Description

J. W. KING &'H. N. BRAKE. YSteaIn-renera/c0r.
fN. 225,617. Patented Mau-1.6, Isso.
ILPTERS, Pl(OT-IJ'I'RIOGHAPHER- WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUSTUS W. KING AND HENRY N. DRAKE, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA.
STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,617, dated March 16, 188Mo.
Application filed August 11, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JUSTUS W. KING and HENRY N. BRAKE, of Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SteamGenerators; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying' drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a steam-generator,
and is designed to provideaconstruction which will accomplish the general purpose of devices of this character 1n an eifective and improved manner.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front perspective view of our steam-generator, looking from above. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
The firebox A connects, by the main line B, with the conical hood C, which latter has its lower portion formed practically in vertical line with the sides ofthe fire-box. An annular water-space, D, is thereby formed between the fire-box top and the hood-bottom, which subjects the water contained therein to heat on three sides', and is adapted to readily and quickly convert the same into steam. The pipe E, which'is coiled within this main flue, communicates with said water-space respectively on opposite sides of the latter, and aids largely in quickly heating1 the water Directly over the main due, and within the conical hood, is located the water-tank F, which is supported on standards or by other means at a suitable distance from the bottom of the hood, thus permitting the products of combustion to have free draft in their passage upward about the sides of the tank. The size of this tank relative to the hood is such as to form an annular draft-passage, a, between the sides of the two, and from this passage the products of combustion pass over the top of the tank, up through the hood, and finally out of the smoke-exit flue G.
TheV tank has a vertical feed-opening, a', which passes the water up therein from the annular water-space below the hood, and its discharge-opening b passes through the side of thehood. The position of the tank is such as to subject it to the direct impact of the products of combustion, and is peculiarly adapted to heat the water contained therein.
The head H of the boiler-cylinder K is seated down within the latter, so as to form the waterfeed reservoir L. A water-feed pipe, M, passes from this reservoir a suitable distance down into the boiler. This cylinder-head is formed with the annular air-chamber c, which prevents the condensation of steam against its under side. The steam-discharge N passes through the cylinder-head, and permits the generated steam to be conducted off free from the water. The water from the boiler is discharged, as desired, by the waste-pipe I. A steam gage cock, R, is connected with the boiler' at any desired point. The tire-box is provided with a false bottom, S, loosely supportedtherein by suitable means, and free to be removed therefrom. A packing or layer of non-combustible material, T, is interposed between said false bottom and the real bottom of the rebox,`and prevents the latter from burning out. l
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In a steam-generator, the combination, with the boiler-cylinder, ofthe head seated therein, and forming a water-feed reservoir, said head being made with the annular airchamber and provided with the steam -discharge, substantially as set forth.
2. In a steam-generator, the combination, with conical hood C, fire-box A, and annular water-chamber D, of flue Bcoilpipe E, tank F, annular draft-passage a, and pipes a. b, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 16th day of May, 1879.
