UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
THEODORE F. WESTERVELT, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, MICHIGAN.
SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 250,314, dated November 29, 1881. Application filed September 27, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. WESTER- VELT, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Isabella and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleighs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved sleigh, and Figs. 2 and 3 are details of the several parts.
The objectof my invention is to construct a sleigh in such manner that greater strength shall be secured to the several parts than is possible where the timbers are mortised, and at the same time repairs shall be easily and cheaply made.
The invention consists in a sleigh having sockets of peculiar construction for holding the timbers together, and braces combined with the sockets for supporting the cross-beams, as will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents a pair of runners, having the upright supports B secured thereto by means of sockets E, which are constructed with lateral flanges for holding the inner and outer sides of the runners, and which are secured to the runners by means of bolts and nuts. The upper portion of the socket E is provided with a rectangular seat for receiving the upright B, and upwardprojecting flanges having perforations, through which bolts are inserted to hold the upright securely to the socket. The inner flange of this socket extends upward nearly to the middle of the upright, from which point it inclines from the upright to which its socket is secured to a point near the middle of the cross-beam O, to which it is secured by a bolt, thus forming a brace. The surface of the inner flange, which is adjacent to the upright B, is provided with a rib, G, which is made to fit in a suitable groove in the upright, to assist in holding said parts together.
For securing the uprights B and the crossbea-ms 0 together, I provide a socket, D, the under side of which is provided with a seat for receiving the upper end of the upright B, and having two perforated flanges extending downward on opposite sides of the upright, to which they are secured by a bolt, and also having two flanges of similar construction extending upward on opposite sides of the beam 0, to which they are secured inlike manner.
The dash-board is to be attached to the forward ends of the runners by means of socketplates F, which fit cap-like over the ends of the runners, and are secured thereto by a cen tral screw, and which are provided with perforated flanges, by means of which the dashboardis secured to the runners.
With this construction, since the sockets, plates, and braces are designed to be cast of malleable metal, a sleigh may be cheaply and quickly made by simply sawing out the runners, uprights, and cross-beams, and boring holes for the bolts and putting the parts together. Besides, as no'mortises are made or required, the timbers retain their full strength, and when it becomes necessary to repair any portion of the frame-work, that portion may be easily detached and new timbers or irons substituted, as the case may be. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sleigh, the combination of the runners A, uprights B, and sockets E, having flanges which overlap the inner and outer surfaces of the runners, and seats in their upper portions for receiving the uprights, and provided with flanges, by which they are secured to the same, the inner flange being extended into a brace-rod, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a sleigh, the combination of the runners A, uprights B, sockets E, having their inner flanges provided with a rib, G, which fits into grooves in the uprights, and being extended into brace-rods, the cross-beams O and sockets I), having seats for the uprights, and perforated flanges, which are adapted to be secured to opposite sides of the said uprights and cross-beams, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a sleigh, the combination, with the runners A, of the socket-plates F, adapted to fit over the forward ends of the runners and to be secured thereto by means of a bolt, and having perforated flanges, by means of which a dash-boardshall be attached to the runners, substantially as shown and described.
THEODORE F. WESTERVELT.
