AM. PMOT0LITMO. CU. MY. (SBORNES PRUCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. R. FAUGHT, OE ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
HORSE-POWER MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,497, dated September 20, 1859.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, L. R. FAUGHT, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Horse-Power; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side sectional view of my invention taken in the line a0, az, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of same, taken in the line y, y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in a novel arrangement of gearing substantially as hereinafter described, whereby it is designed to transmit the power of the animals to the machinery to be driven with as little loss by friction as possible.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a stationary geared rim which is supported by a suitable framing B, at a proper height. C, C, are two pinions which are placed loosely on the ends of a bar D, and gear into the rim A, at opposite points of its center. E, is a rotating geared rim which is directly over the stationary rim A. The rim E, gears into the pinions C, C, and also gears into pinions F, F, which are equal in size to the pinions C, and are placed on the outer ends of shafts Gr, Gr, the inner ends of which have their bearings a, a, attached to the center of the bar D. The shafts G, G, are at right angles to the bar D, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The rim E, has pendents b, to the lower ends of which friction rollers c, are attached, said rollers bearing against the under surface of the rim A, and retaining rim E, in proper position. The rim has two curved cross arms cl, d, connected with its upper edge and at their point of intersection there is a hole which receives a bearing e, for the upper part of a vertical shaft F', which passes through the center of bar D. The rim E,
with its arms d, cl, and pendente b, may be of cast metal and all cast in `one piece.
On the inner end of each shaft G, a bevel wheel H, is placed. These wheels both gear into a bevel pinion I, on the upper part of the shaft F. The lower end of the shaft F is stepped at the center of the framing B, as shown at f, Fig. l, and on the lower part of shaft F a toothed wheel J, is placed, said wheel gearing into a bevel pinion g, on a horizontal shaft K, the bearings h, of which are attached to the framing B.
The stationary rim A, with its framing B, may be of cast metal and cast in one piece.
To the rim E, wooden bars L, are attached. These bars may be secured to the bases of the arms d, d, and they project outward sufliciently from the rim E, to admit of the animals being attached thereto.
From the above description it will be seen that when the animals are attached to the bars L, and the rim E, rotated, power will be applied to the pinions F, F, without throwing any strain on a journal. The transmission of power from the rim E, to the shaft F, being such that an equal or counterbalanced strain is transmitted with the power through the machine. The reverse movement of the two wheels H, H, reduces the friction in the running of shaft F while the traveling bar D, supports the inner bearings of the shaft G, and its pinions C, serve as supports forthe rim E.
I do not claim a stationary geared rim A, nor any of the parts herein described when separately considered, but,
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The arrangement and combination of the stationary geared rim A, movable rim E, supporting bar D, fitted in the pinions C, C, the shafts G, G, provided with pinions F, F, and wheels H, H, and the shaft F, substantially as and for t-he purpose set forth.
