SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,684, dated September 28, 1880.

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. CLAPP, of Ripon, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts in a desk attachment for trunks, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the upper portion. Fig. 3 is a top view of a portion of the desk attachment, and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of the same.

A represents the body, and B the lid, of a trunk of any suitable description. 0 is a tray arranged to rest in the upper part of the trunk upon cleats provided for the purpose in the usual manner. 1) is a desk, which is connected to the tray 0 by bars E E and G- at each end. The bars E E are straight, and each in one piece, and the bar G is'jointed, being composed of two pieces pivoted together at their inner ends. The bars E E have their lower ends pivoted to the end of the tray 0, and their upper ends pivoted to the end of the desk D. The bar G is pivoted at its upper end to the desk D and at its lower end to the forward one of the bars E E. When the desk is not in use the bars lie in the position shown in Fig. 2, with the desk lying close against the top of the tray and forming a cover for the same, being provided with a hook for holding it in place. When the desk is to he used itis raised to the position shown in Fig. 1. The bars E E then become upright and serve as legs for the desk, and the bars G become straightened out, the joint bei n g so constructed as to prevent them from going beyond straight, and serve as diagonal braces for supporting the front portion of the desk, which projects forward beyond the front of the trunk, enabling the person using it to sit close up to its front edge. They also prevent the desk from being drawn farther forward or pushed backward, rendering the desk stable.

The desk and tray may be lifted from the trunk when the desk is either raised or lowered.

As here shown, the tray is provided with a compartment at one end; but if preferred the desk may occupy the en tire length and width of the tray.

The deskis prevented from tipping forward and downward when in use by means of lugs or pins h projecting from the rear corners of the tray and engaging with books i at the rear corners of the inner top edge of the trunk. The lugs or pins It also serve as pivots, resting upon which the tray may be turned up into the lid B in the usual manner.

The desk is here shown as provided with a hinged lid, K, covering a space in which stationery or other articles may be kept. It is also provided with a compartment. L, for holding an inkstand, M, pen-wiper, P, and. pens, pen-holders, or other articles, said compartment having a hinged. lid, it, furnished with a button, 8, for holding it dowii. The inkstand M and penwviper P rest' upon springs T, so that when the lid it is closed they are held firmly in place. The springs T also serve to raise the inkstand M and pen-wiper P to a convenient height when in use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the desk D and tray 0, of the bars E E and G, substantially as described, whereby the desk is made to rise level until it reaches its proper height for use, and to project forward beyond the front of the trunk, as set forth.

.2. The combination, with the desk D, hinged lid R, and inkstand M, of the spring '1, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
