lINTTEn STATES PATENT @rrtcn.
\VALTER I. TINKHAM, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MECHANISM FOR SUPPORTING AND LUBRICATING THE SPINDLES OF RING-SPINNING FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,239, dated February '7', 1882.
Application filed August 15,1881. (No model.)
To all zchom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER I. TINKHAM,
of Taunton, of the county of Bristol and State vofMassachnsetts, 1121V6"ll1"8l1i6(l a new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Supporting and Lubricating the Spindle ofa Ring- Spinning Frame; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, or" a spindle provided with'my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the step-supporter and its tubular standard. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the said standard, the plane of such section being through the lateral or band openings of the-standard. Fig. 5 is a side elevation, and Fig. 6 a front view, of the sleeve l, to be hereinafter described.
In the said drawings, A denotes a ring-frame spindle, B its whirl, 0 its step, and D its bolster. E is the stepsupporter, which is provided with a screw-shank, b, on which is arranged a nut, c, and two washers, cl 6, for securing the step-supporter in or to the spindle rail of a spinning-frame.
From the step-supporter a tubular standard, Ffprojects upward and has fitted into its upper part the bolster D, which may be held in place by a bayonet-connection or other suitable means, so as to be kept from rising or revolving Within the standard. The bolster is provided with an oil-receiving cup or annular trough, 6, arranged as shown, there being a hole,f, leading from it through the tubular bearing g, constituting part of thebolster, and arranged with the remainder of it in manner as represented. The tubular standard has a bore whose diameter is somewhat larger than that of the whirl, the standard having lateral openings or perforations h in it for the driving-band of the whirl to pass to and from the said whirl.
There is fixed to the spindle, concentrically of it andjust above the whirl, an oil-intercepting cup, G, which revolves with the spindle. The said cup is encompassed by another cup or oil-receiver, H, which, arranged within the bore of the standard, fits thereto sufficiently to be prevented from revolving with the cup G.
At the bottom of the cup H, and near the pe-' ard the encompassing sleeve on account of getting, by removal of the sleeve, ready access to the whirl, orto the step or bottom of the standard, for cleaning such as occasion may require, the sleeve serving also to prevent the escape of oil and to aid in conducting it to the bottom of the bore of the standard. On the oil-cup of the bolster being supplied with oil the bearing-surfaces of the bolsterand the part of the spindle within it will be lubricated. The oil escaping and flowing from the bolster down the spindle will be caught by the intercepting-cnp G, which, revolving with the spindle, will by centrifugal force cause the oil to rise and flow out of it (the said-cup) and into the surrounding cup or receiver H, throughthe hole or holes of whose bottom the oil will be discharged near to or against the periphery of the bore of the standard, or so as to drop down to the bottom of the bore withoutfalling upon the whirl or the driving-band thereof. From the said bottom of the bore the oil will flow into the step and lubricate it and the spindlefoot, the said step being suitably perforated or made so as to allow the oil to pass freely into it.
What I claim as my invention is as follows, viz:
1. The combination of the spindle A, its step G, bolster D, and whirl B, and step-supporter E with the laterally-perforated tubular standard I extending from the step-supporter E upward around and above the whirl, and supporting the bolster, as described, and with the oil intercepting and Qiseharging cups G and I all being constructed, arranged, and adapted H, adapted to the spindle and the standard, substantially in manner and to operate as set 10 substantiallyas specified, all beingoonstructed forth.
and to operate essentially as explained. Y 1
2. The combination of the sleeve l with the WALTER TINKHAM' step support-er, laterally perforated tubular Witnesses: standard, the step, bolster, spindle, whirl, and E. 1). GODFREY,
the two intercepting and dischargingoil-cups, O. E. \VALKER.
