Sept. 12, 1950 J. AN DERSON GARMENT- HANGER Filed June 13, 1947 In vent/n" an MA! Moe/mam A m rneys Patented Sept. 12, 1950- UNIT- so STATE E T? C 2,522,013. new N E J ulian Anderson, Helena,
Application June 13, 1947, Serial No. 754,373
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an improved construction of garment hanger especially adapted for use in check rooms for providing means whereby all of the garments left by a customer may be retained together and supported by a single hanger.
It is the customary procedure in check rooms to provide checks, each containing two sections which are correspondingly numbered. The customer is given one check and the other check is ordinarily retained with the coat left by the customer and the hat, overshoes or other check items are stored separately. In returning the checked garments, the check room operator is required to rely upon the customer for identification of the hat, overshoes or other garments than the coat, which not only results in delay but which also frequently results in mistakes, so that customers fail to receive their hats or other garments, which are not retained with the coat.
Accordingly, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide an improved garment hanger which is so constructed that a coat and hat, overshoes or other garments may be checked together and supported by a single hanger to enable all checked garments to be quickly regained and without danger of loss.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing the improved garment hanger in use;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the improved garment hanger in its entirety is designated. generally 5 and is formed from a body member of any suitable material, such as metal, designated generally 6 and which includes an elongated portion having correspondingly shaped ends '5 forming shoulder supporting elements. The intermediate portion of the body 6 is provided with an upwardly projecting extension 8 which is recessed to form a hook 9.
The body portion 6 is also provided, intermediate of its ends, with a depending projection Into the forward side of which is attached a lever or clip jaw H which is pivotally supported relatively to the portion III by a spring [2.
As best seen in Figure '2, the spring l2 has a coiled intermediate portion disposed on the forward side of the portion Ill and which engages behind an intermediate portion of the lever or jaw One leg Id of the spring l2 extends from one end of the coiled portion 13 downwardly and through the body portion l0 and has a terminal 15 bent so as to engage against the backside oi said body portion ID for securing the spring I! thereto. The other end It of the spring I2 extends from the opposite end of the coil l3 diagonally across the jaw I l and has its terminal portion I! turned in the opposite direction for engaging across the outer side of thejaw or clip lever H, adjacent its lower end and for urging said end yieldably against the body portion In, which thereby constitutes the other, fixed jaw of a spring clip, designated generally l8.
One of the shoulder engaging portions I is provided with an elongated opening l9 which extends to adjacent the clip I8 and which affords an opening through which the fingers may be inserted for engagement with the backside of the body 6, so that pressure may be applied with the thumb against the upper end of the jaw H for opening the clip l8.
As clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the marginal edges of the body 6, including the hook 9 and depending extension l0, and the margin of the opening l9 are rolled rearwardly and outwardly to form rounded edges 20, in all portions of the hanger 5.
From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent that the clip jaw H may be opened, as previously described, for positioning a portion of a hat brim beneath the lower end thereof, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 1, after which, by releasing pressure on the upper end of the clip jaw II, the lower end thereof will be moved inwardly by the spring l2, for clamping said portion of the hat brim between the clip jaw H and body portion l0. Likewise, a pair of galoshes, overshoes or other garment may be similarly attached to the clip I8. As indicated in broken lines in Figure 1, a coat may be hung in a conventional manner on the shoulder engaging portions '1 and will substantially enclose the hat or other garments supported by the clip I8, so as to protect said last mentioned garment from being crushed. Also, if desired, a handbag, umbrella, or similar article may be hung over the neck or upper extension 8. The hook 9 is adapted to be detachably engaged with a supporting hook or rod, not shown.
3 Various modifications and changes are com ing opening located adjacent said jaw whereby templated and may obviously be resorted to, the fingers can be utilized for gripping the body Without d p n fr m the spirit or scope the portion of the hanger with the thumb disposed invention as hereinafter defined by the appended for opening the spring clip.
