H. O. TILLERY.
COTTON PLANTBR. No. 252,543.. Patented Ja'n.1'7,1882'.
UNTTEE STATES PATENT OEFIQE.
HERBERT O. TILLERY, OF FORT DEPOSIT, ALABAMA.
COTTON-PLANTE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,543, dated January 17, 1882.
' Application filed September 29, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT O. TILLERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Deposit, in the county of Lowndes and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton-Planters and Fertilizer-Distributers, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on line a" m of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4is a detail view.
This invention has relation to cotton-planters and fertilizer-distributers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed outin the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the frame, and B the supporting and driving wheel provided with the circle of laterally-projecting teeth a near its shaft 0, the latter having bearings in the arms ofthe frame A, as shown.
D designates the furrow-opener, and E the drag or coverer.
F designates the hopper, which is supported above the frame A by brackets G H andthe handles I. 'lhe hopper has an oscillating bottom composed of two sections, a and b, supported from the side of the hopper by hinged curved straps J J.
To a rod, K, connecting the rear ends ofthe arms of the frame A is pivoted an arm, L, which extends forward beneath the oscillating bottom of the hopper, and has its front end provided with a metal plate or shoe, 0, to prevent the laterally-projecting teeth afrom wearing the arm L at this point as they come in contact therewith. This arm L is slotted vertically at d, and is perforated laterally at c. Through the vertical slot 62 a perforated metal strap, M, suspended by a staple, f, from the under face of the oscillating bottom of the hopper, is passed, and a spring, N, secured to one side of the arm L, has an arm, g, which rests in the lateral perforation, e, and may be adjusted in the perforated metal strap M to regulate the stroke of the arm L, and thereby increase or diminish the motion of the oscillating bottom of the hopper. An agitator-shaft, 0, provided with teeth P, traverses the hopper, and has a crank-arm, Q, at one end. This crank-arm Q is connected with a pitman, R, on the end of the shaft 0.
S designates a slotted teed-gage secured by a guide-pin, h, and a set-screw, "i, to the inner face of one side of the-hopper. As the planter is drawn through the field the plow at the front of the frame opens the furrow, the wheel follows and presses the furrow, at the same time the teeth a operate the arm L and oscillate the bottom of the hopper, the cranks and pitman work the rock-shaft, and the teeth P agitate the contents of the hopper and cause a sufiicient discharge of the same, while the drag or scraper follows and covers the. seed or fertilizer.
In this class of machines hoppers having hinged bottoms made either in one piece or in two sections arranged side by side and operated through an arm or arms striking pins on the supporting-Wheel are not new, and are not broadly claimed hereinafter. Protection is asked only for the construction hereinafter specifically claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a cotton-planter and fertilizer-distributer, the combination, with the hopper having the oscillating bottom composed of the sections a and I), placed one above the other, and suspended from the hopper by the curved straps J J, of the perforated plate M, su pended from the bottom of the hopper, the lever L, slotted vertically at d, and perforated laterally at e and pivoted on the rod K, the spring N and the toothed wheel B, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT GARY TILLERY.
