STATES PATENT OFFGE?,
JOHN -PEIGHTAL, OF PHILPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
l-NIPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FlRE-ARMS.
Speeilication forming part of Letters Patent No.`220,655, dated ctobeiyhl, 1879; applica-tion tiled August 5, 1879.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known' thatl, JOI-IN PEIGHTAL, of lhilpsburg,in the county of Centre and State oflei111sylvania,have invented certai u new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the -lctters ot' reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
This invention relates to au improvement in lire-arms; and it consists in the combination ot' parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln thel annexed drawings, which fully illusit|ate my invention, Figures l and 2 are side elevations. Fig. 3 is a bottom view, and Fig'. t is a section.Y
A represents the lower plate, having' the solid breech ,with lugs b. This plateAis at.-
ihe lugs b are let into the stock A and secured thereto.
The solid breech vformed with the side plate is provided with the iringpinse'. On the under side ot' this plate are lugs c e, which saine by means ol' draw-pin c. .lhe plate A is also provided on its under side with ribs or protections l, in which works the lockingholt, (5. Said locking-bolt is held in place by means of a spring, e, working against a lug, fl, and is operated either by a trigger (direct). inserted at f, or by means ot' a side lever, as shown at Fig. l.
l) represents the upper plate, secured to the barrels l'l b v any suitable means, and provided on its under side with lugs g/ h t. The lne' r/ passes between the lugs e c, and the upper plate is secured to t-he lower plate, and the pin, as hereinbeibre described. Between the 1 lues /z is pivoted a link, l, the lower end ot' which, when the barrels are thrown downward, engages with one side ofthe opening' j G is the extractor, the stem of which works in a V-shaped space formed by the unitingl of the barrels and the upper plate.
The extractor'stem has a slot, 7c, formed in its side, and a pin, l, working therein, to limit it-s movement. I
The lug 'i is provided with a notch, m, in which the loekingdoolt catches and holds the parts firmly together.
rlhc device, as above described, is designed to be used in converting muzzle-loadine;v into breech-loadingtire-arms, and whereby the same locks, cocks, stock, and barrels may be used, thus providing,` an article that can be cheaply constructed, und one that is very efficient in use.
The onstructiouof the plateAaccomplishes several desirable results, among' which are: It avoids the old method cf attachment, Whereby a strap extending down the vupper side 0f the breech, and fastened thereto by means of screws, was used, and by attaching the Vsaid plate anyold stock is utilized and can be used with my construction in a breech-loading arm.
This deviceis designed to be applied to old stocks, the bottoni part of the plate fitting into the hollow formed in thc forward partof the stock, all that .is necessary being to cut away enough ofthe upper portion of the Stock to compensate for the thickness of the plate, and to secure the same, as hereinbefore described.
I laving thus fully described my invention` what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters llatent, is-
In a breech-loading fire-arm, the plate A, havin solid breech a., tiring-runs c', and lugs b, attached to the stock A', as spceiied,'in cour bination with link F, extractor G,with slot 7c, pin l., locking-bar C, spring c, lug t1, plate I), and draw-pin C', substantially as and for the -purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto al'lixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
" JOHN PEIGHTAL.
