Description

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
i HENRY B. AYER, OF NEW OBLEANS,ALOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMESM. HENNESSEY, OF SAME PLACE.
SH UTTER-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,128, dated October 11, 1881. vApplication fnea August 16,1ss1. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. AYER, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans, and in the State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind and Shutter Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' referencel marked thereon, making a part ot' this specification.
This invention relates to fasteners which are applicable to blinds, shutters,'and doors.
The nature ot' my invention consists in the combination, with a suitable frame or case, of an inside pivoted catch, a locking-bolt, apawl or dog and springs therefor, and a loosely pivoted outside catch, all so arranged and constructed that the inside catch for holding the shutter closed serves as a means for unf'astening the outside catch from its wall-loop, and said inside catch can be locked securely with or without a key, but cannot be unlocked without the proper key, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
The following is a description of my invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door, door-frame, and a portion of the outside wall of a building, showing my improvement applied to thedoor. Fig. 2 is a View showing the locking-bolt, pawl, and springs inside of the frame or case, the back plate ot which is removed. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the back plate. Fig. 4 is a detail of the pivoted ends ofthe two catches and part of the back plate ot' thecase.
Thefranle or case of the fastening is composed of a rectangular box, A, and a back plate, B. Inside ot' the case is a dog or pawl, (l, a spring, a, therefor, a locking-bolt, D, and a spring, b, therefor. A hole, c, is provided for the insertion ot' a key, a slot, d, for receiving the shank ot' the inside catch, E, and a slot, c, for the neck of a knob -or fingercatch, F. On opposite sides of the slotd, and protruding from the back plate, B, are two tlanges, f, to which are connected by pivots g g' the inside catch, E, and directly above it theloutside catch, G. This latterl catch, G,
extends through the shutter, and is designed for engaging with a wall-loop, h, and holding the shutter open. By raising the insidecat'ch,
E, the outside catch can be freed from its loop. This is effected by a toe, h', acting against a shoulder, t'. (Shown clearly in Fig. 4.) In other respects catch G is independent of the catch E.
The shank of catch E passes freely through the slots d and e, and has a loop, j, for the linger, and a hook, k,with abeveled nose, adapted to engage with the sill-piece H. (Partly shown in Fig. 1.)
The bolt D is pivoted to a post, l, and constructed with a right-angular notched nose, l', on one end, adapted to engage with the shank ot' catch E, as shown in Fig. 2, and safely lock this catch down.
The tapered end ofthe bolt D is designed to engage in a notch, m, made in the edge of the pawl C, in which position bolt D can only be moved by means of the proper keyinserted y through the key-hole c.
The pawl G is pivoted to a post, l2, in close relation tothe key-hole c, and to this pawlthe knob Fis attached, by means of which the pawl can be raised and the bolt caused to engage with and lock the catch E.
To unlock the bolt it is obvious that the key must be used, and when the bolt is held in an unlocked position to allow catch E to pla-y freely the tapered end ot' the bolt will be engaged behind 'a shoulder, r, near the tree end ofthe pawl, When theshutter is closed and the catch E is engaged with the sill-piece H, by simply raising slightly the knob F, the bolt D will lock the said catch, so that it cannot be released from the sill-piece except by the proper key. Ot' course the bolt can be locked orunlocked by means of' the key.
Having described my invention, Iclaim- 1. The combination, with the pivoted catch E, of the pivoted boltD and its spring b, pawl O, and its spring a., substantially in the manner and-for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the catch-case provided with a key-hole, c, and pivoted catch E, ot' the locking-bolt D, its spring, thespringacted pawl O and its notch m, shoulder r, and knob F, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of August, 1881.
