Description

Feb. 21', 1950 J. DA VEIGA soAREs DROP CGUNTING GLOSURE FOR BOTTLES AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 6, 1948 I INVENTOR. Joan da'l eri g, s5owl'68 Patented Feb. 21, i950 DROP COUNTING CLOSURE FOR BOTTLES AND THE LIKE J 05.0 da Veiga Snares, Rio de J aneiro, Brazil Application December 6, 1948, Serial No. 3,836
3 Claims.
. This invention has reference generally to improvements in bottle closures and more particularly relates to a drop counting closure for bottles and the like.
As its primary aim and object the invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above character embodying an improved neck structure in combination with a novel closure element of rubber, the latter beingturnably mounted on the neck so that the discharge beak on the closure can be brought into registration with the lateral opening in the neck of the bottle so as to permit of the discharging of the contents of the bottle drop by drop through the opening in the beak, the closure being turnable to hermetically seal the opening in the neck to prevent the possibility of air entering the bottle when it is not in use and thereby preserving the contents of the bottle in its original condition.
Other objects as Well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a vertical side elevation of the rubber closure element,
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is a perspective detail of the upper part of the bottle showing the improved neck structure,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the bottle and its closure, the latter being shown in position corresponding to the showing in Figure 1 with the beak aligned with the opening and in the position ready to pour, and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view toward the beak of the bottle with the closure element shown in the position corresponding to Figure 2, the parts being in the same position as shown in Figure 4, that is, with the beak registering with the opening.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawingsthere is provided a container in the form of a bottle body I, the neck of which is provided with spaced annular ribs 2, 2, the outer being situated at the mouth of the bottle and the inner situated adjacent the juncture of the neck with the body leaving between a smooth annular surface which is provided with a transverse opening 3 situated medially of the ribs while turnably mounted on the neck is the improved closure element designated at 4 formed preferably of rubber.
The, improved closure element 4 includes a dome-like outer part and a neck portion 4 provided with enlarged grooved portions 2 2 on the inner surface located respectively at the outer end of the closure element andat the junctures of the neck structure 4 with the outer dome portion. These grooves are respectively arranged for engagement with the annular ribs 2, 2 on the bottle neck and when in the position shown in Figure 4 the body is capable of being turned on the neck portion so that the lateral extending discharge beak 3 can be removably arranged in registration with the opening 3. When in this position and the bottle partly inverted by exerting pressure on the dome-like portion which acts in the nature of a pump the contents of the bottle body may be dispensed drop by drop through the aligning opening 3 and the beak 3 After the discharging operation upon arranging the bottle in vertical position it is only necessary to turn the closure element so that the adjacent neck portion 4 of theclosure element will close the opening 3 so as to hermetically seal the contents of the bottle body and prevent the contamination thereof.
In order to insure of an accurate operation of the closure element the body of the container or bottle is provided with a marking 5 on the outer surface directly beneath the opening 3 in the neck so that one using the body need only align the beak with this marking to know that the parts are in a position for dispensing while likewise when the beak is moved out of alignment with the marking 5 to some extent one will be assured of the fact that the container is hermetically sealed.
It is to be noted that the neck portion 4 on the inner surface between the grooves 2 2 snugly fits the neck portion of the bottle body between the ribs 2, 2, and with the grooved portions snugly fitting the ribs an effective sealing of the bottle body is effected.
In sterilizing the bottle body it is only necessary to submerge the entire device in a sterilizing solution and operate the dome-like portion of the cover in the manner of a pump.
It is believed in view of the foregoing that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention are readily apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a closure of the character described the combination with the neck of a container provided with spaced annular ribs and with a transverse opening through the neck between the ribs of a resilient nipple-like closure, including an outer dome portion and a neck portion provided with internal grooves for telescopic engagement about the ribbed neck of the container body for snugly fitting the latter and capable of being turnable thereon, and an outlet beak extending laterally from the, closure neck for. alignment at times with the transverse opening inthe container neck so that on inverting of the container the dome-like outer portion of the closure element will act in the nature of a pump for dispensing the contents drop by drop; through, the opening when aligned with the beak while on turning the closure element the neck portion of the closure element adjacent the beak serves to close the opening.
2. A closure as claimed in claim 1 in whicha marking is applied on the outer surface of" the container body at a point directly beneath the transverse opening in-the neck so asto' indicate to the user-the fact that itis only necessary to turn the beak to align this marking to be assured of the fact that the closure is in the position for dispensing.
3. In a closure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the length of the neck portion of the closure element between the grooves corresponds to and snugly fits the neck of the container while the grooved portionsof the neck of, the closure also snugly engage the annular ribs on the neck of the container to hermetically seal the contents of the bottle when the beak or opening is out of alignment.
