This invention relates to visible card indexes and particularly to a card holding clip for use therein.

The invention comprehends the provision of a clip for detachable mounting onfa card holder adapted to cooperate with parts of the card holder in holding loose sliding sheets, split cards, split over-riding sheets and master cards. or any combinations of them, thereby facilitating the mounting and operation of lcose sheets in a master visible index.

The invention further comprehends a clip formed of transparent flexible' sheet material having portions formed for detachable cooperation with parts of conventional 'card holders so the clip may be readily attached to a card holder for slidably retaining one margin of a sheet or sheets against the card holder.

The conventional card holder illustrated-has a sheet i formed with a row of perforations 2 providing a hinge. 'I'he marginal portion adjacent the hinge is stapled to a suitable supporting lug 3 used for detachably mounting the card holder in a suitable index tray or panel in a manner well known in the art. The opposite margin of card holder i has a sheath t embracing the marginal portion thereof and suitably secured thereto by staples 5 in a manner now well known. Card holding sheet l is formed with a plurality of diagonal slots 6 to receive the corners of record cards or sheets mounted on the card holders on the marginopposite to that engaged and supported in sheath 4. Sheet l is also formed with an elongated slot 'l originally formed therein to cooperate with positioning means and sheet feeding devices during the manufacture of the card holder in a manner well known to those skilled in the art.

The present invention uses slot l as a means for detachably receiving clip 8 in its support on the card holder as shown in Fig. 1.

Clip 8 is formed of sheet material of any suitable character, transparent Celluloid being well Vadapted to the formation of the clip. Each clip 8 has a fiat back section 9 and an extension on the upper side edge folded to form a return bend providing a spaced guide flange l0. The ends of section 9 are formed with extensions II projecting in opposite directions and forming securing tongues adapted to extend through slot 1 at opposite ends thereof for engaging the opposite sides of the card holder from that engaged by back section 9. This inter-engagement of tongues Il through slot 1 is clearly illustrated in Figs. l and 3, showing how the clip is supported on the card holder. Since sheet Celluloid is highly flexible material, it will be apreciated that section 9 is flexed to shorten the distance between the ends of projections Il suiciently, to be less than the length of slot 1 whereupon tongues H may be inserted through slot 1 and then released to allow section 9 to resume its normal at relation and thereby interlock with the card holder to secure the clip in position.

Clip 8 is mounted on card holder sheet I in the Q margin folded to provide a forwardly and,up wardly extending marginal strip I3. The fold portion including the lower margin of the card and strip I3 are inserted in sheath 4, with marginal portion I3 formed with suitable index indicia that will be displayed through the transparent sheath when the card holder illustrated is associated with similar card holders in visible indexed relation. Marginal strip I3 is provided at I4 with an opening adjacent the fold portion to display a signal on another record card or sheath inserted in the rear of marginal strip I3. The upper edge of card I2 is engaged under flange ID of clip 8 by flexing the card to shorten the distance between the upper and lower margins to less than that between the sheath and clip 8, whereupon the upper edge of the card is engaged under iiange I and subsequently held close to the face of sheet I of the card holder. In the use of this clip 8 it is not necessary to use the conventional diagonal slots 6 for retaining record cards on the card holder.

In Figs. l to 3 two additional record cards or sheets I and I6 respectively, are shown superposed on record card I2 with one margin engaged in sheath 4 between record card I2 and folded marginal portion I3 thereon, while the opposite margins of cards I5 and I6 are engaged under flange Ill of clip 8 in a slidable manner so that either record member I5 or I6 which is of less width than the card holder may be slidably moved back and forth across, the card holder. The free marginal portion of the uppermost record member I6 is displayed through opening I4.

Record members I6 and I5 respectively, are shown in Figs. 5 and 6, respectively. Fig. 5 shows the visible marginal portion of record member I6 illustrating the ruled areas I'I and I8 on the margin thereof adapted to provide a signal for display through opening I4. Any other signalling means such as colored areas or other well known devices may be applied to the margin of either of record sheets I5 and I6 so they will be displayed through aperture I4.

It will be seen that with these two added record sheets I5 and I6 they can be moved back and forth across the card holder in order to be adapted for use in any one of a series of different applications in keeping records. This slidable mounting of the sheets and their retention by clip 8 provides features of construction that will facilitate additional uses for visible card records including signalling features-in addition to the signal vindicating whether a particular card may or may not be out of the file, thereby increasing the amount of infomation signalled on the visible margin of each card holder, without unduly increasing the amount of build-up in the card holders through the addition of extra sheets.

Fig. 6 shows card I5 with a different type of signal area 20 on the'visible margin thereof. It will be seen from a comparison of Figs. 5 and 6 that either sheet I5 ,r I6 may be used as the top sheet in the record assembly so its signal area may be displayed through opening I4.

In Figs. 7 to 11 the card holder is constructed in the same manner as above described having sheet I provided with supporting lug 3 and sheath 4 on the visible margin thereof. Clip 8 is mounted in slot I as above described, and a pair of record cards 2l arranged in edge to'e'dge relation have one margin engaged in sheath 4 and adjacent portions of the opposite margin engaged under guide ange I0 of clip 8', a free upturned marginal strip portion 22 on the visible edge of each card 2l being engaged over the front face of card 2l and in the sheath as illustrated in Figs. '7 and 8. Marginal strip 22 is provided with a signal aperture 23 in the marginal portion under transparent sheath 4.

A pair of over-riding sheets 24 of approximately equal width to record cards 2| are arranged in edge to edge relation over the face of cards 2I as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 and are provided with fold sections 25 that are engaged around the upper margin of record cards 2| in the manner shown in Fig. '7. It will be seen that the inner upper corners of these over-riding sheets are engaged under guide flange I0 of clip 8 which holds them in position on the record card.

A slidable sheet 26 is inserted over the faces of record cards 2I with one margin engaged between the record cards and marginal strips 22 while the opposite marginal portion of sheet 26 is slidably engaged under over-riding sheet 24 and under guide flange IU of clip 8. Record card or sheet 26 may be slidably moved back and forth over the face of record cards 2l and as shown in Fig. 11 may have signalling portions 2l and 28 for exposure through signal opening 23 to display the desired signal according to the signalling system to be used in the particular record to which this structure is applied.

It will thus' be seen that where over-riding cards or sheets facilitate the indexing or keeping of record information in a file, the structure shown in Fig. 7 provides for the support of a pair of over-riding sheets that can be readily detached from the record by exing the sheet with record cards 2I, outwardly from engagement under flange I0 of clip 8, and then, removing the desired sheet from the record card and replacing it with another if necessary. The signalling feature of the extra card or sheet 26 is also advantageous in that it facilitates the operation of the record for conveying in a visible index, more information than merely the index information on the marginal indexing strip.

It will, of course, be understood that a clip 8 may be used in any conventional card holder of lthe character shown where it is provided with a slot similar to slot 'I or suitable equivalent means with which the clip may be detachably connected, and that in some types of records numerous card holders may not require the use of a clip and extra sheet or sheets, and in such cases the clip can obviously be omitted and the card holder used in its conventional manner.

The invention claimed is:

1. In a visibleV index, a card holder having an inwardly facing flange on one margin, for slidably receiving a card margin under said flange, the portion of said card holder opposite said margin having an opening, and a clip having portions interengaged with said card holder through said opening detachably mounting said clip on said card holder, and a guide fiange on said clip facing toward the first-mentioned flange in spaced parallel relation to said card holder for slidably receiving the opposite margin of said card.

2. In a visible index, a card holder having a transparent sheath on a free margin thereof and formed with an aperture at the side opposite said margin, a clip formed of sheet material folded upon itself to provide a base portion and a spaced parallel ange, and projections on said base portion for engaging through said aperture to detachably mount said clip on said card holdu ksaid clip on said card holder with said ilange er with said flange facing said sheath for eooperation therewith to slidably receive opposite margins of cards for supporting them on said card holder for lateral sliding movement. t

3. In a visible index, a card holder formed of a sheet having a transparent sheath embracing one marginal portion and a slot in the opposite portion of said sheet parallel to said sheath, and a clip,formed of transparent sheet material having a base section formed with a return bend portion on one margin overlying said base in spaced parallel relation thereto, and projections on said base, said projections engagingthrough said slot to overlie the opposite face of said sheet from said base section for dtachably mounting extending toward said sheath for cooperation therewith to slidably receive opposite margins oi' a card for sliding movement of said card laterally over said card holder.

4. In a visible index, a card homer formed of a sheet having a transparent sheath embracing the free marginal portion thereof and an elongated aperture in the opposite portion, and a clip formed oi exible sheet material formed with oppositely directed attaching tongues prothereon extending toward `said sheath, whereby a card may be mounted on said' card holder for lateralir ysliding movement with opposite margins slidably engaged under lthe ilange on said clip and in said sheath.

5. In a visible index. a card holder formedot a sheet having a transparent sheath embracing the free marginal portion thereof and an elongated aperture in the opposite central portion, a clip formed of iiexible sheet'material having oppositely directed attaching tongues projectable through said aperture by ilexingsaid clip to shorten the distance between the endsvof said tongues to less than the length of said aperture, said clipphaving an oiset ange formed thereon extending toward said sheath, a pair of adjacent cards mounted on said card holder having opposite marginal portions engaged under said ange of said clip and insaid sheath respectively, and a pair of folded sheets shorter than the distance between said sheath and clip mounted in end to end relation having fold portions embracing the margin of said cards engaged under said clip with adjacent ends oi said folded sheets at` the folds engaged under the iiange on said clip, whereby said clip retains said folded sheets in attached position on the margins of said cards.
