Beitknown that I, WILLIAM KIGHTLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures .of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the class of lifting-jacks having the arm for supporting the weight adapted to play vertically on a standard and gripe the standard in such manner, when weight is placed upon its outer end, as to hold it in position wherever placed and the invention consists in novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section.

In the drawings, A represents avertical metallic standard, made square or rectangular in cross-section, and secured at its lower end to a suitable base, B.

O representsa metallic bar, provided with a square or rectangularhole, through which the standard A passes. The bar 0 plays up and down upon the standard, and when weight is placed upon its outer end it gripes the standard in such manneras to hold itin theposition wherever placed, the .front and rear sides of said standard being roughened, sothat the bar 0 will be enabled to more firmly gripe said standard.

D represents a bracket, having a hook,d, at its upper end, and a right-angled portion at its lower end having a square or rectangular hole,

' through which the standard also passes.

E represents a wooden lever or handle, having a metallic looped end, 0, which encircles the standard A and bracket D, and a smaller metallic loop, 6, that encircles only the bracket D, and adapted to engage a notch, d, in the bracket. The bar 0 is provided on its front end with a hook, c, and on the rearend with a round hole, 0 with which the hook d of bracket D is adapted to engage.

In using this invention the weight to he lifted is placed upon the outer end of bar 0. The lever E-is then lifted at its inner end until it rests against the under side of the bar. Then by pressing down upon the outer end of said lever the bar 0 is elevated on the standard. By repeating the above operation, or work ing the lever like a pump-handle and pulling back on the lever atthe same time, the bar 0 will continue to be raised, as the moment the lever stops lifting and its outer end is raised the bar 0 gripes the standard, as before explained, and remains where it was left by the lever. After the weight is raised, in order to let it down gradually, place the hook d of bracket D in the hole 0 of bar 0, and then bear down gradually on the leverwithits loop 6 in notch d, which will let the weight down easily, all as clearly shown in the drawings, the parts as shown in Fig. 1 being in position for raising the Weight, and as shown in Fig. 2 for lowering the weight.

The standard is provided at its upper end with a removable looped handle, F, secured thereto by a screw, f, for the purpose of carrying thejack.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with the standard A and bar 0, with itsopening, of the bracket D, adapted to he detachably connected to bar 0, and the lever E, having metallic looped ends e e, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown and described.

2. The herein-described lifting-jack, consisting of the base B, standardA,having front and rear roughened sides, the bar 0, having openings through its rear end, the notched bracket D, having hook (I, and the lever or handle E, having metallic looped ends 0 e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
