NTTED STATES PATENT Ormea.
GEORGE T. ADLINGTON AND JOHN N. WEBSTER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
HAND-STAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 236,404, dated January 11, 1881. Application led March 15, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE T. ADLING- TON and JOHN N. WEBSTER, both of Peoria, in the county of Peoria', in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Cauceling-Stam ps; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this speciioation, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in Which- Figure l is a longitudinal View, partly in section, of a hand-stamp having` our improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view Of the cap, the rollers being removed to show the dam and inking-bed of the inking-roller.
Theiinvention relates to hand-stamps for marking or canceling` in which are combined a reservoir for the ink, an inking-roller, and a roller with a marking or canceling surface.
1n our improved construction the receptacle for ink is within the handle ot' the implement, which is provided with a screw-cap containing a. perforated dam and a socket or inking-bed for theinking-roller, and holds the arms bearing the spindle of the nmrking-roller. The socket conforms to one-half of the inking-roller turning or rot-ating therein, said roller being also in contactivith the marking-roller, so that the ink is readily transmitted to the latter roller for continuous marking or canceling. For printing dates the said marking-roller may be provided with removable strips or blocks having thereon the required letters and hgures.
In the drawings referred to, A designates the handle of the implement., and A the inkreservoir.
b is a thread at the end of the handle, on which is screwed the cap B, as shown.
G indicates a dam extending across the interiorof the cap B,said dam being' pertbrated With one or more passages, a., to allow the ink to pass from the reservoir to the hiking-roller D revolvingon the spindle t'. As shown, arecess or socket is formed Within the ca-p B, conforming to one-halt' of the roller D therein, so that the ink passing through the passages a to the surface'of said roller becomes equally distributed thereon.
Edesignates the markingor canceling roller, mounted on a spindle,f, within the arms or bearings d projecting from the cap B, the said roller being held in contact with the inkingroller D, as shown.
The roller D may be made of' any suitable material, is preferably faced with rubber, and its surface may be ridged with lines orother suitable design for marking or canceling. Said roller may also be provided With removable blocks g, adjustable in dovetailed recesses in the surface of the roller7 and having letters and figures for marking dates. By these means a continuous marking and dating on a row of stamps is eli'ected.
The cap B, holding rollers D and E, the dam lC, and socket,is readily removable by unscreW- ing it. from the handle for the purpose of illing the reservoir, after which the cap is again screwed in place. The ink is confined in the reservoir by the dam C, except Where it is admitted through the passages afto the roller D, over which it is equally spread by means of the contact of the semicireular inking-bed or socket with the inking-roller. The cancelingroller E, being in contact with roller D, receives the ink therefrom, and being rolled over a number of stamps will cancel and date the whole.
For the purpose ot' dating the same date and the stamped letters should then be so arranged as to space that the 4date strikes each at the proper point.
I/Ve claimt 1. In a marking or canceling stamp, the reservoir provided with a screw-cap having the perforated dam O and'a semicircular socket for the inkingroller, in combination with the said roller, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The marking-stamp having the handle forming an ink-reservoir, and provided with the screw-cap B, containing the perforated dam C, and forming' also a socket tor the roller D, as shown, in combination with rollers D and E, constructed and arranged as herein set forth.
ln testimony that `we claim the foregoing stamp-canceler We have hereunto setfur hands this 9th day of March, 1580.
