UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. REED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOILET-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,131, dated May 4, 1880.
Application filed September 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY O. REED, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Toilet-Powder Pad; and I do hereby declare that the'following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my receptacle in a condition for use. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 show the same as it appears when not in use.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of receptacles for toilet-powder and it consists in a bag one side of which is pervious to the powder and forms a medium for applying the same to the desired parts while the other side thereof is impervious to the powder and adapted to distribute or spread the same in the desired manner. With this bag is combined a flap for covering its pervious side when the bag is not in use, thereby preventing loss or waste of powder.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a bag composed of two side pieces, I) 0, one of which is pervious and the other impervious to the powder generally used for toilet purposes, and D is a flap used in connection with this bag.
The materials which I employ in making the bag A are a piece of woven fabric of loose texture and piece of chamois or other leather, the one being pervious to powder, while the other is of an opposite nature; but it is obvious that other materials will answer the purpose.
To form the flap D, I continue the sides b 0 of the bag and join the same about midway between the ends by a transverse line of stitches, c, the part below these stitches constituting the bag proper, while the part above the same constitutes the flap; but, if desired, the flap may be formed of a separate piece of material attached to a suitable part of the bag.
The bag A is filled with powder and closed in an appropriate manner. Then, when it is desired to apply the powder to any part of the person, the flap D is thrown back, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the pervious side of the bag is gently tapped or struck upon the desired part. In this manner the desired quantity of powder may be readily separated from the bag and strewn on the desired spot. The bag is then inverted and the impervious side b used to spread or distribute the powder, as may be found desirable or expedient, and since this side of the bag absorbs any superfluous powder it is practically adapted to the purpose named.
In the act of loosening the powder from the bag the flap D may be used as a handle for manipulating the same; but the primary office of this flap is to cover the pervious side of the bag when it is not in use, so that no powder is lost or wasted. To accomplish this object, the flap D is simply turned down upon the proper side of the bag, as shown in Figs 3 and 4, and, if desired, may be held in this position by a suitable clasp, or in any other manner. If desired,.moreover, the flap D or bag A may he stiffened in a suitable manner.
If desired, the bag A may be made with two pervious sides. In that case two flaps may be used.
I claim- 1. A receptacle for toilet-powder consisting of a bag one side of which is pervious to the powder and forms a medium for applying the same to the desired part, while the other side thereof is impervious to the powder and adapted to spread or distribute the same, substantially as herein described.
2. In a receptacle for toilet-powder, the combination, with a bag the sides of which are respectively pervious and impervious to the powder, of a flap for covering the pervious side of the bag,,substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY O. REED.
