RESILIENT INSERT STRIP FOR DROP SEAT GARMENTS.

Filed June 23, 1947 Pig; l-
IN VEN TOR.
Patented Oct. 18, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RESILIEN T INSERT STRIP FOR DROP SEAT GARMENTS f 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a resilient insert strip for a drop seat garment.
This is a substitute application in place of my abandoned application filed on November 2, 1943, Serial No. 508,670.
More specifically, the invention proposes the provision of an eastic insert in the drop seat of childrens pajamas, underwear, or similar garments worn by children or adults which are held in a raised position by cooperative buttons and buttonholes, in a manner so that the elastic insert will take up all stresses and strains and prevent the buttons from being torn from the garment under these stresses and strains.
Still further, the invention proposes cutting away a portion of the drop seat and setting the elastic insert into this cutaway area in a manner so that the top and bottom edges of the elastic insert may be attached to the adjacent edges of the material of the drop seat outlining the cut away area.
A further object of this invention proposes the provision of a novel means for limiting stretching of the elastic insert, in a manner to prevent it from being excessively stretched destroying its elastic qualities.
It is a further object of this invention to manufacture a drop seat garment having an elastic insert in its drop seat which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth,
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a rear elevational view of a pair of childrens pajamas having a drop seat provided with a resilient insert according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a rear view similar to a portion of Fig. 1, but illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
' Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view of a portion of the drop seat.
The resilient insert strip for drop seat garments, according to this invention, is illustrated on the drawing applied to a pair of childrens pajamas I0 of conventional construction and having a drop seat I I. This is merely by way of i1- lustration, as the elastic insert may also be applied to childrens underwear or other similar garments adapted to be worn by children or adults. The top edge of the' drop seat II is formed with a plurality of'spa'ced button holes I2 engageable with complementary buttons I3 mounted upon the body of the pajamas I0 for holding the drop seat in its raised position.
A portion of the drop seat II has been cutaway at a point below the top edge thereof, and an insert of elastic material I 4 is set into this cut away area. The top and bottom edges of the elastic insert I 4 are secured to the adjacent edges of the drop seat by means of stitches I5.
Horizontal tapes I6 are extended along the attached adjacent edges of the elastic insert I4 and the drop seat I I. These tapes are secured in position by lines of stitches II. If desired the tapes I6 may be left off with merely the stitches I5 securing together the adjacent edges of the elastic insert I4 and the drop seat I I.
The feature of the construction resides in the fact that when the buttons I3 and the button holes I2 are engaged for holding the drop seat in its raised position, the elastic insert I4 will take up al1 stresses and strains, preventing these stresses and strains from tearing the buttons I3 from the body of the pajamas Ill.
In Figs. 3 and 4, a modification of the invention is illustrated in which a means is provided for limiting stretching of the elastic insert I4 so as to prevent the elastic insert from being excessively stretched destroying its elastic qualities.
This means includes spaced vertically arranged y tapes 20. Each tape 20 has its top edge securely attached to the top edge of the elastic insert I4 by means of the stitches l5. The free bottom end of each tape 2l) is formed with a plurality of vertically spaced snap fastener elements ZI. These snap fastener elements 2l are selectively engageable with a complementary snap fastener element 22 mounted in position upon the bottom edge of the elastic insert I4.
The snap fastener elements 2| and 22-permit the :bottom ends of the tapes 20 to be held in various slack conditions, limiting the distance the elastic insert I4 may stretch before the tape 20 becomes taut limiting further stretching of the elastic insert I4.
In Fig. 5 the elastic insert I4 is shown to be bound by an edge binding 24, stitched above and below the elastic insert I4 at 25, so as to permit a free transverse stretch of the elastic insert I4.
This binding edge 24 gives a nshed appearance to the drop seat.
It is to be understood that the strip i4 and their reinforcing stitches may be made resilient either in a vertical, horizontal or both directions and made of any suitable resilient material or of the material of the garment.`
They may extend to the upper edge of the drop seat. The elastic strip I4 may be incorporated above the seat portion of any garment other than the drop seat type and extend across the entire back of the garment or only a portion thereoft In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several Views.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modications coming Within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A drop seat for a garment having a horizontal insert of elastic` material set into the seat at a f tapes are attached and beneath the free end of each tape, and a line of vertically spaced complementary fastener elements mounted on the free end of each of said tapes and selectively engageable with the respective single fastener element for limiting the vertical stretching of the elastic insert.
