KESSLER SEWING MACHINE FRAME STRUCTURE Filed Feb. 10', 1936 3 sheetssheet 3 Patented Jan. 11, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE My invention relates to a sewing machine frame structure.
Among the objects of my invention are the following: to create a sewing machine frame 5 structure having an upper portion so attached to a lower portion as to permit both lateral and vertical movement of the upper portion with relation to the lower portion thuspermitting both desired ofl' center stitching and the accommoda- 10 tion of difierent thicknesses and kinds of materials, and such other objects, advantages and capabilitiesas will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying draw- 15 ings a preferred embodiment of my invention yet I wish it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the sewing ma- 20 chine embodying the several features of my invention. I
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same. Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Referring more particularly to the embodiment 5 selected to illustrate my invention, it comprises a frame Ill of two partshaving a base or lower portion H, and an upper portion l2, movably attached to said base H by a pair of adjustable hinge screws. l3. By the use of my adjustable 30 hinge screws I 3, I am able to move" the upper portion l2 of the frame Ill laterally, either to the left or to the right so that the stitching member 65 is thereby positioned of! center for the purpose of stitching in a desired off center man- 35 ner. Integral and extending from the rear of the upper portion I2 of the frame I is an extension l4, having a hole ii, for receiving a bolt H.
A member 16 preferably extends through an open portion of the lower portion II and contacts 40 lever l9 which is fulcrumed on shaft-l8. Adjacent its upper end member l6 has a slot 1| slidably receiving bolt 11. Prior to adjustment, bolt I 1 is loosened so that member I 6 may be moved so that bolt I1 is in the desired position within 45 slot H. When the bolt I1 is tightened, member 16 is positioned to correctly allow the desired lifting clearance of the upper portion l2 as it is lifted vertically and arcuately to accommodate the desired thickness of material. Bolt I! may 50 be loosened whenever desired and member I 6 moved so that bolt I1 is locatedin a different position within slot H and then tightened for permitting a different desired lifting clearance. The lifting operation is effected through lever 55 I9 which is fulcrurned on shaft l8 and has one arm normally in engagement with member I to impart movement to member 18 upon pressure being applied to lever l9. 0! course the adjustment through members II and i6 is to provide lifting clearance during the sewing operation independently of the lifting by lever l9. This insures not only proper clearance but proper pressure on different thicknesses andkinds of materials to the highest degree of accuracy.
The lower portion ll of the frame l0 houses 10 the feeding mechanism 31. of the construction defined and claimed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 78,051, filed May 5, 1936.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In a sewing machine frame structure. a body member' having a lower portion and a separate upper portion, and adjustable means movably attaching said lower and upper portions, said means permitting lateral adjustment of the upper portion for desired off center stitching.
2. In a sewing machine frame structure, a body member having a lower portion. and a separate upper portion, and a pair of adjustable hinge screws for movably attaching said lower and upper portions, said hinge screws, permitting lateral adjustment of the upper portion for desired ofi center'stitching.
3. In a. sewing machine frame structure, a body having a lower portion carrying a feeding mechanism, and an upper portion carrying a stitching mechanism, adjustable means for attaching said upper portion to said lower portion to permit both lateral adjustment of said upper portion with respect to said lower portion for desired oif center stitching, and also vertical movement of said upper portion with respect to said lower portion to accommodate different thicknesses andkinds of material, said upper portion adapted to act of its own 'weight'as a pressure means during a sewing operation. 40
4. In a sewing machine frame structure, a body having a lower portion carrying a feeding mechanism, and an upper portion carryin a stitching mechanism, adjustable means for attaching said upper portion to said lower portion to permit both lateral adjustment of said upper portion with respect to said lower portion for desired oil. center stitching, and also vertical movement of said upper portion with respect to said lower portion to accommodate different thicknesses and kinds of material, said upper portion adapted to act of its own weight as a pressure means during a sewing operation, adjustable means attached to said upper portion for controlling the desired lifting clearances of the upper portion with respect to the lower portion and manually operable means for lifting said upper portion.
5. In a sewing machine frame structure a lower portion, an upper portion, means for movably attaching the upper portion to the lower portion, said upper portion having an extension, said extension having a bolt, a member having a slot, said bolt slidable within said slot and adapted to be tightened at any desired position within said slot so as to permit desired lifting clearances of the upper portion with respect to the lower portion for accommodating difierent thicknesses of material and manually operable means engageable with said member for lifting said upper portion.
6. In a sewing machine frame structure, a body member having a stationary lower portion carrying a feeding mechanism and a separate upper portion carrying a stitching mechanism, a hinge for attaching the upper portion to the lower portion to permit vertical movement of the upper portion and the stitching mechanism it carries with respect tothe lower portion and its feeding mechanism, said upper portion adapted to act of its own weight as a pressure means so that during the sewing operation the stitching mechanism will automatically adjust itself to i apply the proper pressure on difierent thicknesses and kinds of material.
