It will be notecl that the cloth plate I! of the sewing machine I is cut awayat one side to permit the female cutter which is disposed rearwardly of the needle to come close to the stitch line of the needle and that the front vend of the female cutter lies flush with said cloth plate. It will be noted that by partially unscrewing" the bolts 43, it is possible to slide the pinking and to the pinking mechanism through a suitable folder indicated as a wholeby the reference 65, shown in Figures 6 and '7. p
The folder 65 includes an attaching plate 66 which is adjustably secured to the base plate H by means of a screw 61. 68 and an outside folding plate 69 are secured to the plate 66 such as by soldering to. an upwardly attachment longitudinally and thus vary the distance between the stitch line formed by the needle [6 and the ornamented edge of the fabric formed by the pinking or cutting members 35 and 31. As shown in Figure 2, the pinking or cutting members 35 and 3! are always disposed so as to cut-in a plane transverse to the line of feed or stitch line formed by the needle l6.

. The transverse shaft 55 is geared to rotate at a lower number of revolutions than the shaft I4. The shaft .55 has an eccentric portion forming the bearing pin 5| on which the upper end of the link 55 is mounted. "It will thus be noted that the link 56 being in engagement with the pivotally mounted lever 29 will, cause thelever to swing up and downiabout the bearing pin 30, solely due to the motionof the main shaft I4, and during operation, the cutting mechanism will come into pinking engagement a lesser number of times than the number of stitches formed by the needle l6.
It is to be noted that the link 55 has a left male cutting member and shields the fabric section 62 from being dragged under the male hand thread at its upper end and a right hand thread at its lower end. The oppositely directed threads make it possible, by rotating the member 50, to lengthen or shorten the distance between the centers of the bearing pin 5| and the ball junction 45, and thereby provide for raising and lowering the male cutting member 35 and adjusting it after being ground for wear. U As shown. in Figures 2 to 4, inclusive, I have provided a stripper plate 56 which is mounted in slightly spacedrelation above the female cutting member -3'|and has an inclined wall 51 in alinement with the front side of the V-shaped opening 38. The stripper plate 56 is fastened to the base plate ll'and serves to strip the fabric 4 workedupon-from the cutting member 35.
The inclined wall 51 has a substantial height. When'making an edge-folded and topstitched seam, one fabric section rides on the wall 5! to a suflicient height so as topass easily over the top'of the cutting member 35.
Figure 5 shows an edge-folded and topstitched seam 69 comprising two sections of fabric 6| and 62 seamed together with a single row of topstitching 63 and having a pinked edge 64. The top section of fabric 62 has its edge folded and the twosections 6| and 62 are fed to the needle so as to cause the male cutting member to cut on' bent extension 14. H The plate 68 is bent downwardly and inwardly and forms a rolled edge 10 about which the upper fabric section 62 folds.
Extending substantially parallel to the rolled edge 10 of the inside folding plate 68 is a fabric separatingiplate H which forms part of the outside folding plate 69. I
The folding plates 68 and 69 converge as they approach the needle l6. The end 12 of the plate 68 extendsvunder the presser-foot, 2| which is undercut at 13 (Figures 1, 6 and 7) to permitthe end 12 to come close to the needle.
