through the device, as shown in Figure 3.
The pipe end of the device, which is indicated by the numeral i9, is provided with an opening il extending upward in the upper part I, and this communicates with the groove 4 as shown in Figure 3, and the lower half is also provided with an opening I2 similar to the opening l l, and positioned at the opposite end of the device, and
this opening communicates with the opposite end of the groove 4, thereby providing a complete passage through the device passing in through the opening ll, through the spiral groove, and out of the opening l2. The outer surface of the device is provided with a spiral thread indicated by the numeral I3 in the upper part, and I4 in the lower part. This groove may be of any pitch, size, or design and may be relatively small, or large, as may be desired.
It will also be understood that the groove 4 may be rectangular as shown, or of any shape or design. The outer surface of the device may also be round as shown in Figures l to 8, or may be formed with a plurality of at sides l5 as shown in Figure 9, in which the upper half of the device is indicated by the numeral I6, and the lower half by the numeral l'l.
It will be understood that other changes may be made without departing from the spirit'of the invention. One of these changes may be in the relative size of the device, as it may be made relatively small in diameter as compared with the length, or relatively short, and it will also be understood that it may or may not be used as a means for joining the stem to the pipe, or for holding the two parts together. Another change may be in the use of other means in the outer surface for holding the device in the pipe stem or holder, and still another may be in the use of other means for locking and holding the two parts together.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use the device may be made and supplied with the pipe, or provided as a separate unit, and the pipe and stem may be provided with openings corresponding with the outside diameter of the baiiiing device so that, with the parts of the baffle assembled they may be pressed into the pipe, and then the stem maybe pressed over the opposite end, as shown in Figure 1, so that the device provides means for securing the pipe and stem together. It will be'noted that the end with the upper opening is inserted in the pipe portion of the device, thereby preventing saliva ilowing through the device into the pipe bowl and also facilitating arresting nicotine from the bowl of the pipe.
It will also be noted that as it is necessary for all smoke to pass through the spiral passage, it will have a tendency to cool before it reaches the mouth, and in passing through this continuous passage the 'nicotine will be deposited in the parts thereof, so that smoke entering the mouth will be substantially cool, and also substantially free of nicotine. Making the device in three separate parts makes it possible to take it apart and easily clean each part. The threads in the outer surface provide gripping means by which it may readily be held and it will be understood that the outer surface may be roughened by any means.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
