My present invention relates to hinges for Windows and the like, particularly for windows of the type having a sash mounted to swing on horizontal pivots as, for instance, the hinges described in my Letters Patent No. 2,221,058.
The object of my present invention is to provide a hinge of the kind indicated having braking means connected thereto in order to facilitate the stopping of the relative movements of the hinge parts at certain points.
Another object of the invention is to provide one of the relatively movable main parts of a hinge means of the kind indicated with resilient means pressing on a member of the other main part of the hinge at certain parts of the path of movement of said member. A further object of my invention is to provide a leaf spring in one of the relatively movable parts of a hinge means of the kind indicated, said leaf spring being adapted to press on a member of the other hingepart during part of the movement thereof and thus exert a braking effect on said member.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be obvious from the following description of some embodiments thereof, having reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows an elevation of one main part of an embodiment of the hinge, with the other main part indicated by dotted lines,
Fig. 2 shows a similar elevation with the window in an opened position,
Figs. 3 and 4 show partial similar views of two modified embodiments of my invention,
Fig. 5 shows a sectional view on line V-V in Fig. 1, and.
Fig. 6 shows a partial elevation of a further embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing, a main part of the hinge has the general reference letter A, the other main part being referred to by B. Preferably, the main part A is secured to the side member of the window frame E and thus stationary, while the main 'part B is attached to the window sash D, which is thus swingable in the window frame E onan approximately central horizontal axis.
During the first part of the opening move- .ment of the window sash D said horizontal axis is situated at I, where an abutment 2 of the main part B is supported by a corresponding shoulder -3 of the main part A. During this turning movement the pin 4 of the hinge part B passes downwards in the groove 5 of the hinge part A towards the bottom 6 of said groove 5. When it reaches said bottom 6 of the groove 5, the hinge part B is supported simultaneously on said bottom 6 and on the shoulder 3 of the main part A. 'Continued'movement of said part B takes place on the pin 4 turning on the bottom 6 of the groove 5.
' This invention is concerned with the first part of the above movement. In the groove 5 of the hinge part A a leaf spring I is mounted, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive. One end of said leaf spring 1 may be secured to the Wall 8 of the groove 5.
Normally, said leaf spring I occupies a position, in which it narrows the groove 5, as shown in the drawing. The actual shape of said leaf spring may varywithin wide limits and the embodiments shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, are only examples. It is evident, too, that the stiffness of the leaf spring I must not exceed a max imumyalue, where it completely prevents the pin 4 from passing downwards in the groove.
On the other hand, the leaf spring I should be stiff enough to maintain the pin 4 in a position, where it forces said leaf spring I out of its normal position, so that the window can be retained in several different positions between its closed position and the opened position, where the pin 4 is in engagement with the bottom 6 of the groove 5.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 no separate spring is mounted in the groove 5, but one of the walls 9 of the groove is itself made of resilient material and serves the same purpose as the leaf spring I.
It should be obvious that the embodiments of the invention as shown may be subject to several modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention and, accordingly, the above description must not in any respect be considered as a limitation of the scope of my invention.
What I claim is:

A hinge fora window having a frame and a sash adaptedto pivot on a central horizontal axis in said frame, said hinge comprising a bearing member secured to the window frame, a pivot member secured to the window sash, two separate bearing surfaces on said bearing member, two separate pivotal bearing elements on said pivot member each for coaction with one of said bearing surfaces, said pivotal bearing elements being so positioned as to make the window sash occupy a stable equilibrium position with both pivotal bearing elements resting on their bear ing surfaces, the window sash being movable from said equilibrium position towards closed 2. A hinge for a Window having a frame and V a sash adapted to pivot on a central horizontal axis in said frame, said hinge comprising a bearing member secured to the window frame, a pivot member secured to the window sash, two separate bearing surfaces on said bearing member, two separate pivotal bearing elements on said pivot member each for coaction with one of said bearing surfaces, said pivotal bearing elements being so positioned as to make the window sash cc py a stable equilibrium position with both pivotal bearing elements resting on their bearing surfaces, the window sash being movable from said equilibrium position towards closed position on one of said pivotal bearing elements and from the same equilibrium position inthe opposite direction on the other pivotal bearing element, and resilient means for engaging and retaining one of the pivotal bearing elements at various distances above its bearing surface.
3. A hinge for a window having a frame and a sash adapted to pivot on a central horizontal axis in sid frame, said hinge comprising a bearingmember secured to the window frame, a pivot member secured to the window sash, two separate bearing surfaces on said bearing member, one of said bearing surfaces forming the bottom of an arcuated open-ended groove having its center approximately in the other bearing surface, two separate pivotal bearing elements on said pivot member each for coaction with one of said bearing surfaces, said arcuated open-ended groove and the pivotal bearing element coacting therewith forming parts of a projection of the bearing member and the pivot member, respectively, said projections covering and concealing the arcuated open-ended groove and the pivotal bearing element therein, said pivotal bearing elements being so positioned as to make the window sash occupy a stable equilibrium position with both pivotal bearing elements resting on their bearing surfaces, the window sash being movable towards closed position on one of said pivotal bearing elements and in the opposite direction on the other pivotal bearing element, and resilient means in said groove for engaging and retaining one of the pivotal bearing elements at Various distances above its bearing surface.
4. A hinge for a window having a frame and a sash adapted to pivot on a central horizontal axis in said frame, said hinge comprising a bearing member secured to the window frame, a pivot member secured to the window sash, two separate bearing surfaces on said bearing member, two separate pivotal bearing elements on said pivot member each for coaction with one of said bearing surfaces, said pivotal bearing elements being so positioned asto make the window sash occupy a stable equilibrium position with both pivotal bearing elements resting on their bearing surfaces, the window sash being movable from said equilibrium position towards closed position on one of said pivotal bearing elements and from the same equilibrium position in the opposite direction on the other pivotal bearin element, and a notched member extending upwardly from one of the bearing surfaces and resiliently urged into engagement with the pivotal bearing element associated with said bearing surface to retain said pivotal bearing element in various positions above said bearing surface.

In a hinge comprising two relatively movable main parts, a pair of bearing surfaces on one of said parts having their axes spaced horizontally apart in a direction transversely of said axes, one of said bearing surfaces being formed at the bottom end of an upwardly extending arcuate groove having its center of curvature in the axis of the other bearing surface, a pair of pivotal bearing elements carried by the other part and adapted to simultaneously bear on both bearing surfaces in a position of equilibrium, the
pivotal bearing element associated with the bear-I ing surface at the end of said groove being movable through the groove, and resilient means in said groove for engaging and retaining the pivotal bearing element in various positions in the groove above the bottom end thereof.
9. In a hinge comprising two relatively movable main parts, a pair of bearing surfaces on one of said parts having their axes spaced horizontally apart in a direction transversely of said axes, one of said bearin surfaces being formed at the bottom end of an upwardly extending arcuate groove having its center of curvature in the axis of the other bearing surface, a pair of pivotal bearing elements carried by the other and adapted to simultaneously bear on both bearing surfaces in a position of equilibrium, the pivotal bearing element associated with the bearing surface at the end of said groove being movable through the groove, and a leaf spring having a notched portion positioned in said groove to engage the pivotal bearing element movable therein and retain it in an adjusted position.
