SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,849, dated July 5, 1881.

Application led March 28, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD W. CHAM- BERS and THOMAS P. BURNETT, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Opera- Ohair,of which the following is a specification.

The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved chair for theaters, churches, halls, 85e., which can be folded very easily and compactly.

The invention consists in a chair in which the back is pivoted to the rear end of the seat, which is pivoted to two standards and to the arm-rests, which are pivoted to the tops of the standards, so that the back will move toward the standards and the arm-rests will be inclined downward, thus occupying very little space when the seat is raised.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of our improved chair, show ing the seat lowered. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing the seat in the same position. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line :o x, Fig. 1, showing the seat raised or folded.

The standards A A are provided with bases B B, which are trmly attached to the door, and the standards are connected by a transverse piece, C.

The seat D is attached to two arms, E E, pivoted to the standards A in such a manner that the pivot is at the rear quarter ot' the seat. The lower edge of the back F is pivoted to the rear end of the arms E of the seat, and is also (No model.)

pivoted to two levers, H, at the middle of its height, which levers are pivoted to the upper ends of the standards A, and have the armrests G attached to the end pivoted to the standards. The arm-rests project about equal distances over the front and rear of the standards.

The standards and frame of the chair can be made of wood or metal, and the seat and back 'can be covered with cane, perforated boards,

or may be upholstered.

If the seat D is raised, as indicated by the arrow a', the seat will be folded parallel with the standards A, and the back F will be moved toward the standards and in between the same. The levers H and the arm-rests G will be inclined downward from the standards. The chair can thus be folded to occupy very little space and will be found to be of great advantage in theaters, concert-halls. churches, Src.

Having vthus fully described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In an opera-chair, the combination, with the two standards A, having bases B, of the seat D, pi voted between said standards, and having rear projections, the back F, pivoted at the lower end to said seat-projections, and the levers or arms H, pivoted to the top of standards and to the back, as shown and described.
