My present invention relates to valves, and more particularly to valves of the flap dump type and to means for facilitating the opening thereof. Dump valves, particularl those of large size, i. e. twelve or more inches in diameter, such as are n ed n paper heaters, are for the most part quite difficult to open when the beater. puloer or stock chest is full of sto k. This difficulty is due partly to the weight of stock over the valve, partly to the seal of the valve on its seat, and
partly to the vacuum in the pine line used for running off the stock in paper mills.
Where a dump valve of the sizes mentioned is held by only a very slight vacuum, it is dithcult to crack the valve open, een without any head of stock whatever over the valve, and such diiiiculty is increased as the depth of the stock, and hence the weight of such stock on the valve, is increased. As a result operating shafts some t mes become broken and in general the extreme difficulty of opening these v lves when the pine lines from the heaters to the chest were emptying and when the heaters were full causes man delays in the mill.
In order to overcome these and other obiections to the conventional dump valve, I have devised my resent invention.
According to it, I provide near the in ide edge of the valve a cam linkage for first tlting one edge of the valve to open th same. The thrust action on this linkage is greatly multipl ed, due to its po ition as close as possible to the source of ap lied power. This increase of t rust t e resultin tilt on one ed e of the val e, breaks th seal of the valve to its seat, and any vacuum, with the min mum of appli=d force. It also allows a certain amount of water and stock to enter the discharge passage before the center linkage comes to bear on the valve takes over th thrust, and open the valve in the conventional manner.
The principal object of my invention is an improved d mp valve and m chanism for facilitating the o ening operation thereof.
Another object is an impro ed vale o erating m ans for o ening a dump valve by combined tilting and lifting operation.
Other objects and novel features of the construction and operation of parts comprising my improved valve will appear as the description of my invention progresses.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional side elevational view showing my novel valve and operating mechanism in closed position, and
on its seat, and prior to the full opening of the valve.
Referring to the drawing, Hi design tes the valve body, set into an op ning formed in the bottom ii (shown in dash lines) of beater or other receptacle. The bodin is threaded on its lower end at E2 to receive a flange l3 by means of which it may be attached to a discharge pipe Or line. A p ssage I4 extends upwardly through the valve body If] and at its upper end the material of the body is provided with an inset valve seat l5.
At one side of the body it and formed integral therewith is a chamber it which houses one end of an operating lever ll.
Associated with the valve seat i5, and seat ng thereon, as shown in Fig. 1, is the vale member 58. This valve member 88 has formed integral therewith on its under face one or more dependin strengthening ribs IQ, and also is provided with integral depending lugs 28 and 2|. Lug 20 is in the center of the valve member. and lug 2i lies adjacent to the edge of the valve member l8 nearest the chamber l6. At the lower end of lug 2!} is a transverse shaft 22 and at the lower end of lug ii is a shaft 23.
Rotatably mounted in suitable bearings in the material forming the chamber i6 is a shaft 24. One end of shaft 28 extends outwardly of said chamber, and has mounted on such extended end an operating lever 25. That portion of the shaft 24. within the chamber it, is made square, as indicated at 25, and on this squared portion is mounted the outer end of operating lever i1.
Between its ends lever i'i is provided with an extension 2! rotatable on the shaft 23, and at its inner end said ever has an extension 28 provided with an elongated slot 29 engaging with and sidable on the shaft 22 mounted on the depending lug 26 at the center of the under face of the valve l8.
Assuming that the valve is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to open the same, the operation is as follows:
The operator pul s on the lever 25 to rotate shaft 2 in a clockwise direction. This moves the inner end 28 of the operating lever I! upwardly over the shaft 22 until the shaft 22 rests in the lower end of the slot 29,. as shown in Fig. 2. Simultaneously, the extension 2'! of lever I! which lies nearest the pivot shaft 2% and thus acts with greatly multiplied force, tilts the edge 1.? of the valve l8 off the seat 55, and thus breaks the seal of the valve on its seat, and allows the passage of a small amount of water and paper to flow through the valve passage I l and into the discharge passage or line.
Once the valve [8 is tilted off seat l5, continued movement of the lever 25 through the upward force exerted on the s aft at the center of the valve by the extension 28 of lever ll readily lifts and tilts the valve to its fully open position.
In actual practice, rotation of the shaft 2' through an angle of 45 will cause a rotative movement of the valve ill on the shaft 23 through 60.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for cracking and opening a dump valve in two ste s wherein greater leverage will be available for the cracking step, comprising, a lever working arm extend ng transverse y of the valve, a fulcrum for the lever ad acent to the margin of the valve, a first lug mounted on the valve adiacent to the lever working arm and adjacent to the margin of the valve nearest the lever fulcrum, the lever working arm being pivotally connected to the first lug, a second lug mounted substantially toward the center of the valve, a cross-pin mounted on said second lug, wals defining a slot in said lever worla'ing arm, said cross-pin slidable in said slot to permit free operation of the lever working arm through limited are but to engage the lug if the lever working arm is further operated, whereby initial operation of the lever brings force to bear upon the first lug with a short lever working arm to tilt the valve, and further operation of the lever brings force to bear upon the second lug with a long lever working arm to open the valve.
2. Apparatus for cracking and opening a dump valve in two steps wherein greater leverage will be available for the cracking step, comprising, a lever arm extending transversely of the valve, a fulcrum for the lever arm adjacent to the margin of the valve, means pivotally connecting the lever arm to the valve at a point near the margin of the valve adjacent to the said fulcrum whereby operation of the lever will unseat the margin of the valve nearest the fulcrum, and means connecting the lever arm to the valve at a second point nearer the center thereof including a lug secured to said valve, a pin on said lug, a slot in said lever arm and said pin riding in said slot whereby to permit a limited axial component of motion of the lever, but to engage the lever arm and open the valve after sufficient motion of the lever arm has taken place to crack the valve.
