Description
June 12, 1951 a. A. LIMYR CALCULATING FRAME Filed Aug. 2, 1948 Wren 70F 67%169/94 Z/M/e' M "/4 Patented June 12, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application August 2, 1948, Serial No. 42,041 In Norway December 27, 1940 1 Claim. 1
The invention relates to counting frames with prismatic beads, which are slidable on square rotatable shafts, the four side faces of which beads are differently marked with numbers in the numeral series, numbers in the multiplication table, points and pictures respectively.
The invention provides for a device for simultaneously changing the position of all the beads mounted on the different shafts, thereby making two opposite side faces of the beads visible to the pupils, one of which faces for the time present are considered suitable for the instruction, the beads being maintained in the desired position of display.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the counting frame,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 2-2 in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on line 3-3 in Fig. 1
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through a bead, also showing the four side-faces of same with their different markings.
The frame has horizontal square shafts I which are rotatably mounted in the side posts 2, 3 on same. The beads 4 have square holes 5, corresponding to the square section of the shafts l and are received on same. The ends 6 of the shafts project into a box-like structure I. Weights 8 of heavy material, for example lead, are secured to the ends 6 of the shafts, either directly or to interposed wooden blocks 9, which may be provided with a square hole and received on the ends 6.
The size of the weights 8 is adjusted in such a way relatively to the size of the box-like structure, that they will always contact one of two opposite walls thereof, thereby two opposite side faces of the beads 4 are visible. On tilting the frame the weights 8 will rotate and hit the opposite wall and the two remaining opposite faces of the beads 4 will thus be displayed.
I claim:
A calculating frame comprising side posts, individually rotatable shafts each with a noncircular portion extending between the side posts, beads slidable but non-rotatable on said shafts and means for rotatably adjusting said shafts to the alternative positions including an eccentrically fixed Weight on one end of each shaft, one of the side posts being in the form of a box-like structure into which the shafts extend and in which said weights are located and are oscillatable within the limits of the box-like structure.
