Description

whereby the side guide mechanism'is swung into and out of its operative position, as well as moved laterally for the purpose of side registering the sheets.
Referring to Figure 1, the sheet S is shown in its registered position on the transfer table In so that its leading edge ll abuts against the front registering guidefacesl 2provided on two or more of the radial grippers [3 carried by the impression cylinder l4, and the side guide I5 moves tion depicted in broken lines in Figure 3 and consequently has swung downthe lever 36 and therewith rocked the shaft l6 and its associated parts into their operative position illustrated in Figure 1.v During the upward movement of the shaft l6 said parts are again being returned into their inwidth of the table III as shown in said patent to 7 Stevens. This bar carries the registering guide i5 in a manner that the guide may be adjusted and maintained in different positions longitudinally thereon. A groove is formed in the transfer table II! to accommodate the side guide l5.
The bar I! also has provided thereon one or more brackets 2| each one of which, by means of a clamp 22 and thumb screw 23, may be moved into'different positions over said rod for the purpose of applying the brush 24 carriedithereby at the desired points on the top surface of a sheet to be registered. The threaded stem 25 is mounted to slide within bores provided in the bracket and the brush is adjustably arranged so that, by means of the knurled nuts 26 and 2'! which are threaded onto the stem, the brush can be moved with relation to a sheet on the table ill. The stem 25 is held against rotation within the holes in the bracket 2 i; therefore,'a micrometer adjustment of the brush 24 is made possible by loosening the nut 26 and by then turning the nut 21.
In order to avoid curling up of a sheet along its leading edge and also to straighten out the leading edge of a sheet before it is presented to the front guides I3, I provide a bar 30 which extends crosswise of the table in soy thatit will cover the entire width of a sheet to be registered.
This bar is adjustably secured to the rock shaft l5 by means of arms 3| and clamping brackets 32..
In its operative position, as shown in Figure l, a
gap 33 is left between the bar 30 and the top of a sheet to be registered in order to prevent damage to a sheet. 7
In Figure 2, I have illustrated the side guide mechanism with its associated parts in the inoperative position, namely at the time whena sheet is being fed onto'the transfer table II) by the feeding mechanism of the press. I
In the operation of my novel sheet controlling means, namely during the down-stroke of the registering guide l5 when the latter approaches its I position shown in Figure 1, the brush 24 lightly engages the sheet on the transfer table II] so that, during the final down-stroke, the brush urges the sheet forwardly against the front registering faces I! on the impression cylinder grippers l3 and holds the sheet against displacement on said table.
The bar 30, during its downward movement, causes the front portion of a sheet to straighten out and also prevents any curling upor buckling of th front edge of a sheet while the sheet is bein registered.
The conventional means, illustrated in Figure 3 and which preferably may be arranged on one of the vertical side frames of the press, includes operative positions as shown in Figure 2.
In Figure 4 I have also shown a conventional means whereby the side register I 5 is caused to move laterally for the purpose of side registering the sheets. v r s r i w I a This means broadly comprises a roller track or cam 40, which preferably is secured to the side frame H of the press. The, outer end 42 of the rock shaft l6 carries a bracket 43 on which is 'arranged a cam roller to rotate freely and to extend within the track of the cam); Preferably the rock shaft I6 is guided in a bearing, which may be secured to the reciprocating cylinder carriage 46 by means of bolts 41,-or the like.
It will be understood that when the cylinder carriage 46 and its associated parts move downwardly from their position depicted in full lines in Figure 4 the roller rides within thecam track 40 and is displaced laterally, that is to say to the left, as viewed in Figure 4', together with'the rock shaft 16 and the side guide Him the purpose of side registering a sheet, and said parts will assume the position shown in broken lines in Figure 4. When the cylinder carriage 4'6 ismovedupward during the printing stroke of the press, then the roller 44' and therewith the-side guide mechanism are restored into their inoperative positions shown in full lines in Figure'4.'
I wish it to be understood that, while I have illustrated and described a preferredxform and embodiment of my invention, certain modifications could be introduced without departing from the principle of my invention; therefore, I intend to cover any such modifications which come within the meaning of the appended claims.
