AUTOMATIC FAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,207, dated November 9, 1880.

Application filed July 8, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I, JOHN W. SooT'r, of Seattie, in the county of King and Territory of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved automatic fan, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in automatic fans which, amon gother purposes, are designed for use in the sick room,the dining-room, in the bed-room, in the drawingroom, the sewing circle, for attachment to childrens cradles and the backs of seats in churches and halls, and to the writing-desk; and itconsists of a fan adapted to be adj ustably and angularly attached to a staff operated by vibrating mechanism, and also adapted to be contracted and expanded to vary the blast, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the fan-shaft, with its inner end connected to and driven by suitable mechanism inclosed in a box, B, having a bracket or other suitable means for securing in position against a support.

vanes are also connected, with its lower end provided with a series of holes, at d, to permit of the raising or lowering of the fan. An adjusting pin or screw, d, unites with the holes or perforations d to effect the vertical adjustment of the fan.

D D are cords or other suitable medium, connected at different points on the fan on each side of its staff. and all converging and connected to a push-pin, 0, moving upon and entering the staff. The object of this arrangement is to permit of the fan being expanded and contracted to vary the blast.

E is a segment or arch centrally attached to the shaft A, and provided with perforations f and a set-screw,f, by which the fan may be adjusted at the desired angle to accommodate the position of the person.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States An automatic fan composed of the fan with its vanes connected adj ustably to its staff and adjusted to the operating-shaft, with a perfo rated segment having a set-screw, and the box containing the fan-shaft-operatin g mechanism, and having a bracket or other suitable means for securing it in position to a support, as set forth In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
