Description

C. w. RICHTER.`
Vapor Burner.
Patented Feb. 22, 1859.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. RICHTER, SR., OF MADISON, GEORGIA.
LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,044, dated February 22, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ci-IAS. INM. RICHTER, Sr., of Madison, in the county of Morgan and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specication, in the several figures of which similar characters of reference denote the same part.
Figure l is a vertical section of lamp taken through axes of air tubes. Fig. 2 is a similar section perpendicular to plane of Fig. l, showing arrangement for raising and lowand tubes; removed from font.
The object of my invention is the cooling of the font and other parts with which the fluid comes in contact; and also the regulating the intensity of the light, the invention consisting in the combination of devices hereinafter to be described.
In the drawing A is the font and B the wick inserted in a tube T open at bottom and surmounted by a cap F having perforations e through which the gas generated issues. Below these perforations are pieces a to direct the flame.
The wick B is connected at bottom with a piece f, held by' guide rod mf and screw 7), and made to move vertically by the turning ot the screw. This moves the wick B vertically within the tube T; causing a more brilliant light when the wick is at its highest point than when it is drawn down.
The tube T runs through a circular chamering wick. Fig. 3 is a view of top of lamp ber D, closed at bottom and open attop, havf ing lateral tubes I I leading into it as shown in Fig. l.
The tubes I have their outlets in the cap plate P, and communicate with the external air by the openings cl; so that a flow of cold air constantly enters chamber D. This tends to cool the fluid around 4the chamber, and also cool the lower portion of tube T.
The cap piece H contains a non-conductor of heat consisting of a mixture of plaster of paris and charcoal or, any other suitable substance.
Between cap H and the plate P, is inserted a disk of cork c to prevent any heat from being conducted to plate P where the cold air enters. The openings Z are cut through this nonconducting medium.
By this construction all parts of the apparatus with which the Huid comes in contact are prevented from becoming hot.
I claiml. The combination of chamber D and tubes I I and T with the nonconducting medium C c above plate P; the arrangement being substantially as described.
2. I also claim the manner of moving the wick within the tube T in combination with the construction above described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses. v
Vclaas. wM. RICHTER, sn.
