This invention relates to a drawer-like shelf for holding a recording tablet, recipe book or the like and has special reference to one forming an associate part of a kitchen cabinet, cupboard or the like upon which records, recipes or data may be most conveniently kept by the housewife, maid or attendant.

The principal object is to make such as readily available as possible and another object is sim plicity.

Still another object is to provide such an instrumentality that may readily be applied to a drawer space already supplied in some kitchen or pantry equipment.

The inconvenience of not having at hand proper equipment for jotting down notes, records or the like common to the housewife, chef, cook or butler is well known and to minimize such is a further object of the invention.

Referring to the drawing forming part of this application:

Fig. 1 is an isometric perspective view of the under face of one of the shelves embodying the invention and associated with a frame structure representative of that of a cabinet.

Fig. 2 is a fragmental central longitudinal sectional view of the hinge and shelf combination as it may appear in use.

Fig. 3 is a further enlarged sectional view of the hinge connection of the parts of the slidable shelf member.

In the drawing, the reference numerals l-Z represent the two-part board-like shelf or support hinged together as at 3-3 which when not in use may be housed within the compartment 4 as clearly seen in Fig. l of the drawing and thus form the bottom of said compartment.

In Fig. 2 the shelf is shown as drawn out and allowed to tip downwardly until assuming the position shown when performing its ultimate office and service as a support for the writing pad 5 or the like thereupon and in which position it is automatically held and braced by its own hinged and cooperatively united member 6 as predetermined.

At the forward end of the portion 1' of the shelf or drawer member is fixed the upstanding frontise piece 1 which may be of any design desired, but preferably to match the surrounding style, or if preferred may be dispensed with entirely and the tab or other indicia receiving means fixed in some convenient way to the shelf part I.

The hinge attaching the brace 6 to the portion 2 of the shelf is illustrated at 8 and which may be imbedded within the under face of the central front edge of the portion 2 of the shelf and in which event the brace 6 may be channeled or let into the bottom of the portion I. of the shelf its entire length, and the front end thereof may be loosely held in position as by a metal or other cross piece or cleat 9 fixed at its ends to the under face of the portion I of the shelf.

The brace 6 is preferably installed within a channel" in the major portion l as shown in the drawing, and the length of the channel is predetermined as is the length of the brace so that the end of the channel will act as a stop for the end of the brace as is seen in Fig. 2 when the shelf or major portion l is in inclined position. The brace being hinged to the minor portion 2 rearwardly of the hinged connection of the major and minor portions requires that the brace 6 be slidably held by the major portion l, the cleat 9 performing this function, as when the portion l is swung downwardly the hinged end of the brace 5 moves away from the portion l and the free end of the brace slides forwardly toward the end of the channel and is stopped thereagainst when the portion I reaches a predetermined angle from the portion 2, with the brace held at a slightly less angle to form an angular support for the portion I in its inclined position.

At iii-4!] are block-like stops fixed to the 0pposed rearmost under corners of the portion 2 of the shelf which limit the outer travel of the shelf at the proper predetermined time by contacting the two opposed similar stops ll-l l' fixed to the lowermost front corners of the side walls l2l2 forming the enclosure in which the shelf operates and clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be noted that the walls I Z are channeled as at l3 to permit of sliding engagement of the drawer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In combination with an open elongated chambered housing: a major and minor portioned reciprocable shelf within said housing, the outermost end of said major portion carrying an upstanding drawer-like frontal member, said minor portion being hingedly united to the innermost end of said major portion and reciprocal therewith, and an automatically operable bracing means hinged at one end to said minor portion and reciprocably carried within said major portion all so constructed and arranged that when said shelf is drawn outwardly from said housing for use said major portion will assume a downwardly inclined position, said means comprising a brace member hingedly carried at one end by said minor portion rearwardly of the hinged conpredetermined whereby the end of said channel 5 forms a stop for said brace to support said major portion in downwardly inclined position.

2. A major and minor two-part flat slidable bottom member for a compartment comprising,

a hinged connection at abutting ends of said parts 10 Number and an elongated automatic bracing member reciprocably carried by said major part and hinged to said minor part rearwardly of the hinged connection of said parts, and a stop on said major part against which the free end of said brace 15 1,493,996

abuts to support said major part when in ultimate extended inclined position, said brace being carried on the under side of said parts.
