Description
Dec. 16, 1941. A. G. ADAMS l CORE CAP Filed May 13, v1941 f INVENTOR AGENT Patented Dec. 16, 1941 CORE CAP Archibald George Adams, Three Rivers, Quebec,
Canada, assignor to International Paper Company New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application May 13, 1941, SerialNo. 393,179
In Canada May 14,1940v Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in core caps and paraticularly seeks to provide novel reinforcing means associated with the driving stud-receiving recesses of core caps generally similar to those of the type disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent 1,358,531, granted November 9, 1920 to P. T. Dodge.
Core caps of the type to which this invention relates generally comprise spaced inner and outer concentric sleeves connected aty one end by an integral spacing rim or annulus. Normally, a portion of the inner sleeve is pressed or swaged outwardly to define a channel or recess adapted to receive the driving stud or like element of paper roll handling mechanisms in connection with which the cores are employed.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide in a core cap of the type referred to, means for substantially reinforcing the walls which define the stud-receiving recess.
Another object of this invention is to provide a core cap of the character described in which the reinforcing means comprises a reinforcing'strip having its central portion fitted between the outer wall defining said stud-receiving recess and the opposing inner surface of the outer sleeve, and including side portions extending inwardly from the central portion and disposed in reinforcing engagement with the side walls which define said recess, the side portions terminating in laterally projecting portions disposed in contact with the outer surface of the inner sleeve on opposite sides of the recess defining walls.
Another object of this invention is to provide a core cap of the character described which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture,
With these and other objects in view, the nature of which will become more apparent, the invention will be more fully understood by reference to the drawing, the accompanying detailed description, and the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a core cap constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section generally similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating a modification of the reinforcing means.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 designates a core cap comprising an inner sleeve 6, an outer sleeve l, and an integral rim 8 55 connecting said sleeves at one end thereof. A portion of `the inner sleeve 6 is pressed outwardly` to provideV a recess adapted to receive a driving stud' or lthe like and bounded by side walls 9, an outer wall III and an'inner-end wall I I.
The distinctive feature of the present invention resides in the provision of novel means for reinforcing and strengthening the defining walls of the recess formedr by the outwardly pressed portion of sleeve V6. The reinforcing means is generally indicated at I2f. In its preferred embodiment it comprises a bent strip of flat sheet metal includingV a central portion I4- fitted between the Y outer wall I0 of the recess and the opposing inner surface of sleeve 1, side portions I 5 extending inwardly from the central portion I4 and disposed in reinforcing engagement with the recess walls 9, and curved terminal portions I6 disposed in contact with portions of the sleeve 6 lying at opposite sides of the recess. The reinforcing element as a whole may be welded or otherwise secured in place. In securing the reinforcing element in place the central portion I4 is preferably welded or otherwise secured to both the sleeve I and the recess wall I 0, the terminal portions I6 of the reinforcing element being welded or otherwise secured to the sleeve 6. -When made of sheet metal as described herein the reinforcing element may be easily and quickly fabricated and Ysecured in its proper position between the inner and outer sleeves. It will also be noted that with the construction described herein the side walls 9 of the recess are backed up and reinforced by relatively thin flat reinforcing elements (the side portions I5 of reinforcing element I2) which eX- tend transversely across the annular space between the sleeves 6 and 'I and are rmly anchored to both sleeves.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing there is illustrated a modified form of reinforcing element which may be employed whenever it is found necessary to more strongly reinforce the stud-receiving recess. To this end, the upper edge portions of the reinforcing strip I 2 which are disposed adjacent the rim 8 are provided with outwardly projecting ear extensions I'I. The ears II are disposed in substantially flat contact with the inner surface of the rim 8 and are welded or -otherwise secured thereto to thereby provide the desired increase in strength and rigidity to the applied reinforcing strip I2.
It is of course to be understood that certain details of Varrangement and proportions of parts may be variously modified without exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A core cap comprising inner and outer concentric sleeves, an integral rim connecting said sleeves at one end thereof, a portion of the inner sleeve being pressed outwardly to provide a recess bounded by side walls, an outer wall and an inner end wall and a reinforcing strip having its central portion tted between the outer Wall of said recess and the opposing inner surface of said outer sleeve, side portions extending inwardly from said central portion and disposed in reinforcing engagement with said side walls.
2. A core cap comprising inner and outer concentric sleeves, an integral rim connecting said sleeves at one end thereof, a portion of the inner sleeve being pressed outwardly to provide a recess bounded by side walls, an outer wall and an inner end wall and a reinforcing member having its central portion secured to the outer wall of said recess and the opposing inner surface oi said outer sleeve, Side portions extending inwardly from said central portion and disposed in reinforcing engagement with said side walls.
3. A core cap comprising inner and outer concentric sleeves, an integral rim connecting said sleeves, at one end thereof, a portion of the inner sleeve being pressed outwardly to provide a recess bounded by side walls, an outer wall and an inner end wall and a reinforcing strip bent to provide a central portion tted between the outer Wall of said recess and the opposing inner surface of said outer sleeve, Side portions extending inwardly from said central portion and disposed in reinforcing engagement with said side walls, and curved terminal portions disposed in contact with the outer surface of said inner sleeve at opposite sides of said recess.
4. A core cap as claimed in claim 3 having the central portion of said strip welded or otherwise secured to the outer wall of said recess.
K 5. A core cap as claimed in claim 3 having the central portion of said strip welded or otherwise 4secured to the inner surface of said outer sleeve.
6. A core cap as claimed in claim 3 having the central portion of said strip welded or otherwise secured to the outer wall of said recess and the opposing surface of said outer sleeve.
7. A core cap as claimed in claim 3 having the terminal portions of said strip welded or other- Wise secured to the outer surface of said inner sleeve.
8. A core cap as claimed in claim 3 having the central portions of said strip welded or other- Wise secured to the outer wall of said recess, and the terminal portions of said strip welded or otherwise secured to the outer surface of said inner sleeve.
9. A core cap as claimed in claim 3 having the reinforcing strip welded or otherwise secured to the outer surface of said inner sleeve and said recess.
10. A core cap as set forth in claim 1, in which the side portions of the reinforcing strip are provided with laterally projecting extensions engaging the inner side of said rim.
ARCHIBALD GEORGE ADAMS.
