Definitions
- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in typewriting machines generally, although more particularly to improvements in the means for adjusting the tensions of the type action springs and for indicating the amount of such adjustment, as shown in the patent to Myers, 1,983,482, Dec. 4, 1934. Reference is also made to the copending application of Lewis C. Myers, Serial No. 182,591, filed December 30, 1937.
- a manually operable thrust screw is mounted in the rear of the machine frame for adjusting the anchor plate to which all of the type action springs are connected, and an indicator which is operable by the anchor .s plate is located for observation at the side of the machine frame.
- the full force of the type action springs is directed against the manually operable adjusting screw and consequently these springs offer considerable resistance to the thrust movement of the screw.
- the adjusting screw being located in rear of the machine, it is decidedly unhandy for the operator to effect an adjustment thereof and simultaneously observe the indicator which is at the side of the machine.
- a. manually operable element in close proximity to the indicator whereby the operator may readily adjust the combined tension of the springs and simultaneously observe the effect of such adjustment; to provide means for counterbalancing the combined strength of the type action springs, and to provide a manually operable screw which is freely adjustable for varying the combined tension of said springs.

- Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1,
- FIG. 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2
- Figure 4 is a front elevation of the right hand base panel showing the indicator scale thereon
- Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1,
- Figure 6 is a view showing the hand wheel and the upper end of the screw shaft in separate perspectives
- Figure 7 is a perspective view of the indicator pointer.
- the typewriting machine includes a main frame A having a rear wall 5, and side walls ⁇ 6 and 6a which substantially enclose and hide from view the working parts included within the main frame structure.
- a plurality of type actions each of which includes a type bar l pivoted at 8 on a segment 9, a key lever IU pivoted at II on a cross bar I2 which is secured to the side plates of the frame, a front link I3 which 20 is pivoted at I4 4to a cross bar I4a, a link I5 which is pivotally connected to the key lever I0 and to the link I3, an intermediate lever I6 which is pivoted at I'I to the cross bar I2, a link I8 pivotally connected to the front link I3 and the inter- 25 mediate lever, and a link I9 which is pivotally connected to the intermediate lever I6 and to the heel of a type bar 'I.
- a vertically disposed anchor plate is journaled intermediate its upper and lower ends on horizontal pivots 2
- the upper end of the anchor plate 20 is provided with a forwardly extending flange 23 having a plurality of openings 24, there 35 being one opening for each type action spring.
- a universal bar 25 is mounted in the usual manner on the rear wall 5 of the frame and is connected by links 26 to the intermediate levers I6.
- a coil spring 21 is disposed around each link 26 and has its forward end connected thereto and its rear end engaged in the corresponding opening 24 of the anchor plate 2li. Normally the springs 2'I exert a rearward pull on the intermediate levers I6 to thereby normally retain the key levers IIJ and the type bars in their rest positions.
- the anchor plate 2D is adjustable to and fro of the machine in order to vary collectively the tensions of the springs 2'I and thereby vary the touch of the type actions.
- a bracket 28 is rigidly mounted on the cross bar I2 adjacent the right hand side wall 6 of the machine frame.
- This bracket includes spaced upper and lower plates 29 and 30 and journaled in these plates in a vertically disposed worm shaft 3
- worm shaft il is threadably engaged with a worm wheel Il fixed to a horizontal shaft I4 Journaled in the bracket 2l.
- a link 31 has its front end pivotally connected to the pointer arm Il and its rear end pivotally connected to a bracket arm Il fixed to the upper end of the anchor plate 20. It will, therefore, be seen that when the disc 32 is rotated the pointer arm Il will be rocked and the anchor plate 2l will be correspondingly rocked to thereby either increase or decrease the combinedtension of the springs 21.
- the worm shaft Il and worm 8l very little effort will be required by the operator in effecting the desired adjustment of the springs 21.
- the right hand side wall 8 of the main frame is provided with an elongated opening 20 and removably mounted in said opening is a closure plate 40 which is preferably formed of metal, although other material may be employed if desired.
- the plate 40 is provided with an opening 4i through which the disc I2 projects.
- 'I'he plate 40 is also provided with an arcuate opening 42 which is located above and in spaced relation to the opening 4I, the opening 42 being preferably closed by a plate 43 of transparent material.
- Located on the outer face of the plate 40 directly above the opening 42 is a scale 44.
- the upper end 36 of the pointer arm is disposed directly in rear of the opening 42 and in cooperative relation to the scale 44.
- a balance spring 41 has its rear end anchored to a lug 48 fixed to the lower portion of the anchor plate 20 and its forward end removably engaged with one of the notches 46.
- the tensile strength of the spring 41 is substantially equal to the combined tensile strength of all the springs 21, and consequently said spring 41 counterbalances the pull of the springs 21 and insures greater ease in rotating the manually operable disc 32.
- a typewriting machine the combination with a main frame including a side wall having an opening, of a plurality of type actions supported within said frame, an anchor plate pivotally mounted within said frame, springs respectively connecting the type actions and the anchor plate, a worm shaft rotatably mounted within the main frame adjacent the opening in said side wall, s manually operable disc iixed to said shaft and projecting outwardly through said opening, a worm driven by said worm shaft, and operating connections between said worm and said anchor plate for rocking the latter to effect an vadjustment of said springs upon 'rotation of said disc 2.
