This invention relates to printing devices and more particularly to the kind that embody a frame or carrier on which one or more printing members are releasably retained as Well as, in most instances, an index card that is adapted to bear an impression from at least selected of the type characters on a printing member included in the device.
Printing devices ol the character to which this invention pertains as constructed heretofore have included a carrier embodying retaining devices for securing at least one printing member, such as an embossable printing plate, against movement in one direction on the carrier,'and such retaining devices have been arranged to extend over certain of the marginal portions on the printing member. Such a carrier has also included at least one depressible portion engageable With an end of the printing member along an edge thereof other `than that adapted for cooperation with the retaining devices disposed to overlie marginal portions of the printing member and such a depressible portion has been so arranged on the carrier that when depressed out of engagement with the end of the printing member with which it is to cooperate, th-e printing member could be slid thereover to thereby be removed from the retaining devices on the carrier adapted for cooperation rwith marginal edges of the printing member as aforesaid. Such a depressible portion is also depressed when a printing member is to be slid into position to be retained by retaining devices of the aforesaid character, the depressible portion being so arranged as to spring up intoretaining position oncethe printing member is in its proper and nal position on the carrier. Those depressible portions of the aforesaid nature that have been provided on certain styles of printing device carriers as heretofore made have sometimes been so improperly operated that the retaining function thereof was impaired or, in the alternative, such depressible portions have been so deformed that they exerted an objectionable upward pressure on the printing members adapted to be retained thereby and other objectionable conditions have sometimes been encountered in the course ofv use of printing device carriers embodying such depressible portions.
Furthermore, in those instances Where the printing member or members adapted to be retained on a printing device carrier are in the form of embossable printing plates and when the type characters are embossed on such plates there is a tendency for such plates to stretch or elongate and the extent'to which such plates so elongated is more or less directly proportionate to the number of type characters embossed on a particular plate. Thus, since more type characters may be embossed on one such plate than may be embossed on another such plate, it has been necessary to so arrange those retaining means on printing devcevcarriers, that are adapted for cooperation with marginal portions or edges on the plate, as to enable reception therein of a printing plate which has been embossed to receive` the maximum number of type characters that may be embossed thereon so as to thereby enable accommodation of the maximum stretching or elongation that might arise by reason of the embossing of a maximum number of type characters on a printing plate. Therefore Where far less than the maximum number of type characters have been embossed on a printing plate, in which instance very little if any stretching or elongation of the plate is effected, there have been instances where such a` plate was not held against objectionable movement on the carrier by reason of the clearance between the marginal edges or ends of the plate and the retaining means adapted for cooperation therewith aii'orded on the frame, for under such circumstances the plate was not stretched or elongated sufiiciently to take up the clearance, allocated to accommodate maximum stretching or elongation of the plate. The foregoing has been particularly noticeable With respectto those retaining means, and particularly depressible portions of the aforesaid character, that have heretofore been provided on printing device carriers in position to cooperate with marginal ends of substantially rectangular printing plates.
Therefore, in View of the foregoing and other kindred conditions that have sometimes been encountered heretofore in the use of printing devices of the nature to which this invention pertains, it is among the objects of this invention to retain a printing member, such as an embossable printing plate, on a printing device carrier in such a manner that the printing member Will be effectively held against undesired movement on the carrier, and a related object is to enable this to be accomplished irrespective of whether or not the dimensions of the printing member, as an embossable printing plate, precisely correspond to some particular standard so as to thereby enable eiective retention of a printing member, as an embossable printing plate, on the carrier therefor irrespective of the number of type characters that may have been embossed thereon or other for cooperation with such formed portion in such a position on the carrier that, when such portions are brought into cooperating relation, the printing member vwill be held against undesired movement on the carrier in at least a selected direction; to so relate a retaining means on a printing device carrier and a portion on a printing member adapted for cooperation therewith that the printing member will be held against ,undef sired movement on the carrier in angularly related directions; and to so arrange such related portions on a printing member and a carrier therefor that the portion afforded on the printing member may be located intermediate the ends thereof.
Furthermore, it has been customary heretofore to so arrange the carriers of printing devices that printing members, such as substantiallyvrectangular embossable printing plates adapted to be retained thereon were moved into proper and inal position on the carriers by being slid over the face of the carriers on which the printing members were to be retained, and usually this has been done by sliding the printing members onto the carriers from selected edges of the carriers. In any event it has been customary to effect some relative sliding movement between the printing members and the carriers in order to dispose the printing members in proper and nal position on the carriers and such movement, in the case of substantially rectangular printing members, has been ratherA substantial and in the direction of the greatest dimension of'the rectangular members. "o f v Hence, yet other important objects of the present invention are to so relate printing device carriers and the printing members adapted to be retained thereon that the printing members may be disposed in proper and final position on the carriers by effecting but relatively short relative. movement between the carriers and the printing members; to utilize novel intertting portions on the carriers and printing members that are so arranged that proper and final interfltting thereof may be expeditiously effected; and'to enable printing members that are substantially rectangular in outline to be disposed in final and proper position on the carriers therefor by effecting relative movement between the members and the carriers in the direction of the shorter of the dimensions of the members.
Other and more specific objects of the present invention are to relate retaining means on a printing device carrier or frame and openings in a printing member in such a way as to enable intertting thereof and thereby secure the printing member to the carrier; to so form retaining means on a printing device carrier that marginal portions on a printing member, located adjacent to openings afforded Yin the printing member, may be fitted thereunder; and to so relate retaining means of the aforesaid character with other retaining means on the carrier and a printing member adapted to be retained by such means that the printing member may be position as to enable cooperation thereof with al marginal portion of a printing member adapted to be retained on the carrier; to form a portion on the printing member in such position that Awhen such portion and the just-mentioned retaining device on the carrier are brought into cooperative relation the printing member will be secured against undesired movement on the carrier; to locate the portion on the printing member along a marginal edge thereof; to locate such a portion in such an edge intermediate the ends of such edge; to utilize such portions on a printing member and a carrier therefor to prevent undesired movement of the member on the carrier in angularly related directions; and to so and formed portion on the printing member as to insure retention ofthe printing member in aY predetermined position on the carrier; and to so arrange the retaining means ron the carrier adapted for cooperation with the formed portion on the member as to enable depression of such retaining means and thereby enable insertion of the printing member into, or removal of the printing member from, the carrier therefor.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent fromrthe followingr 'description and claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which, by way of illustration, shows a preferred embodiment andthe principle thereof and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principle may be used and structural Ichanges may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview ofthe appended claims.

The printing device illustrated in the accompanying drawing is generally of the character to which, for example, Gollwitzer Patent No. 2,030,865, patented February 18, 1936, pertains, but it is to be understood that this is merely eX- emplary of printing devices of the character in which my invention may be embodied. Furthermore, while I have shown but a single printing member or plate as being included in the p-rinting device, it is to be understood that my invention is susceptible for use in those instances where a plurality of printing plates are retained on the carrier of the printing device, an arrangement of this character being shown, for example, inthe patent to Hubbard No. 1,682,519, patented August 28, 1928, which patent it will be understood is merely illustrative of a wide variety of printing devices of the character in which the present invention may be embodied.
The printing device as illustrated in the accompanying drawing includes a frame or carrier `F on which a printing member or plate P and an index card C are releasably retained. The card C is retained on the frame or carrier F by properly located suitable retaining devices I0 struck up onto one face of the frame F at proper positions and a bead UB formed on the frameand cooperating with one marginal edge of the card. It is tobe understood, however, that this is merely typcal of the manner in which an index card as C may Ibe retained on a frame as F and it is also to be understood that my invention may .be embodied in a printing device irrespective of whether or not the device includes an index card as C. However, since type characters as T are usually embossed to appear in relief on one face of a printing plate as P and since such type characters usually appear in reverse order, it is advantageous to include an index card as C in the printing device since an impression made from at least selected of the type characters T onto such a card may be expeditiously read and this facilitates use of the printing device particularly in the iiling thereof and the copying of data therefrom.
Moreover, the printing device may embody indexing means as the tab TB which, as illustrated, includes a stem I I adapted to be inserted into retaining devices as I2 afforded on the frame or carrier F. The particular arrangement of the tab TB and the retaining devices I 2 shown in the accompanying drawing is of the character to which Gollwitzer Patent No, 2,049,436, patented August 4, 1936, pertains but it will be understood that resort might be had to other arrangements for affording indexing and classifying means on a printing device of the character to which this invention pertains primarily since the present invention is not directly related to such an arrangement on the carrier.

of the frame F opposite that along which the bead UB is formed and, as. best shown in the sectional views, Figs. 4 to 7, inclusive, this bead is formed by folding a marginal portion of the material from which the frame F is made over onto the face of the frame on which the printing plate P is to be received, the arrangement being such that a free marginal portion of the material so folded over onto the face of the frame is arranged to extend in substantially parallel but spaced apart relation with the face of the frame onto which the material is so folded. It will be understood, however, that other means adaptedfor cooperation with a marginal edge of a printing member as the printing plate P that is to be disposed adjacent'thereto may be provided without departing from the purview of my invention, it only being necessary, as will be explained hereinafter, that whatever means is provided at the position of the bead LB on the frame as F be of such nature that a portion of the printing member as the -plate P may be slid thereinto, for example, in the manner that is explained hereinafter with reference to the manner in which the plate P is mounted on the frame F.
My invention primarily has to do with the man,- ner in which the printing member, as the embossable printing plate P, is to be retained on a carrier therefor, as the frame F, Thus, in accordance with my invention one or more slots as S is or are afforded in one margin of the printing member as the plate P. In those instances where the printing member as the plate P is substantially rectangular in outline the slot or slots as S is or are desirably provided along one of the longer edges of the member. When a plurality of slots as S are formed .along a margin of a printing member, it is advantageous to locate the slots intermediate the opposite ends of such margin of the member and the medial portion thereof as, for example, in the positions of the slots S, Fig. 3'. The printing plate P shown in the accompanying drawing is of the character to which the copending application of Carl J. Hueber and William J. Hampton, Serial No. 450,318, filed July 9, 1942, pertains and while my invention mayv be advantageously incorporated in a plate of this character it is to be understood that my in-A vention may be incorporated into other printing plates, for example, one of the character-to which Gollwitzer Patent No. 1,955,803, patentedrApril 24,

When, however, the printing plate as P is formed in accordance with the aforesaid copen'ding Hueber and Hampton application, the slots as S are desirably formed in a flange as I3 that is afforded along a marginal edge of a plate as Pv plate as P. The slots as S are desirably formed in a ange as I3 for so to do enables the retaining devices that are provided on the carrier, as the frame F, and which are adapted to cooperate with slots as S to be arranged to closely overlie such a ange whereby the exposed faces of such retaining means may be disposed to lie below, or at least so as not to4 project objectionably above,

In the present instance the retaining devices that are to cooperate with the slots as S are afforded by clips I4 thatY are struck up from the material from which the frame as F is formed. As best shown in the sectional views, Figs. 5,` 6 and 7, retaining means or devices as the clips I4 embody portions which are joined to but which extend in substantially right angular relation with the body of the frame as F and such portions terminate in portions I4 which extend in substantially parallel but spaced apart relation With the adjacent face of the frame. The facesof the portions I4 of the clips I4 disposed toward the .adjacent face of the frame are spaced from such adjacent face of the frame in an amount sufziicient to enable that portion of a printing member as the plate P in which slots as S are formed ;to be tted beneath the adjacent faces of the lclips as I4 and the frame as F, and desirably the :arrangement is such that the clips as I4 neatly fit over such portions of the plate as P and closely overlie the same so as to thereby prevent undesired relative separating movement between the plate and the frame.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the bead LB is adapted for cooperation with a ange as I on the plate as P, which flange likethe ange I3 is formed along a marginal edge of the plate as P, and in this instance the flanges I3and I5 `are formed along opposite marginal'edges of the plate as P, the flange I5, like the flange. I3, desirably being formed inV accordance with the disclosure of the aforesaid copending Hueber and Hampton application. Thus, the flange I5 includes a face that 4desirably is disposed to lie at least substantially flush with one face of the printing plate as P while the other face thereof is arranged to lie below the opposite face of the plate as P. Yet further, those faces of the flanges as I3 and I5 that are to be at least substantially flush with a face of the plate as P are desirably arranged to -be at least substantially flush with thesame face of the plate as P. When the printing plate as P includes a flange as I5, the bead as LB may be arranged so as not to project objectionably above the printing face of the plate Y as P on which type characters as TY are to be embossed to appear in relief and thereby the likelihoodY that impressions will be made from the exposed face of a bead as LB or other retaining means adapted for cooperation with the portion of the plate as P with which the bead LB is to cooperate will be avoided. p v
When a plate as P is to be mounted on a carrier as F, that edge of the plate as P opposite that along which the slots as S are formed is passed into the retaining means for such edge of the plate afforded on the frame, this being the .bead LB in the illustrated form of the invention. Such edge of the plate is initially juxtaposed to, or but slightly inserted into, the retaining means therefor and the plate as P is located on the frame as F so as to dispose the slots as S in alignment with the retaining means therefor as the clips I4. t will therefore be seen that the particular location of Vthe retaining means as theclips as I4VV avon the carrier or frame as F is determined by the e 8 location of the Yslots as S in the printing plate that is to be retained on the frame` and the position in which it is desired to retain the printing Y member as kthe plate P on the frame or carrier. Thus, in the present instance, where it is desired to retain the printing plate P in such position on the frame or carrier F that the shorter edges of the substantially rectangular plate Will be spaced inwardly from the shorter edges of the substantially rectangular frame as F, the clips as I4'are located inwardly of the shorter edges of the frame as F and in position such that they may pass through the slots as S when the plate as P is arranged in its desired longitudinal position on the frame as F.
The aforesaidinitial position of the plate P in the course of the mounting thereof on the frame as F is illustrated in Fig. 6 and once the slots as S have been aligned with the retaining devices as the clips I4 the plate and frame are moved relative to each other so as to thereby cause the retaining devices as the clips I4 to pass through the slots as S, the plate is engaged with the adjacent face of the frame, such relative positions of the plate P and frame F being illustrated in Fig. 7. Once the plate and frame have been Vengaged in this manner, the plate is slid transversely across the face of the frame so as to cause that portion of the plate, that is to be received in the retaining device as the bead LB, to be disposed in nal position in such retaining device. Such relative movement of the plate and frame also brings the rails dei-med between the adjacent edge of the plate as P and the slots as S into position beneath the portion I4 of the retaining devices as the clips I4, Wherefore the plate and frame are effectively held against relative separating movement.
It has been observed that, when type characters Vas T are embossed on a printing plate as P, such plate is stretched and inV those instances Where the plate is substantially rectangular in outline it has been observed that the plate elongates in the direction of its greatest dimension, particularly when the type characters are embossed in side-by-side relation on the plate in the direction of its longest dimension.

HOW- ever, irrespective of the number of type characters that are embossed on a plate as P and consequently irrespective of the extent of elongation of the plate as P as a result of such embossing operations, it is desirable that the plate be retained in a predetermined position on the frame as/F and that it be effectively held against movement longitudinally. Moreover, since one printing plate as P may be removed from a'frame Vor carrier as F- and another printing plate may be substituted thereforY and since one such printing plate may have far more type characters embossed thereon and thereby be subject to far more elongation than the other, it is desirable that the length of the slots as S relative to the length of the retaining devices as the clips I4 be such that ample clearance is provided about the clips as I4 once they are disposed in the slots as S for so to do facilitates mounting of the plate as P on a frame Yas F and insures against binding of the ends ofthe slots as S on the clips as I4. Such relative arrangement of the slotsY as S and the retaining devices as I4 Would enable longitudinal movement vof the plate as P on the frame as F, and in order to insure that the plate as P will be More-l.. over, the degree of such elongation is more or held against such undesired longitudinal movement on the frame as F and in a predetermined position on the frame an arrangement 'is provided for securing .the plate on the frame against such longitudinal movement and in such desired predetermined position. Moreover, in the present instance, the means effective to prevent such undesired longitudinal movement of the plate are also effective to prevent transverse movement thereof on the frame.
Hence, in the present instance, a notch as N is formed in the plate as P in the edge thereof along which the slots as S are formed and desirably the notch as vN is located intermediate slots as S. Thus, in the present form of the invention rthe notch N is located substantially medially in the aforesaid edge of the plate P. Moreover, a depressible tongue I6 is formed in the frame or carrier F in position to cooperate with the notch as N when the plate as P is in proper position on the frame as F. Thus Where the notch as N is located medially in the aforesaid edge of the plate as P and the plate is to be held on the frame as F with the ends thereof substantially equidistantly spaced from the respective adjacent edges of the frame as F, the tongue as I6 is located substantially medially on the frame F between the edges of the frame from which the aforesaid edges of the plate as P are to be equidistantly spaced. Desirably, the tongue as I6 is formed by cutting a substantially horseshoeshaped slot I1 in the material of the frame as F and that portion of the tongue as I6 lying at the bight of the substantially horseshoe-shaped slot I'I is formed to extend upwardly above the face of the frame on which the plate as P is to be disposed so as to thereby afford an upstanding lip B at the free edge of the tongue I6. It is this upstanding lip as I8 that is adapted to fit into the notch as N and thereby prevent undesired longitudinal and transverse movement of the plate as P on the face of the frame as F.
The material of Which the frame F is formed is somewhat resilient, Wherefore the tongue I6 is resilient. Thus when the plate P is initially moved into engagement with the adjacent face of the frame as F, as shown in Fig. 7, the plate engages the lip I8 and depresses the tongue I6. However, as soon as the plate as P attains its nal position on the frame as F and when the notch as N is located in proper longitudinal position, by reason of the innate resiliency of the tongue as I6, the lip I8 springs up into the notch N and thereby firmly anchors the plate as P against longitudinal movement on the frame as F. Moreover, the notch as N is preferably such that when the lip passes into the notch as N, the face of the lip I8 disposed toward the plate as P seats in the bottom of the notch as N and thereupon the plate as P is held against transverse movement on the frame as F. Hence, engagement of the lip as I8 in a notch as N is effective to prevent undesired movement of the plate as P from the final and proper position on the frame and in which the plate `is shown in Figs. 1, 4 and 5.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that I have provided a printing device in which interconnection of a printing member and a frame or carrier therefor may be expeditiously effected with but very little relative movement between the printing member and the carrier. Morever, the relative movement that is to be effected todispose the printing member in nal position on the carrier therefor is effected transversely of the extent of the printing member, particularly when kit is in the form of a substantially rectangular embossable plate, but in any event relative movement is effected vertically as the printing device is viewed in Fig. l.
Furthermore, the arrangement is such that the intertting devices respectively included on the lprinting member or plate and the carrier or frame therefore are such that a neat lit is afforded therebetween, whereby relative separating movement between the plate and frame is effectively prevented, this primarily being assured by reason of the fact that the devices aiforded on the frame may be caused to overlie those parts on the printing plate which are adapted to be disposed therebelow. Yet further, when formed portions are provided along the edge of the printing member, as an embossable printing plate, whi-ch are of reduced thickness with respect to the portion of the plate whereat type characters are embossed thereon, the retaining devices adapted for cooperation with the plate and which are provided on the carrier and the frame are so arranged as to not objectionably project above the face of the printing member or plate on which type characters embossed thereon appear in relief and thereby the likelihood that impressions will be made from such retaining devices when impressions are being made from the type characters may be avoided.
Yet further my novel printing device is so arranged that undesired movement of the printing member on the carrier therefor is effectively prevented and in the present instance both longitudinal and transverse movements of the printing member on the carrier are prevented by the utilization of but a single arrangement to enable this to be accomplished.
Furthermore, the arrangement 'which is elfective to prevent undesired relative movement of the printing member on the face of the carrier therefor is such that it will be effective to accomplish this desired end irrespective of the degree of elongation orother alterations in the dimensions of the printing member with respect to some predetermined standard, the reason for this being that the arrangement is of such nature that the printing devices engage intermediate their ends rather than at the ends thereof.
Many other novel aspects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the foregoing description, and it is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that this is capable of variation and modification, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the purvieW of the following claims:
I claim:
l. A printing device including a carrier, a printing member adapted to bear type characters and having at least one opening formed therein adjacent a marginal edge thereof, retaining means for securing said printing member to said carrier and including means into which the marginal edge of said printing member opposite the edge thereof adjacent to which an opening is formed may be inserted and also a member formed to enable passage thereof through an opening in the printing member and embodying a part adapted to overlie a marginal portion of the printing memberv disposed adjacent to the opening when the aforesaid marginal edge is inserted into the means adapted to receive the same and subsequent to passage of Vsaid member thYOugh Said opening, and yieldable means adapted to engage said printing member after it is connected to said carrier by said retaining means and operative to prevent undesired relative movement between said printing member and carrier upon engagement of the yieldable member with said printing member.
2. A printing device including a carrier, a printing member adapted to bear type characters and having at least one slot formed therein adjacent a marginal edge thereof whereby a rail is defined intermediate said slot and the adjacent edge of the member, retaining means on said carrier and disposed to receive-a marginal edge of said printing member opposite the marginal edge adjacent to which said slot is formed, a member formed on said carrier and sized relative to said slot so as to enable free passage thereof through said slot and including a part adapted to overlie said rail when the marginal edge of said printing member is received in the retaining means therefor and subsequent to the passage of said part through said slot, and yieldable means adapted to engage said printing member after said rail is disposed beneath said member and operative to prevent undesiredV relative movement between said printing member and carrier upon engagement of the yieldable member with said printing member.
3. A printing device including a carrier, an embossable printing plate, and means for securing the plate on one face of the carrier and including retaining means adapted to overlie at least selected marginal portions of the plate, at least selected of the marginal portions of said plate that are adapted to be disposed under at least selected of said retaining means being of reduced thickness relative to that part of the plate -whereat it may be embossed, said plate having at least one opening therein in amarginal portion thereof that is-of reduced thickness, selected of the retaining means being disposed on said carrier in a position to pass through said opening and being formed to embody a part adapted to closely overlie the marginal portionof the plate that is of reduced thickness and which is disposed adjacent to the opening and when the marginal portions of the plate that are adapted to be disposed under retaining means are arranged under such retaining means, and yieldable means engageable with an edge of said plate and operative to prevent undesired relative movement between said plate and carrier -upon disposition of the marginal portion of reduced thickness beneath the retaining means adapted to overlie the same. f
4. A printing device including a carrier, an embossable printing plate, retaining meansengageable with one marginal portion of said plateto connect the same to the carrier, said plate having at least one slot formed in the marginal portion thereof opposite that engageable with said retaining means, a retaining member on the Vcarrier formed and disposed Yto enable free passage thereof through said slot and including a portion formed to overlie a portion of the plate adjacent said slot when the first-named marginal portion of said plate is disposed in the retaining means therefor whereby the plate and carrier are interconnected and held against relative separating movement, and means comprising a formed. portion on said plate and a cooperating locking element on said carrier for preventing undesired relative movement between said plate and carrier after interconnection thereof by said retaining member and said retaining means.
5. A printing device including a carrier, an embossable printing plate, retaining means engageable with one marginal portion of said plate to connect the same to the carrier, said plate having at least one slot formed in th'e marginal portion thereof opposite that engageable with said retaining means, a retaining member on the carrier formed and disposed to enable'fr'ee passage thereof through said slot and including a portion formed to overlie a portion of the plate adjacent said slot when the first-named marginal portion of said plate is disposed in the retaining means therefor whereby the plate andcarrier are interconnected and held against relative separating movement, said plate having a formed portion therein along the marginal portion thereof whereat a slot is formed, and yieldable means on said carrier engageable with' said formedportion to prevent undesired relative movement between said plate and carrier after interconnection of said plate and .carrier by said retaining member and said retaining means.
6. A printing device including a carrier, an embossable printing plate, retaining means engageable with one marginal portion of said plate to connect the same to the carrier, said plate having at least one slot formed in the marginal portion thereof opposite that engageable with said retaining means, a retaining member on the carrier formed and disposed to enable free passage thereof through said slot and including a portion formed to overlie a portion of the plate adjacent said slot when the first-named marginal portion of said plate is disposed in the retaining vmeans therefor whereby the plate and carrier are interconnected and held against relative separating movement, said plate h'aving a notch formed in the edge thereof along the marginal portion whereat a slot is formed, and yieldable means on the carrier and engageable in said notch when said plate and carrier are interconnectedby said retaining -means and said printing member and operable to prevent undesired relative movement between said plate and carrier. A printing device'including a carrier, an embossable printing plate, and means for securing the plate on one face of the carrier and including retaining means adapted to overlie atV least selected marginal portions of the plate, at least selected of the marginal portions of said plate that are adapted to be disposed under at least selected of said retaining means being of reduced thickness relative to that part of the plate whereat it may be embossed, said plate having at least one opening therein in a marginal portion thereof that is of reduced thickness, and selected of the retaining means being disposed on said carrier in a position to pass through said opening and being formed to embody a part adapted to closely overlie the marginal portion of the plate that is of reduced thickness and which is disposed adjacent to the opening and when the marginal portions of the plate that are adapted to be disposed under retaining means are arranged under suchV to be disposed under at least selected of ksuch re-f Y taining means being of reduced thickness relative to that part of the plate whereat it may be embossed, the selected of the retaining means being formed to closely overlie those marginal portions of the plate that are adapted to be disposed thereunder and which are of reduced thickness, said plate having a slot formed therein in one of the marginal portions that are of reduced thickness, and th'e retaining means that is adapted for cooperation with such portion of the plate being sized to enable free passage thereof through said slot whereby subsequent to the passage of such retaining means through the slot and the disposition of the marginal portions of the plate under the retaining means therefor, the retaining means that is passed through said slot may be caused to overlie a part of the portion of reduced thickness on the plate whereby the plate is connected to the carrier by said retaining means.
9. A printing device including a carrier, an embossable printing plate, and means for securing the plate on one face of the carrier and including retaining means adapted to overlie'opposite marginal portions of the plate, the opposite marginal portions of the plate that are adapted to underlie the retaining means for such opposite marginal portions of the plate being of reduced thickness relative to that part of the plate whereat it may be embossed, the retaining means adapted for cooperation with such portions of the plate being formed to closely overlie those marginal portions of the plate that are adapted to be disposed thereunder and which are of reduced thickness, said plate having a pair of slots formed therein in one of the marginal portions that are of reduced thickness, and the retaining means that are adapted for cooperation with such portion of the plate being sized and positioned to enable free passage thereof through said slot whereby subsequent to the passage of such retaining means through the slot and the disposition of the marginal portions of the plate under the retaining means therefor, the retaining means that are passed through said slots may be caused to overlie parts of the portion of reduced thickness on the plate whereby the plate is connected to the carrier by said retaining means.
10. A printing plate on which type characters may be embossed to appear in relief on one face and in intaglio on the opposite face thereof, and a flange along at least one marginal edge of said plate and which includes substantially parallel faces of which' one is disposed to be substantially 14 flush with one of the opposite faces of said plate while the other of such faces is disposed to lie for preventing undesired movement relative to av support, which means consists of a formed portion on the free edge of said flange disposed in predetermined relation with a slot formed in said flange.
11. A printing plate on which type characters may be embossed to appear in relief on one face and in intaglio on the opposite face thereof, and flanges along opposite edges of said plate that have corresponding faces thereof disposed to lie substantially flush with one face of said plate, other corresponding faces of the flanges being disposed to lie below the other of the opposite faces of said plate, at least one of said ilanges having at least one slot formed therein to thereby define a rail intermediate the free edge of said ange and said slot, said flange having a notch formed in the free edge thereof in predetermined spaced relation with a slot formed therein.
