1 claim.' (o1. 38e-'16) Thisyginvention relates cto.rarrsattachment.y der* signed for .use in connectiomwithxsteam-pressing machines, the primary object of the invention being to provide means whereby the excessive steam escaping around the head of the machine during the pressing operation, will be drawn away from the head to the end that the objectionable steam will be prevented from rising into the face of the operator.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be controlled by the lever which regulates the passage of steam into the pressing head, the operation of the Valve for controlling the removal of the steam being operated simultaneously with the `actuation of the valve which controls the passage of steam to the pressing head.
With the lforegoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a steam presser head, equipped with an attachment constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmental sectional view through a modied form of the invention.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View through the modied form of presser head.
Referring to the vdrawings in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the usual steam presser head of a conventional steam garment pressing machine now in common use, the head being formed Iwith discharge openings 6 through which steam entering the head, discharges therefrom, through the fabric covering 1 which is clamped in position, by means of the spring'clamp 8 shown as surrounding the head.
This head is hollow, as clearly shown by Figure 4 of the drawings, and is provided with an opening through which the steam supply pipe 9 extends, the steam supply pipe 9 communicating with the valve housing I0 into which the steam pipe II extends, which steam pipe II communi- Cates with a suitable source of steam supply not shown.
As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings, the valve housing I0 is elongated and rises an appreciable'l f distance` abovexthe uppervsurface :ofc:
the:headizz:` Operatingavithin1the.:fvalveahousings` IIJ, is a valve rod I2 which extends through the cap I3 that closes the upper end of the valve housing. The reference character I4 indicates a valve that is carried at the lower end of the valve rod l2 and is so designed that when it is in its normal or closed position, it lwill lie opposite to the pipes 9 and II to cut 0E the passage of steam into the steam presser head 5. Directly above the valve I4 is a valve I5, which is also secured to the Valve stem I2 to move therewith, the latter valve being so disposed that it falls opposite to the ends of the central vacuum pipes I6 that are shown as connected with the valve housing IIJ. The valve I5 is so arranged that it will open prior to the opening of the valve I4, so that suction through the pipes I BWill start prior to the opening of the valve I4.
The vacuum pipes I6 communicate with the vacuum pipes I'I and pipes I8 through the unions I9, the pipes I'I being connected with the pipes 2G through unions 2I. The reference character 22 indicates a pipe which communicates with the pipes IS and 20, at points in spaced relation with respect to each other, the pipe 22 being of a shape to conform to the general contour of the steam presser head. Pipe 22 is formed with openings 23 through which steam is Withdrawn from garments being pressed.
In the form of the invention as shown by Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, I have provided a jacket 24 which is of a shape to conform to the shapek of the conventional pres-ser head, so that it will fit snugly thereover, the side 25 of the jacket extending to points adjacent to the bottom -of vthe presser head, as clearly shown by Figure 4 of the drawings. The jacket has its lower edge open, providing a suction nozzle so that steam passing from the presser head 26 will be drawn through the chamber 24.
The reference character 21 indicates a valve chamber in which a valve operated by the lever 28 operates, the valve being so arranged that when it is moved downwardly, the pipes 29 leading into the valve 27 and establishing communication between the jacket 24 and pipe 30 are open through which steam is drawn in removing surplus steam around the head 26 of the presser.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided means for drawing the steam which otherwise passes around the presser head of a garment pressing machine, away from the presser head so that the person using thev machine will not be subjected to objectionable steam which usually passes upwardly into the face of the person pressing.
What is claimed is:
The combination with the steam presser head of a steam garment presser having a steam pipe through which steam passes t0 the presser head, and a suction pipe through which steam and air are drawn through the presser head, of a surplus steam removing device comprising a suction pipe secured around the marginal edge of the presser head, said pipe having a plurality of facing openings extending throughout the length thereof, the openings facing inwardly towards the bottom of the presser head, vacuum pipes connected with the suction pipe and being extended over the top of the presser head, a Valve chamber common to the steam pipe and vacuum pipes, a Valve stem operating in the valve chamber, valves on ther valve stem simultaneously controlling the passage of steam to the pressing head, and the suction through the suction pipe and vacuum pipes,
whereby steam escaping around the edge of the presser head will be drawn into the suction pipe and vacuum pipes exhausting said escaping steam at a point remote from the presser head.
