Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN H. GREEN, OE PRINCETON, NEW' JERSEY.
MANNER OF CONSTRUCTING AN INSTRUMENT FOR FASTENING DOORS ON THE INSIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,121, dated June 11, 1841.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. GREEN, of Princeton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have inv-ented a new and useful Instrument for Fastening Doors, on the nside, which Tnstrument I denominate the Travelers Security; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
Those persons who are in the practice of traveling are well aware that in many sections of the country the lodging-rooms which they are obliged to occupy are not provided with locks, bolts, or other devices, by which they can be securely fastened on the inside. The travelers security is an instrument contrived to obviate this difliculty, which it does in the most effectual manner.
In the accompanying drawing, A, is a piece of metal which is permanently attached to a double screw ai, a, one portion of which is furnished with a right, and the other portion with a left., handed thread; these threads are tapped, respectively, into the movable claw pieces B, and C; and by turning the middle piece, or thumb screw, A, while the claw-pieces B and C, are kept from turning, said claw pieces will be made to approach toward, or to recede from, each other.
Then this instrument is to be used it is placed with one claw against the floor, and the other claw against the lower part of the door, near to the edge on which it opens, and the part A, is then turned so as to force the claws against the door, and against the floor; or against whatever portion of the doorway may be so situated as to answer the same purpose.
This instrument may be varied in its construction by using a single instead of a double screw, allowing that portion which would constitute the second screw to remain smooth, and to swivel within the socket of one of the claw pieces; but the double screw is to be preferred.
Having thus, fully described the nature of my invention, and shown the manner in which the same is to be used, what I claim therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The manner of constructing the travelers security by combining the two claw pieces with anintermediate screw, furnished with a thumb piece for turning the same, and otherwise adapted to its intended use, in the manner set forth.
BENJAMIN H. GREEN.
