1 Claim. (01. 306-13) This inventionrelates to scythes of a generally similar nature to that constituting the subject matter of my United States Patent No. 2,324,239,
issued July 13, 1943, upon which the. present device constitutes an improvement.
An important object of the present invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a scythe of the character described which embodies unique means for rigidly securing the blade in adjusted position on the snath.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a scythe of the character set forth comprising coacting means of a novel construction on the snath and blade-attaching means for positively preventing rotation of said blade on said snath.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a scythe which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of theinvention will become apparent from a study of the following specificatransverse bar 4. A pivoted clamp 5 on the bar 4 is cooperable therewith for securing the rear endof the plate 3 on the snath I. At an intermediate point the plate 3 is formed to provide a raised, fiat arcuate portion 6 having elongated openings I therein.
At its forward end, the plate 3 has formed integrally therewith a transverse bar 9 having a recess I0 therein which accommodates the snath I. The bar 9 is further provided with. openings II in its end. portions. The openings II are for the reception of the legs I2 of a U bolt I3 having mounted thereon a clamp. I4 which is cooperable with the bar 9 for securing the forward end of Figure 6 is a perspective view of the forward I cumferential grooves or channels 2.
Mounted longitudinally on the forward end portion of the snath I is an elongated metallic plate 3 of arcuate cross section. At its rear end, the plate 3 has formed integrally therewith a the plate 3 to the snath I. Nuts I5 are threaded 0n the U bolt I3 for securing the clamp I I on the snath I. As illustrated to advantage in Figure 4 of the drawings, the U bolt I3 straddles the snath I and the legs I2 of said U bolt are engaged in the grooves or channels 2 of said snath. Thus, the assemblyis positively secured against both longitudinal and rotary movement on the snath I.
The U bolt I3 also constitutes means for clamping the tang I8 of a blade I! on the bar 9. The
tang I6 terminates in an angularly bent end portion or lug I8 which is engageable selectively in the openings 1 for adjusting the angle of the blade I1 relative to the snath I. The U bolt I3 still further constitutes means for securing an abutment I9 in position on one end portion of the bar 9 for engagement with the heel portion of the blade H for assisting in retaining said blade in adjusted position. I The abutment formed in one end portion thereof an opening 20 which accommodates one of the legs I2 ofthe U bolt I3. -Thus, the abutment I9 may. swing on the U bolt, whensaid U bolt is loose, for adjusting itself to the angle of the tang I6.
In use, the U bolt I3 firmly secures the blade I! in adjusted position with the assistance of the element I9. To adjust the angle of the blade I! on the snath I, the U bolt I3 is loosened. to permit the lug I8 to be engaged in the desired opening I. When this is done the abutment I9" adjusts itself on the U bolt I3 for proper engagement with the blade. has been made, the U bolt is again tightened.
It is believed that the many advantages of a scythe constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
