Description

A. S. WEAVER. Eye-Glass Frame No. 211,119. Patented Jan. 7, I879.
GZZQQJQIQQ Inventor. 1
if f? NJETERS, FHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. WEAVER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EYEG LASS-FRAM ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,119, dated January 7, 1879; application filed November 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. WEAVER, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Eyeglasses; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side view of a pair of .eye glasses provided with my invention, which relates to the devices for connecting the two lenses thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan of the nosebearing as it appears prior to being bent for being applied to one of the lenses and to the elastic connectin g'bow.
Heretofore, in the manufacture of eyeglasses without frames to encompass and receive the pair of lenses, each nose-bearing and the connecting bow-spring have been lapped on each other, and secured by a screw to a separate grooved post having not only a bearing to support it against the periphery of the lens, but ears to embrace thelens and secure the bearing thereto by a rivet going through it and them.
My improvement dispenses with such a post and the connecting'screw, and thus is not only free from the liability of the screw to work loose, but greatly simplifies and cheapens the construction of the connections of the two lenses.
In carrying out my improvementI combine with the nose-bearin gs, of which each has fastening-ears and a curved extension, all in one piece of metal with it, and arranged as shown,
' an elastic connecting-bow,'lapped on and riveted, or fastened by screws or other suitable means tothe said extension, and extended down so as to bear on the peripheries of the two lenses.
My invention further consists in the improved eyeglass nose-bearing provided with the fastening-ears and curved extension projected from it, in one piece of metal with it, and arranged as set forth.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, A A denote the two lenses; B, the elastic connection-bow; G
O, the nose-bearings, each of the latter being re-enforced, in the usual way, with a grooved cap, a, of vulcanite, to bear against the nose when the eyeglasses are in use. Each nosebearing 0 is made of a single piece of plate metal, and formed as a cross, as represented in Fig. 2, after which the parts b b of it are to be bent into parallelism,- and the part c, which constitutes the curved extension, isto be turned or bent in manner as shown in Fig. 1, the part cl being also bent in manner as represented in such figure. At its lower end the part 01 rests against the periphery of the lens, and such lens is inserted between the ears b, and connected thereto by a rivet going through them.
The bow B laps on each of the curved extensions, and projects down to and bears upon the periphery of each of the lenses in manner as represented, such bow being fastened to the said extension by screws, rivets, or other proper devices or means.
D denotes the handle, and E the catch, they being made and applied to the lenses in the usual manner.
From the above it will be seen that each lens A, while connected to the nose-piece Gin manner as described, has a bearing against one foot of the bowB and the foot of the nosepiece.
In the eyeglasses, I claim- 1. In combination with the nose-bearings 0 thereof, provided with the fastening-ears b and the curved extensions 0, arranged as described, the elastic connecting-bow B, lapped on and secured to the said extensions, and bearing upon the peripheries of the two lenses A, all substantially as set forth.
2. The improved eyeglass nose-bearing provided with the fastening-ears and curved extension, in one piece of metal with it, and arranged as set forth.
I ALBERT S. WEAVER.
